Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an increasingly important health problem world-wide. Whereas most other leading diseases have shown a decline in the past decades, COPD morbidity and mortality is on a steady increase. Exacerbations are usually defined as an increase in cough, a change in the colour or quantity of sputum, and a worsening dyspnea. The role of bacterial infections and the efficacy of antimicrobial therapy in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECD) is still controversial. Exacerbations of chronic bronchitis are a common occurrence in clinical practice and are a leading cause of antibiotic prescription among respiratory infections. It is still uncertain whether each new exacerbation may deteriorate the natural history of chronic bronchitis. Undoubtedly, every episode includes a temporary worsening in lung function and may therefore pose the threat of respiratory failure or death in more severely obstructed patients.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) threatens TB control programs worldwide. Outbreaks of MDRTB in the United States grabbed the attention of the medical community and the general public, and subsequent surveys have found 'hot spots' of MDRTB in low- and middle-income countries on four continents. Unlike other textbooks that contain only a single chapter on MDRTB, this book is devoted to the subject. Contributions from experts from multi disciplines provide detailed descriptions, causation, molecular biology, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and public health, aspect of this disease. This book provides an authoritative overview of MDRTB and will be a useful reference book for clinicians, scientists and other health personnel involved in the care of TB and MDRTB patients in industrialized and developing countries.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Dr. Olcbee Lee SchoolofEducation, UniversityofMiami Coral Gables, Florida 33124 I remember my excitement and appreciation several years ago when I first read World View Theory and Science Education Research by Bill Cobern (1991). It was a comprehensive, theoretical discussion ofworldview theory in science education. I am delighted to see that Cobern has taken the next step to provide empirical accountsofworldview in Everyday Thoughts about Nature. . The primary goal of the book is to understand how typical- ninth grade students and their science teachers think about Nature or the natural world, and how their thoughts are related to science. In pursuing this goal, the book raises a basicquestion about the purpose ofscienceeducationfor the public: Should science education seek to educate 'scientific thinkers' in the pattern of the science teachers Or, should science education seek to foster sound science learning within the matrices ofvari ous cultural perspectives (p. 3) The answer to this question becomes clear, thanks to Cobern's excellent research and persuasivearguments. First, this research takes a humanistic approach in understanding what students and teachers think about Nature 'through the language and ideas voluntarily expressed' (p. I). The research used multi directional prompts and encouraged students and teachers to speak freely and at length in any directions they wished. This humanistic approach is stated clearly: '[T]he research seeks to illuminate some of the various ways in which students think aboutNature withoutjudging eventhe most unorthodox perspectives' (p. 14).…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Agriculture is a crucial component of the economies of many of the countries in transition from a centrally-planned to a market economy and the sector is by no means immune to the environmental and socioeconomic problems confronting the countries as a whole. The concept of sustainable development provides a convenient framework for the formulation of government environmental policy for such countries, especially those of them that aspire to join the EU and would thus be expected to meet EU environmental standards. For agriculture, this inevitably involves appropriate strategies for balancing crop and animal production while protecting the quality of the national soil and water resources. There is thus an urgent need to compile, exchange and evaluate current information on the quality of soils in these countries, and to assess the potential impact of new management practices on the soil and on the wider environment. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Financial systems around the world are undergoing a process of modernization due to many different forces. Advances in information technology, product and market innovations, and recent regional financial crises have contributed to this movement. As a result, evolution in the financial sector is leading to larger, more complex financial organizations that render inadequate the supervisory and regulatory structures currently in place. While some changes in regulatory policies have already occurred, the adaptation of supervisory oversight and regulation in the face of these new developments is expected to continue for many years to come. This book collects papers originally presented in September 1998 at the Financial Modernization and Regulation Conference co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and San Francisco. Revised before publication, the papers seek to identify the reasons for changes in the financial services sector, and the implications these changes pose for financial supervision and regulation. Taken together, the papers offer valuable insights on 1) the forces behind financial modernization; 2) the implications financial modernization poses for corporate structure, market discipline, and financial regulation; 3) how to price deposit insurance accurately to reflect banks' risk-taking; and 4) balancing private versus public interests and managing potentially conflicting public policy goals. