Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -From April 1999 Notices of the AMS, announcing that the author was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition for his many mathematics books: 'Lang's Algebra changed the way graduate algebra is taught, retaining classical topics but introducing language and ways of thinking from…category theory and homological algebra. It has affected all subsequent graduate-level algebra books.'From MathSciNet's review of the first edition:'The author has an impressive knack for presenting the important and interesting ideas of algebra in just the 'right' way, and he never gets bogged down in the dry formalism which pervades some parts of algebra.'This book is intended as a basic text for a one-year course in Algebra at the graduate level, or as a useful reference for mathematicians and professionals who use higher-level algebra. This book successfully addresses all of the basic concepts of algebra. For the new edition, the author has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text. 940 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This book is intended to provide a mathematical bridge from a general physics course to intermediate-level courses in classical mechanics, electricity and mag netism, and quantum mechanics. The book begins with a short review of a few topics that should be familiar to the student from a general ph…ysics course. These examples will be used throughout the rest of the book to provide physical con texts for introducing the mathematical applications. The next two chapters are devoted to making the student familiar with vector operations in algebra and cal culus. Students will have already become acquainted with vectors in the general physics course. The notion of magnetic flux provides a physical connection with the integral theorems of vector calculus. A very short chapter on complex num bers is sufficient to supply the needed background for the minor role played by complex numbers in the remainder of the text. Mathematical applications in in termediate and advanced undergraduate courses in physics are often in the form of ordinary or partial differential equations. Ordinary differential equations are introduced in Chapter 5. The ubiquitous simple harmonic oscillator is used to il lustrate the series method of solving an ordinary, linear, second-order differential equation. The one-dimensional, time-dependent SchrOdinger equation provides an illus tration for solving a partial differential equation by the method of separation of variables in Chapter 6.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Automatic Differentiation (AD) is a maturing computational technology and has become a mainstream tool used by practicing scientists and computer engineers. The rapid advance of hardware computing power and AD tools has enabled practitioners to quickly generate derivative-enhanced versions of thei…r code for a broad range of applications in applied research and development.Automatic Differentiation of Algorithms provides a comprehensive and authoritative survey of all recent developments, new techniques, and tools for AD use. The book covers all aspects of the subject: mathematics, scientific programming (i.e., use of adjoints in optimization) and implementation (i.e., memory management problems). A strong theme of the book is the relationships between AD tools and other software tools, such as compilers and parallelizers. A rich variety of significant applications are presented as well, including optimum-shape design problems, for which AD offers more efficient tools and techniques.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The topics covered in this book include: Theory of Scattering and Scintillation, Distribution of Scattering Material, Intra-day Variability, Pulsars and their Magnetospheric Structure, Polarization of AGN, Interplanetary Scintillation, and Future Highly-Sensitive Radio Telescopes. The introductory… papers emphasize the essential properties of diffractive and refractive scattering, how they differ in temporal and frequency structure, and what they reveal about irregularities in the ISM. Pulsars can be examined in a number of different ways as a function of frequency: time variability (both short and long term), DM changes, pulse broadening, angular extent, and Faraday rotation. Intra-day variable sources (IDVs) are another major topic of the book. Although many variable sources clearly exhibit intrinsic changes, IDVs are generally believed to result from scintillation effects. They require source sizes on the ten micro-arcsec scale, the most extreme cases having profound implications for source lifetimes and emission mechanisms. Finally, a dozen contributions describe future large radio telescope projects, especially the Chinese FAST effort to build a 500 m spherical reflector of innovative design.