Neuware -On March 8/9, 1976 a workshop on 'Mathematical Models in Medicine' was held at Mainz (German Federal Republic) by the group of 'Mathe matical Models' of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fUr Medizinische Doku mentation, Informatik und Statistik. Purpose of this conference was to bring together experts from the GFR and neighbouring countries working in this field to evaluate possibilities and limits of this area of research in discussions with interested participants. This issue of Lecture Notes contains the invited contributions as well as the relevan~ remarks made by the discussants. Corresponding to the aims of the workshop the contributors had been encouraged to demon strate their mathematical models in the light of actual applied examples. It had been our intention to restrict attention to a small number of specific areas in order to achieve a concentrated in depth treatment in these restricted areas. The areas chosen contain two - Epidemio logy and Cell Models - which in the organisers feeling are not yet as well established in Continental Europe and one - Pharmacokinetic- with a more direct appeal to applied workers. It provides an up-to-date review of the role of ions in the trans mission of signals from the perivascular space to the contractile ele ments of the smooth muscle cells. The various aspects are mainly discussed from a functional point of view and only few contributions concern the morphologic variations of cells .during varying ion activity. Special emphasis was placed on the significance of ion variations in the cerebral tissue and their rela tion to metabolic and nervous control of the brain vessels. It could be seen in this symposium that new techniques enabled the in vestigators to make considerable progress in the understanding of the actions and the interactions of ions on the membranes and on the inter nal structures of the smooth muscle cells if one compares the findings with the results of the previous symposium held in Ttibingen in 1972. It became evident that the insight into ionic actions enables the de velopment of powerful tools to be utilized in future therapy of dis turbances of local blood flow regulation. The participants of the symposium render thanks to the Dr. Thiemann GmbH in Ltinen, which supported the symposium and this publication in a generous way. Coronary units and new treatments have some what reduced the dramatic complications of the acute phase; but after the latter, evil effects of the disease remain at the physiological, psychological and social level. It is the aim of rehabi~itation to analyze these problems, to reduce them or to solve them whenever possible. When this conception of 'complete coronary care' took the lead, the necon ditioning effects of heart disease and of immobilization on physical conditi ons were emphasized: physical training programmes were prepared and their main lines and physiological effects are now fairly well known. But it was soon obvious that the psychological problems raised by the patient and his environment 'are equally important. Their approach is however much more difficult and their treatment particularly complex. So, the Council on Rehabilitation of the International Society of Cardiology is really grateful to Professor Dr. HALHUBER and Dr. Dr. STOCKSMEIER for giving the opportunity to specialists to discuss together this particular aspect of coronary disease. The discussions have been devoted to the methods of approaching the patient as well as to the therapeutic aspects and the role of psychologists in the rehabilitation programmes: some papers have been devoted also to the possible role of the personality as a risk factor in the development of the disease. 196 pp. Englisch.
