A Brief Introduction The main theme of this series of lectures are 'Random motions in random me dia'. The subject gathers a variety of probabilistic models often originated from physical sciences such as solid state physics, physical chemistry, oceanography, biophysics . . . , in which typically some diffusion mechanism takes place in an inho mogeneous medium. Randomness appears at two levels. It comes in the description of the motion of the particle diffusing in the medium, this is a rather traditional point of view for probability theory; but it also comes in the very description of the medium in which the diffusion takes place. 116 pp. Englisch.

The book covers a broad range of topics which are in the focus of contemporary singularity theory. Its idea emerged during two Singularities workshops held at the University of Lille (USTL) in 1999 and 2000. Due to the breadth of singularity theory, a single volume can hardly give the complete picture of today's progress. Nevertheless, this collection of papers provides a good snapshot of what is the state of affairs in the field, at the turn of the century. Several papers deal with global aspects of singularity theory. Classification of fam ilies of plane curves with prescribed singularities were among the first problems in algebraic geometry. Classification of plane cubics was known to Newton and classification of quartics was achieved by Klein at the end of the 19th century. The problem of classification of curves of higher degrees was addressed in numerous works after that. In the paper by Artal, Carmona and Cogolludo, the authors de scribe irreducible sextic curves having a singular point of type An (n 15) and a large (Le. , :::: 18) sum of Milnor numbers of other singularities. Collins el al. examine the benefits of employing small-scale microseismic and acoustic emission systems to investigate the temporal fracture mechanics of microcrack formation associated with a tunnel sealing experiment at the Underground Research Laboratory nuclear waste test site in Canada. They associate microseismic events with clusters of acoustic emissions and outline that both types of sources are generally characterized by deviatoric failure components. Using the same experimental setup, Hazzard el al. employed a bonded particle model to simulate shear microfraclures induced by the lunnel excavation. Comparing Ihe modeling results with information provided by the moniloring of microseismicity and acoustic emissions, the authors identify similarities in both the presence of foreshocks associated with macro-slip events, and the pallerns of energy release during loading. Hildyard and Young allempt to model the seismic wave interaction with fractured rock surrounding underground openings, through exper iments such as a rockbursl simulation, in situ events generating acoustic emissions, and laboratory fractures. Their results highlight that realistic wave modeling around openings requires the presence of a stress-dependent fracture stiffness coupling the surfaces of the fracture. Ultrasonic attenuation tomography and enhanced velocity tomography were studied by D~bski and Young for an earlier laboratory experiment of thennally induced fractures in granite. 617 pp. Englisch.

The course was one of four associated with the 1993-94 Fields Institute programme, which I helped to organise, entitled 'Artin L-functions'. Published as [132]' the final chapter of the course introduced a manner in which to construct class-group valued invariants from Galois actions on the algebraic K-groups, in dimensions two and three, of number rings. These invariants were inspired by the analogous Chin burg invariants of [34], which correspond to dimensions zero and one. The classical Chinburg invariants measure the Galois structure of classical objects such as units in rings of algebraic integers. However, at the 'Galois Module Structure' workshop in February 1994, discussions about my invariant (0,1 (L/ K, 3) in the notation of Chapter 5) after my lecture revealed that a number of other higher-dimensional co homological and motivic invariants of a similar nature were beginning to surface in the work of several authors. Encouraged by this trend and convinced that K-theory is the archetypical motivic cohomology theory, I gratefully took the opportunity of collaboration on computing and generalizing these K-theoretic invariants. These generalizations took several forms - local and global, for example - as I followed part of number theory and the prevalent trends in the 'Galois Module Structure' arithmetic geometry. 309 pp. Englisch.

The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to give an introduction to the index theory for symplectic matrix paths and its iteration theory, which form a basis for the Morse theoretical study on Hamilto nian systems, and to give applications of this theory to periodic boundary value problems of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. Here the iteration theory means the index theory of iterations of periodic solutions and symplectic matrix paths. (2) to serve as a reference book on these topics. There are many different ways to introduce the index theory for symplectic paths in order to establish Morse type index theory of Hamiltonian systems. In this book, I have chosen a relatively elementary way, i.e., the homotopy classification method of symplectic matrix paths. It depends only on linear algebra, point set topology, and certain basic parts of linear functional analysis. Almost half a century ago, the first member of the macrolides, erythromycin, was introduced as a treatment option for bacterial infections. Erythromycin is a very complex fermentation product obtained from the soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora ery thraea (originally named Streptomyces erythreus). The success of erythromycin, based on its efficacy and tolerability, stimulated researchers throughout the world to undertake intense efforts to understand the biology and chemistry of macrolides and to use this experience to improve the properties of this compound class. The second generation of macrolides, based on chemical modifications of erythromy cin, is currently being in broad use, especially for treatment of respiratory tract infections. We presently foresee the introduction of a new generation of macro lides, i. e. the ketolides, which have the potential to overcome rising resistance problems. This monograph is intended to give the interested reader an overview on 'macrolide experience', covering important areas from basic research to clinical use. Starting from a historic overview, the essential basic parameters - efficacy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacology - are highlighted in order to introduce the reader to the rationale for clinical use of macrolides.
