Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The International User Modeling Conferences are the events at which research foundations are being laid for the personalization of computer systems. In the last 15 years, the field of user modeling has produced significant new theories and methods to analyze and model computer users in short and long term interactions. A user model is an explicit representation of properties of individual users or user classes. It allows the system to adapt its performance to user needs and preferences. Methods for personalizing human computer interaction based on user models have been successfully developed and applied in a number of domains, such as information filtering, adaptive natural language and hypermedia presentation, tutoring systems, e commerce and medicine. There is also a growing recognition of the need to evaluate the results of new user modeling methods and prototypes in empirical studies and a growing focus on evaluation methods. New trends in HCI create new and interesting challenges for user modeling. While consolidating results in traditional domains of interest, the user modeling field now also addresses problems of personalized interaction in mobile and ubiquitous computing and adaptation to user attitudes and affective states. Finally, with the spread of user modeling in everyday applications and on the Web, new concerns about privacy preservation are emerging. All these topics are covered in the proceedings of UM 2003, the 9th International Conference on User Modeling. 456 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The author emphasizes a non-uniform ellipticity condition as the main approach to regularity theory for solutions of convex variational problems with different types of non-standard growth conditions. This volume first focuses on elliptic variational problems with linear growth conditions. Here the notion of a 'solution' is not obvious and the point of view has to be changed several times in order to get some deeper insight. Then the smoothness properties of solutions to convex anisotropic variational problems with superlinear growth are studied. In spite of the fundamental differences, a non-uniform ellipticity condition serves as the main tool towards a unified view of the regularity theory for both kinds of problems.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

It was organized by members of Adalog, CS, UPS/IRIT and ONERA. Toulouse was certainly a very appropriate place for this conference. As the heart of the European aeronautic and space industry, it is a place where so- ware development leaves no place for failure. In the end, reliability is a matter of human skills. But these skills build upon methods, tools, components and c- trolled practices. By exposing the latest advances in these areas, the conference contributed to ful lling the needs of a very demanding industry. As in past years, the conference comprised a three-day technical program, during which the papers contained in these proceedings were presented, along with vendor presentations. The technical program was bracketed by two tutorial days, when attendees had the opportunity to catch up on a variety of topics related to the eld, at both introductory and advanced levels. On Friday, a workshopon¿QualityofServiceinComponent-BasedSoftwareEngineering¿was held. Further, the conference was accompanied by an exhibition where vendors presented their reliability-related products.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 448 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Agents in multiagent systems are concurrent autonomous entities that need to coordinate and to cooperate so as to perform their tasks; these coordination and cooperation tasks might be achieved through communication. Communication, also called interaction by some authors, thus represents one of the major topics in multiagent systems. This book presents the state of the art of research on communication in multiagent systems. First, three seminal papers by Cohen and Perrault, by Singh, and by Davis and Smith present background information and introduce the newcomer to the area. The main part of the book is devoted to current research work dealing with agent communication, communication for coordination and argumentation, protocols, and dialogue games and conversational agents. Finally, the last paper deals with the future of agent communication.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 336 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This volume contains the papers presented at the 11th SDL Forum, Stuttgart. As well as the papers, the 11th SDL Forum also hosted a system design competition sponsored by Solinet with a cash prize for the ¿best¿ design. This follows a similar competition at the SAM 2002 workshop (papers published in LNCS 2599). The winning entry from SAM 2002 is described in the last paper in this volume. The SDL Forum was rst held in 1982, and then every two years from 1985. Initially the Forum was concerned only with the Speci cation and Descr- tion Language rst standardized in the 1976 Orange Book of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). From the start this graphical CEFSM (communicating extended nite state machines) notation was used both to describe the implementation of systems and to specify systems (especially protocol systems in standards). In the early days both types of description were quite informal, though speci cations were certainly more formal than the main alternative: natural languagewith some ad hoc gures. Implementations were usually written in assembly language, which is at too low a level to reason well about the interaction between communic- ing agents within a system. In this case the notation provided an intermediate description that gave an overview of how the implementation worked, and often the actual logical development was done at the graphical level with hand coding of that description. 