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The discovery of the human T cell leukemia virus type I in the late 1970s heralded a new era in retrovirology. For the first time, it was demonstrated that a retrovirus could play a role in the development of a human disease, in this case adult T cell leukemia (ATL). Several years later, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic began, and it was dem- strated that a retrovirus, originally designated the human T cell lymp- tropic virus type 3, was the causal agent of this syndrome. This virus, later named the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), has since been extensively studied in terms of its pathogenesis as well as its ability to elicit immune responses. In that time, a tremendous amount of information has been obtained about the virus. Although recent drug regimens have been useful in significantly lowering viral loads and perhaps maintaining an asymptomatic state among individuals infected with HIV-1, an established 'cure' for AIDS eludes us. In addition, the effective drug therapies are very expensive, and are not available to infected people in the third world, where greater than 90% of new infections occur. Furthermore, the development of viral resistance against the drug therapies is an additional concern. Despite extensive study, no effective vaccine has been developed. One of the problems in developing an effective vaccine against HIV-1 is the ability of the virus, particularly in the immunogenic envelop glycoprotein, to undergo amino acid hypervariability. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This timely publication fills a large gap in the ophthalmic literature which has so far lacked a monograph on the clinically very important subject of macular edema. The book presents the most up-to-date scientific concepts concerning the etiology and pathogenesis of blood retinal barrier breakdown such as tight junction associated protein dysfunction, and changes in fluid transport properties of the retinal pigment epithelium. The bulk of the book is clinically oriented and addresses novel imaging and diagnostic techniques for the detection of macular edema as well as the clinical context of a panoply of ocular diseases which induce macular edema, such as diabetes, other vasculopathies, uveitis, and many others. New light is shed on the association between highly active antiretroviral therapy and the induction of macular edema in HIV-positive patients. Novel drug treatment regimens with steroids and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors as well as new ways of applying laser and surgical therapies are also discussed in detail, and practical treatment guidelines are given. This book will be helpful for vitreoretinal specialists as well as for the practising ophthalmologist confronted with patients suffering from macular edema.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - of UB's medical school, that UB developed its School of Arts and Sciences, and thus, assumed its place among the other institutions of higher education. Had Fillmore lived throughout UB's first seventy years, he would probably have been elated by the success of his university, and he should have been satisfied and pleased that UB remained intrinsically bonded to its community while at the same time engrafting the values and standards important to higher education's mission in the region. UB and its medical school have undergone many challenging transitions since 1846. Included among them were: (1) the completion of an academic campus in the far northeast comer of the City of Buffalo while leaving its medical, dental and law schools firmly situated in the core of downtown Buffalo; (2) the eventual relocation, after the second world war, of the law school to the newer campus in Amherst, and the medical and dental school to the original academic campus: and (3) the merger with the State University of New York System in 1962. Despite these significant transitions, any one of which could have changed the intrinsic integrity of UB and disrupted the bonding between community and university, that did not happen. To this day, the ties between community and academe persist. Fillmore and White should celebrate their success and important contribution to Buffalo and Western New York.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - For more than 25 years the Standard Model of particle physics has withstood the confrontation with experimental results of increasing precision, but this does not imply that the Standard Model can answer all questions about the ultimate constituents of nature. This book presents a critical examination of the latest experimental results and confronts them with the predictions of the Standard Model. Besides discussions of accelerator results from LEP, HERA and the TEVATRON, attention is paid to the unresolved problems of neutrino oscillations, CP violation, dark matter and cosmology. New theoretical ideas are also analyzed in order to explore possible extensions of the standard model. Realistic plans for future accelerators are presented and their physics potential is discussed, paving the way for the next generation of particle physics experiments. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - From the perspective of the investigator, Graves' disease is a fascinating disorder with unique features and opportunities for study. The discovery in 1956 that Graves' disease was caused by a humoral factor, later shown to be an antibody to the TSH receptor, was a triumph for modern investigative medicine. Rapid progress is now being made in (i) understanding the molecular interaction between autoantibodies and the TSH receptor, (ii) identifying the genes that contribute to the predisposition to disease, (iii) developing an animal model of Graves' disease, and (iv) identifying the long-sought orbital antigen in ophthalmopathy. From the clinical standpoint, although Graves' disease is eminently treatable, there is no definitive cure. None of the therapeutic options are ideal. It is hoped that rapid progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease will lead to the ultimate goal of some form of immunotherapy that will make antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and thyroidectomy obsolete. The chapters in Graves' Disease: Pathogenesis and Treatment represent the viewpoints of many prominent clinicians and investigators working in the field. The editors are grateful for their contributions which cover an unusually comprehensive compendium of subjects relating to the disease.