For a geometer, at least under some assumptions on the manifold M, this is just the connected component of the identity in the group of all symplectic diffeomorphisms. From the viewpoint of mechanics, Ham(M,O) is the group of all admissible motions. What is the minimal amount of energy required in order to generate a given Hamiltonian diffeomorphism I An attempt to formalize and answer this natural question has led H. Hofer [HI] (1990) to a remarkable discovery. It turns out that the solution of this variational problem can be interpreted as a geometric quantity, namely as the distance between I and the identity transformation. Moreover this distance is associated to a canonical biinvariant metric on Ham(M, 0). Since Hofer's work this new ge ometry has been intensively studied in the framework of modern symplectic topology. In the present book I will describe some of these developments. Hofer's geometry enables us to study various notions and problems which come from the familiar finite dimensional geometry in the context of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. They turn out to be very different from the usual circle of problems considered in symplectic topology and thus extend significantly our vision of the symplectic world. 136 pp. Englisch.

It is based on the workshop 'Approaches to Singular Analysis' which was held on April 8-10, 1999, at Humboldt University of Berlin. The aim of this workshop was to bring together young mathematicians interested in partial differential operators on singular con figurations. The main idea was to look at different approaches that have been proposed, and try to understand to which extent they overlap and how they differ. The workshop took place in a rather relaxed atmosphere. The participants appreciated that there was a discussion session every day, which gave a lot of room for an open exchange of ideas. This book contains articles by workshop participants and invited contributions. The former are expanded versions of talks at the workshop; they give introductions to various pseudodifferential calculi and discussions of relations between them. In addition, we invited a limited number of papers from mathematicians who have made significant contributions to this field. Unfortunately, several of these invita tions were turned down due to other commitments. For this reason, only a very small number of contributions from non-participants remain. The absence of any particular name from the list of (invited) contributors should not be interpreted as a bias of the editors against that scientist. The volume contains papers in operator theory and its applications (understood in a very wide sense), many of them reflecting, 1 directly or indirectly, a profound impact of the work of Moshe Livsic. Moshe (Mikhail Samuilovich) Livsic was born on July 4, 1917, in the small town of Pokotilova near Uman, in the province of Kiev in the Ukraine; his family moved to Odessa when he was four years old. In 1933 he enrolled in the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Odessa State University, where he became a student of M. G. Krein and an active participant in Krein's seminar - one of the centres where the ideas and methods of functional analysis and operator theory were being developed. Besides M. G. Krein, M. S. Livsic was strongly influenced B. Va. Levin, an outstanding specialist in the theory of analytic functions. A by deep understanding of operator theory as well as function theory and a penetrating search of connections between the two, were to become one of the landmarks of M. S. Livsic's work. M. S.