424 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Component-based software development, CBSD, is no longer just one more new paradigm in software engineering, but is effectively used in development and practice. So far, however, most of the efforts from the software engineering community have concentrated on the functional aspects of CBSD, leaving aside the treatment of the quality issues and extra-functional properties of software components and component-based systems. This book is the first one focusing on quality issues of components and component-based systems. The 16 revised chapters presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book; together with an introductory survey, they give a coherent and competent survey of the state of the art in the area. The book is organized in topical parts on COTS selection, testing and certification, software component quality models, formal models to quality assessment, and CBSD management.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 420 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The International Symposium on Smart Graphics 2003 was held on July 2¿4, 2003 in Heidelberg, Germany. It was the fourth event in a series that started in 1999 as an AAAI Spring Symposium. In response to the overwhelming success of the 1999 symposium, its organizers decided to turn it into a self-contained event in2000. WiththesupportofIBM,the rsttwoInternationalSymposiaonSmart Graphics were held at the T. J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, NY. The 2003 symposium was supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation and moved to the European Media Lab in Heidelberg, thus underlining the international character of the Smart Graphics enterprise and its community. The core idea behind these symposia is to bring together researchers and practitioners from the eld of computer graphics, arti cial intelligence, cog- tive psychology, and ne art. Each of these disciplines contributes to what we mean by the term ¿Smart Graphics¿: the intelligent process of creating expr- sive and esthetic graphical presentations. While artists and designers have been creating communicative graphics for centuries, arti cial intelligence focuses on automating this process by means of the computer. While computer graphics provides the tools for creating graphical presentations in the rst place, cog- tive sciences contribute the rules and models of perception necessary for the design of e ective graphics. The exchange of ideas between these four discip- nes has led to many exciting and fruitful discussions, and the Smart Graphics Symposia draw their liveliness from a spirit of open minds and the willingness to learn from and share with other disciplines. 256 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on OpenMP Applications and Tools, WOMPAT 2003. WOMPAT 2003 was held on June 26and 27, 2003 in Toronto, Canada. The workshop brought together the users and developers of the OpenMP API to meet, share ideas and experiences, and to discuss the latest developments in OpenMP and its applications. The OpenMP API is now a widely accepted standard for high-level shar- memory parallel programming. Since its introduction in 1997, OpenMP has gained support from the majority of high-performance compiler and hardware vendors. WOMPAT 2003 was the latest in a series of OpenMP-related workshops, which have included the annual o erings of the Workshop on OpenMP Appli- tions and Tools (WOMPAT), the European Workshop on OpenMP (EWOMP) and the Workshop on OpenMP: Experiences and Implementations (WOMPEI). The WOMPAT 2003 program committee formally solicited papers. Extended abstracts were submitted by authors and all abstracts were reviewed by three members of the program committee. Of the 17 submitted abstracts, 15 were selected for presentation at the workshop. This book was published in time to be available at WOMPAT 2003, and therefore we hope that the papers contained herein are timely and useful for current developers and researchers. This book also contains selected papers from WOMPAT 2002. No formal proceedings had been created for this previous o ering of the workshop, and so presenters were invited to prepare their papers for inclusion in this volume. 284 pp. Englisch.

This was the second of these schools to be held in Durham, having previously been hosted by the University of Lancaster and the University of Leicester. The purpose of the summer school was to present high quality instructional courses on topics at the forefront of numerical analysis research to postgraduate students. The speakers were Franco Brezzi, Gerd Dziuk, Nick Gould, Ernst Hairer, Tom Hou and Volker Mehrmann. This volume presents written contributions from all six speakers which are more comprehensive versions of the high quality lecture notes which were distributed to participants during the meeting. At the time of writing it is now more than two years since we first contacted the guest speakers and during that period they have given significant portions of their time to making the summer school, and this volume, a success. Indeed, the area of protein folding, docking and alignment is developing in response to needs for a mix of heterogeneous expertise spanning biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and statistics, among others. Some of the problems encountered in this area are not only important for the scienti c challenges they pose, but also for the opportunities they disclose intermsofmedicalandindustrialexploitation. Atypicalexampleiso eredby protein-drug interaction (docking), a problem posing daunting computational problems at the crossroads of geometry, physics and chemistry, and, at the same time, a problem with unimaginable implications for the pharmacopoeia of the future. The schoolfocused on problems posed by the study of the mechanisms - hind protein folding, and explored di erent ways of attacking these problems under objective evaluations of the methods. Together with a relatively small core of consolidated knowledge and tools, important re ections were brought to this e ort by studies in a multitude of directions and approaches. It is obviously impossible to predict which, if any, among these techniques will prove completely successful, but it is precisely the implicit dialectic among them that best conveys the current avor of the eld. Such unique diversity and richness inspired the format of the meeting, and also explains the slight departure of the present volume from the typical format in this series: the exposition of the current sediment is complemented here by a selection of quali ed specialized contributions.