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Interfaces between media, whether air-water or sediment-water interfaces or organisms themselves, pose considerable problems to marine organisms attempting to live at these boundaries. In the present volume, a number of authors address various aspects of these two topics. Locations under scrutiny range from intertidal areas to the deep sea, while both macro-and meiofaunal organisms are investigated. Distribution patterns and effects of variable temperatures, pressures, and salinities are analysed. Aspects of fouling induction and prevention are also addressed. This book is intended as a progress report from the 33rd European Marine Biology Symposium held in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in September 1998.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This book presents the most recent research advances in the theory, design, control and application of robotic systems, which are intended for a variety of purposes such as manipulation, manufacturing, automation, surgery, locomotion and biomechanics. The issues addressed are fundamentally kinematic in nature, including synthesis, calibration, redundancy, force control, dexterity, inverse and forward kinematics, kinematic singularities, as well as over-constrained systems. Methods used include line geometry, quaternion algebra, screw algebra, and linear algebra. These methods are applied to both parallel and serial multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The results should interest researchers, teachers and students, in fields of engineering and mathematics related to robot theory, design, control and application. All articles in the book were reported at the seventh international symposium on Advances in Robot Kinematics that was organised in June 2000 in the beautiful ancient Mediterranean town of Piran in Slovenia. The preceding symposia of the series took place in Ljubljana (1988), Linz (1990), Ferrara (1992), Ljubljana (1994), and Piran (1996), and Salzburg (1998).…

It has its origin in mathematical problems of quantum mechanics and is intimately related to the theory of partial differential equations. Some recently solved problems, such as asymptotic completeness for the Schrödinger operator with long-range and multiparticle potentials, as well as open problems, are discussed. We construct also potentials for which asymptotic completeness is violated. This corresponds to a new class of asymptotic solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Special attention is paid to the properties of the scattering matrix, which is the main observable of the theory. The book is addressed to readers interested in a deeper study of the subject. 192 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book systematically develops the nonlinear potential theory connected with the weighted Sobolev space Wm,pw( ), where the weight usually belongs to Muckenhoupt's class of Ap weights. These spaces occur as solutions spaces for degenerate elliptic partial differential equations. The Sobolev space theory covers results concerning approximation, extension, and interpolation, Sobolev and Poincare inequalities, Maz'ya type embedding theorems, and isoperimetric inequalities. In the chapter devoted to potential theory, several weighted capacities are investigated. Moreover, 'Kellogg lemmas' are established for various concepts of thinness. Applications of potential theory to weighted Sobolev spaces include quasi continuity of Sobolev functions, Poincare inequalities, and spectral synthesis theorems. 196 pp. Englisch.…

Historians may perhaps come to refer to it as the century of information, just as its predecessor is associated with the process of industrialisation. Successive technological developments such as the telephone, radio, television, computers and the Internet have had profound effects on the way we live. We can see pic tures of the surface of Mars or the early shape of the Universe. The contents of a whole shelf-load of library books can be compressed onto an almost weight less piece of plastic. Billions of people can watch the same football match, or can keep in instant touch with friends around the world without leaving home. In short, massive amounts of information can now be stored, transmitted and processed, with surprising speed, accuracy and economy. Of course, these developments do not happen without some theoretical ba sis, and as is so often the case, much of this is provided by mathematics. Many of the first mathematical advances in this area were made in the mid-twentieth century by engineers, often relying on intuition and experience rather than a deep theoretical knowledge to lead them to their discoveries. Soon the math ematicians, delighted to see new applications for their subject, joined in and developed the engineers' practical examples into wide-ranging theories, com plete with definitions, theorems and proofs. 