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Exploration of Cortical Function summarizes recent research efforts aiming at the revelation of cortical population coding and signal processing strategies. Topics include optical detection techniques of population activity in the sub-millimeter range, advanced methods for the statistical a…nalysis of these data, and biologically inspired neuronal modeling techniques for population activities in the frameworks of optimal coding, statistical learning theory, and mean-field recurrent networks. Exploration of Cortical Function is unique in that it covers one complete branch of population-based brain research ranging from techniques for data acquisition over data analysis up to modeling techniques for the quantification of functional principles. The volume covers an area which is of great current interest to researchers working on cerebral cortex. The combination of models and image analysis techniques to examine the activity of large cohorts of neurons is especially intriguing and prone to considerable error and debate.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators shows how to design and fabricate optical microsystems using innovative technologies and and original architectures. A barcode scanner, laser projection mirror and a microspectrometer are explained in detail, starting fro…m the system conception, discussing simulations, choice of cleanroom technologies, design, fabrication, device test, packaging all the way to the system assembly. An advanced microscanning device capable of one- and two-dimensional scanning can be integrated in a compact barcode scanning system composed of a laser diode and adapted optics. The original design of the microscanner combines efficiently the miniaturized thermal mechanical actuator and the reflecting mirror, providing a one-dimensional scanning or an unique combination of two movements, depending on the geometry. The simplicity of the device makes it a competitive component. The authors rethink the design of a miniaturized optical device and find a compact solution for a microspectrometer, based on a tunable filter and a single pixel detector. A porous silicon technology combines efficiently the optical filter function with a thermal mechanical actuator on chip. The methodology for design and process calibration are discussed in detail. The device is the core component of an infrared gas spectrometer.

Interestinspeechapplicationsdatesbackanumberofdecades. However, it is only in the last few years that automatic speech recognition has left the con nes of the basic research lab and become a viable commercial application. Speech recognition technology has now matured to the point where speech can be used to interact with automated phone systems, control computer programs, andevencreatememosanddocuments.Movingbeyondcomputercontroland dictation, speech recognition has the potential to dramatically change the way we create, capture, andstoreknowledge.Advancesinspeechrecognitiontechnology combined with ever decreasing storage costs and processors that double in power every eighteen months have set the stage for a whole new era of applications that treat speech in the same way that we currently treat text. The goal of this workshop was to explore the technical issues involved in a- lying information retrieval and text analysis technologies in the new application domainsenabledbyautomaticspeechrecognition.Thesepossibilitiesbringwith themanumberofissues,questions,andproblems.Speech-baseduserinterfaces create di erent expectations for the end user, which in turn places di erent - mands on the back-end systems that must interact with the user and interpret theuser'scommands.Speechrecognitionwillneverbeperfect,soanalyses- plied to the resulting transcripts must be robust in the face of recognition errors. The ability to capture speech and apply speech recognition on smaller, more - werful, pervasive devices suggests that text analysis and mining technologies can be applied in new domains never before considered. 128 pp. Englisch.

In some cases, major software systems are assembled with virtually no custom code in the system. The use of COTS software product…s as components o ers the promise of rapid delivery to end users, shared development costs with other customers, and an opportunity for expanding mission or business capabilities and performance as improvements are made in the commercial marketplace. Few organizations today can a ord the resources and time to replicate market-tested capabilities. Yet, the promise of COTS products is too often not realized in practice. There have been more failures than successes in using COTS software products. The research and software practitioner communities have been working with COTS-based software systems for a number of years. There is now su cient documented experience in the community to collect, analyze, and disseminate success stories, common failings, lessons-learned, and research advances. The mounting experience shows that the e ective use of COTS software products in major software systems demands new skills, knowledge, and abilities, changed roles and responsibilities, and di erent techniques and processes. The International Conference on COTS-Based Software Systems (ICCBSS) focuses on the challenges of building and maintaining systems that incorporate COTSsoftwareproducts.Theconferencesponsors,theNationalResearchCo- cil Canada, the Software Engineering Institute, and the University of Southern California Center for Software Engineering, aim to bring together managers, - velopers, maintainers, and researchers to share their expertise and experience. 