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 184 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Spatial cognition is an interdisciplinary research area involving artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, computational linguistics, geography, mathematics, biology, theoretical computer science, architecture, design, and philosophy of mind. As these different disciplines gain a deeper understanding of their fellow disciplines and their research approaches, they increasingly find ways to combine their insights and to conceive powerful mechanisms to analyze and synthesize cognitive systems. Spatial cognition has now reached a point where we can see how different pieces of the puzzle may fit together to form integrated systems of specialized cognitive components. The research triggers new quests for basic issues of cognition and sparks ideas for the development of technological applications that make use of spatial structures and spatial computation. Potential applications can be found in such diverse areas as autonomous robotics, geographic information systems, locati- based services, spatial task assistance, multi-agent communication, to name but a few. This third volume on Spatial Cognition marks the final phase of the German Spatial Cognition Priority Program. It augments the results presented in the two precursor volumes published in 1998 and 2000, respectively. The interdisciplinary 1 research program was established by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in 1996 and terminated after six years, the maximum duration of DFG priority programs. The Spatial Cognition Priority Program consists of 17 research projects at 13 research institutions throughout Germany. Besides carrying out research in individual projects and joint research between projects, the program organized ¿topical colloquiä and annual plenary colloquia, largely with internationalparticipation.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 432 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This volume contains the papers presented at the Fourth IAPR Workshop on Graph Based Representations in Pattern Recognition. The workshop was held at the King¿s Manor in York, England between 30 June and 2nd July 2003. The previous workshops in the series were held in Lyon, France (1997), Haindorf, Austria (1999), and Ischia, Italy (2001). The city of York provided an interesting venue for the meeting. It has been said that the history of York is the history of England. There have been both Roman and Viking episodes. For instance, Constantine was proclaimed emperor in York. The city has also been a major seat of ecclesiastical power and was also involved in the development of the railways in the nineteenth century. Much of York¿s history is evidenced by its buildings, and the King¿s Manor is one of the most important and attractive of these. Originally part of the Abbey, after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the building became a center of government for the Tudors and the Stuarts (who stayed here regularly on their journeys between London and Edinburgh), serving as the headquarters of the Council of the North until it was disbanded in 1561. The building became part of the University of York at its foundation in 1963. The papers in the workshop span the topics of representation, segmentation, graph-matching, graph edit-distance, matrix and spectral methods, and gra- clustering. 284 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book does not tell a story. Instead, it is about stories. Or rather, in technical terms, it is about scenarios. Scenarios of system behavior. It con centrates on reactive systems, be they software or hardware, or combined computer-embedded systems, including distributed and real-time systems. We propose a different way to program such systems, centered on inter object scenario-based behavior. The book describes a language, two tech niques, and a supporting tool. The language is a rather broad extension of live sequence charts (LSCs), the original version of which was proposed in 1998 by W. Damm and the first-listed author of this book. The first of the two techniques, called play-in, is a convenient way to 'play in' scenario based behavior directly from the system's graphical user interface (QUI). The second technique, play-out, makes it possible to execute, or 'play out', the behavior on the QUI as if it were programmed in a conventional intra object state-based fashion. All this is implemented in full in our tool, the Play-Engine. The book can be viewed as offering improvements in some ofthe phases of known system development life cycles, e.g., requirements capture and anal ysis, prototyping, and testing. However, there is a more radical way to view the book, namely, as proposing an alternative way to program reactivity, which, being based on inter-object scenarios, is a lot closer to how people think about systems and their behavior.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 404 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Since 1993, PROPOR Workshops have become an important forum for re- archers involved in the Computational Processing of Portuguese, both written and spoken. This PROPOR Workshop follows previous workshops held in 1993 (Lisboa, Portugal), 1996 (Curitiba, Brazil), 1998 (Porto Alegre, Brazil), 1999 ¿ (Evora, Portugal) and 2000 (Atibaia, Brazil). The workshop has increasingly contributed to bring together researchers and industry partners from both sides of the Atlantic. The constitution of an international program committee and the adoption of high-standard referee procedures demonstrate the steady de- lopment of the eld and of its scienti c community. This can also be seen in the realization of the satellite workshop AVALON, which constitutes the rst evaluation campaign of Portuguese NLP systems. Each one of the 64 submitted papers received a careful, triple blind-review by the program committee. All those who contributed are mentioned in the following pages. The reviewing process led to the selection of 41 papers for oral presentation, 24 regular papers and 17 short papers, which are published in this volume.