228 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -While conducting research on intellectual and neuropsychological perfonnance of various patient populations across time, we became aware of the lack of information concerning practice effects associated with many widely used assessment instruments. Although test-retest data were available for almost all of these instruments, it typically came in the form of correlation coefficients and mean changes in performance between assessments was often absent. In a 1995 article (McCaffrey & Westervelt, 1995), we discussed a number of issues relevant to serial neuropsychological and intellectual assessment and concluded that clinical neuropsychological practitioners had few guidelines to assist them in interpreting change in a patient's performance across assessments. This volume represents our efforts at reviewing the literature between 1970 and 1998 and extracting the reported information on practice effects. The tables include the assessment instrument used, information on the subject/patient groups, the sample size fu}, gender, age, intervention, interval between the assessments, scores at both assessment points, and the citation. The tables reflect the existing published literature within intellectual assessment and, therefore, some instruments (e.g., Wechsler tests) comprise a majority of the tables whereas others (e.g., Raven's Progressive Matrices, Stanford-Binet) do not. The test index is arranged by the name of the test as reported in the specific article. We caution readers to refer to the original articles if additional or more specific information is needed. 292 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This interdisciplinary book provides a compendium of projects, plus numerous example programs for readers to study and explore. Designed for advanced undergraduates or graduates of science, mathematics and engineering who will deal with scientific computation in their future studies and research, it also contains new and useful reference materials for researchers. The problem sets range from the tutorial to exploratory and, at times, to 'the impossible'. The projects were collected from research results and computational dilemmas during the author's tenure as Chief Scientist at NeXT Computer, and from his lectures at Reed College. The content assumes familiarity with such college topics as calculus, differential equations, and at least elementary programming. Each project focuses on computation, theory, graphics, or a combination of these, an d is designed with an estimated level of difficulty. The support code for each takes the form of either C or Mathematica, and is included in the appendix and on the bundled diskette. The algorithms are clearly laid out within the projects, such that the book may be used with other symbolic numerical and algebraic manipulation products.System requirements:Any NEXTSTEP computer running Mathematica 2.0 or higher is recommended to fully utilize disk contents. The diskette is also compatible with DOS, Windows, Macintosh and most UNIX computer systems (especially C language and Mathematica). 500 pp. Englisch.…

They were selected from 44 abstracts submitted in response to the call for papers. In addition, there were invited lectures by Andrei Broder (AltaVista), Fernando Pereira (AT&T Research Labs), and Ian H. Witten (U- versity of Waikato). The symposium was preceded by a two-day summer school set up to - tract and train young researchers. The lecturers at the school were Greg Butler, ClementLam,andGusGrahne:BLAST!Howdoyousearchsequencedatabases , DavidBryant:Phylogeny,Ra aeleGiancarlo: Algorithmicaspectsof speech rec- nition, Nadia El-Mabrouk: Genome rearrangement,LaxmiParida: Flexib- pattern discovery, and Ian H. Witten: Adaptive text mining: inferring structure from sequences. Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM) addresses issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expr- sions graphs, point sets, and arrays. The goal is to derive non-trivial combi- torial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems. Over recent years a steady ow of high-quality research on this subject has changed a sparse set of isolated results into a fully- edged area of algorithmics. 440 pp. Englisch.…

LOPSTRistheannualworkshopandforumforresearchersinthelogic-based program development stream of computational logic. The main focus used to be on synthesis and transformation of logic programs, but the workshop is open to contributions on logic-based program development in any paradigm. Previous workshops were held in Manchester, UK (1991, 1992), Louvain-la-Neuve, B- gium (1993), Pisa, Italy (1994), Arnhem, The Netherlands (1995), Stockholm, Sweden (1996), Leuven, Belgium (1997), and Manchester, UK (1998). LOPSTR is a real workshop in the sense that it is a friendly and lively forum for presenting recent and current research as well as discussing future trends. Formal proceedings of the workshop are produced only after the workshop and contain only those papers selected by the program committee after a second refereeing process. The program committee of LOPSTR'99 accepted 20 extended abstracts for presentation at the workshop; then selected 14 papers for inclusion in the po- workshop proceedings. Selected papers cover all the main streams of LOPSTR's topics: synthesis, specialization, transformation, analysis, and veri cation. Ve- cation, transformation, and specialization methods are applied to functional, constraint, logic, and imperative programming. 328 pp. Englisch. …

This conference succeeded other meetings on the same topic held in Lautenbach (1992), Marseille (1993), Abingdon (1994), St Goar (1995), Terrasini (1996), Pont-` a-Mousson (1997), Oisterwijk (1998) and Saratoga Springs (1999). Tableaux and related methods, such as Gentzen calculi, are convenient and e ective for automating deduction not just in classical logic but also in various non-standard logics. Examples taken from this meeting alone include temporal, description, non-monotonic, tense, modal, epistemic, fuzzy and intuitionistic - gics. Areas of application include veri cation of software and computer systems, deductive databases, knowledge representation and system diagnosis. The c- ference brought together researchers interested in all aspects theoretical fo- dations, implementation techniques, systems development, experimental com- rison and applications of the automation of reasoning by means of tableaux or related methods. 456 pp. Englisch.…