276 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Software systems play an increasingly important role in modern societies. Smart cards for personal identi cation, e-banking, software-controlled me- cal tools, airbags in cars, and autopilots for aircraft control are only some examp…les that illustrate how everyday life depends on the good behavior of software. Consequently, techniques and methods for the development of hi- quality, dependable software systems are a central research topic in computer science. A fundamental approach to this area is to use formal speci cation and veri cation. Speci cation languages allow one to describe the crucial p- perties of software systems in an abstract, mathematically precise, and implementation-independent way. By formal veri cation, one can then prove that an implementation really has the desired, speci ed properties. Although this formal methods approach has been a research topic for more than 30 years, its practical success is still restricted to domains in which devel- ment costs are of minor importance. Two aspects are crucial to widen the application area of formal methods: - Formal speci cation techniques have to be smoothly integrated into the software and program development process. - The techniques have to be applicable to reusable software components. This way, the quality gain can be exploited for more than one system, thereby justifying the higher development costs. Starting from these considerations, Peter Muller has developed new te- niques for the formal speci cation and veri cation of object-oriented so- ware. The speci cation techniques are declarative and implementati- independent. They can be used for object-oriented design and programming. 312 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -We are both fans of watching animated stories. Every evening, before or after d- ner, we always sit in front of the television and watch the animation program, which is originally produced and shown for children. We find ourselves b…ecoming younger while immerged in the interesting plot of the animation: how the princess is first killed and then rescued, how the little rat defeats the big cat, etc. But what we have found in those animation programs are not only interesting plots, but also a big chance for the application of computer science and artificial intelligence techniques. As is well known, the cost of producing animated movies is very high, even with the use of computer graphics techniques. Turning a story in text form into an animated movie is a long and complicated procedure. We came to the c- clusion that many parts of this process could be automated by using artificial - telligence techniques. It is actually a challenge and test for machine intelligence. So we decided to explore the possibility of a full life cycle automation of c- puter animation generation. By full life cycle we mean the generation process of computer animation from a children s story in natural language text form to the final animated movie. It is of course a task of immense difficulty. However, we decided to try our best and to see how far we could go. 400 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Measuring the quality of a complex service like critical care that combines the highest technology with the most intimate caring is a challenge. Recently, con sumers, clinicians, and payers have requested more formal assessments and… comparisons of the quality and costs of medical care [2]. Donabedian [1] pro posed a framework for thinking about the quality of medical care that separates quality into three components: structure, process, and outcome. An instructive analogy for understanding this framework is to imagine a food critic evaluating the quality of a restaurant. The critic might comment on the decoration and lighting of the restaurant, how close the tables are to each other, the extent of the wine list and where the chef trained. These are all evaluations of the restaurant structure. In addition, the critic might comment on whether the service was courteous and timely - measures of process. Finally, the critic might comment on outcomes like customer satisfaction or food poisoning. Similarly, to a health care critic, structure is the physical and human resources used to deliver medi cal care. Processes are the actual treatments offered to patients. Finally, outcomes are what happens to patients, for example, mortality, quality of life, and satisfac tion with care (Table 1). There is a debate about which of these measurements is the most important measure of quality. 396 pp. Englisch.

This conference built on the success… of the rst con- rence in this series, ZB2000, held at the University ofYork in the UK. The location of ZB2002 in Grenoble re ects the important work in the area of formal methods carried out at the Laboratoire Logiciels Systemes ` Reseaux within the Institut d Informatique et Mathematiques Appliquees de Grenoble (LSR-IMAG), especially involving the B method. B and Z are two important formal methods that share a common conceptual o- gin; each are leading approaches applied in industry and academia for the speci cation and development (using formal re nement) of computer-based systems. At ZB2002 the B and Z communities were brought together to hold a second joint conference that simultaneously incorporated the 13th International Z User Meeting and the 4th Int- national Conference on the B method. Although organized logistically as an integral event, editorial control of the joint conference remained vested in two separate but c- perating program committees that respectively determined its B and Z content, but in a coordinated manner. 552 pp. Englisch.
