Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. ## AERONAUTICAL HISTORY in Pictures by Science Museum 1961## ## THIS BOOK: Classified FINE: This Book is the 1961 edition. Originally published in 1956. ## This book is in fine condition: some signs of storage colouring, but it is not ripped or torn. The cover has various planes in black and white with titles and info in green bands, as well as loads of pictures and drawings of aircraft with detailed descriptions. Wonderful aeronautical history book .## ## NATIONAL AERONAUTICAL COLLECTION: The history of aeronautical progress is illustrated in the National Aeronautical Collection at the Science Museum. The main trends in the development of balloons, airships and aeroplanes are shown by 200 scale models and many original aircraft now historically famous. Among these aircraft are the Vickers Vimy of Alcock and Brown, the Supermarine S.6B and the Gloster E.28/39. A replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, made before the original was returned in 1948 to the Smithsonian Institution at Washington, commemorates the work of the Wright brothers, while the pre-history of aeroplane flight is well illustrated by Stringfellow's model of 1848, Henson's 1843 model of his proposed aeroplane together with machines and apparatus of other pioneers.## ## Aircraft propulsion may be studied from engines and propellers. The engines of Stringfellow, Maxim and the Wright brothers are but a few of the 60 on display, including the Whittle W.l. flight engine and the latest types of gas turbine units. A comprehensive collection of air-mail stamps from the Penn-Gaskell bequest is also exhibited with many contemporary prints of early balloon flights.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Soft cover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. ### Science In The 18th Century -- King George III Collection by Alan Q Morton 1983### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as AS NEW is the 1983 Edition, first published in 1983 ?The softcover is full colour and laminated. There is no bumping or foxing. The book is clean and tidy, with beautiful images of the science objects mentioned in the text. ## IMAGES: Two or more images of all our books and maps we provide so you know what you buy.## READ ON for more information and details. ## ## Legacy and Significance: - The King George III Collection isn't just a historical curiosity; it represents the foundations of modern science. It reminds us of the ingenuity, creativity, and dedication of those who paved the way for our current understanding of the natural world.## ## 1. The Book and Its Context: - The book, by Alan Q. Morton, sheds light on the King George III Collection?a remarkable assemblage of scientific instruments and equipment. This collection epitomises natural philosophy (what we now call science) in the eighteenth century. Within this collection, you'll find various pieces of equipment commissioned, made, and used during that era. Notably, many of these instruments were either directly commissioned by King George III himself or were more elaborate versions of standard equipment crafted for him by George Adams, a prominent London instrument maker.## 2. Lavish Illustrations and Insights: - The illustrated book allows readers to visually explore the intricate instruments that played a role in advancing scientific knowledge during the eighteenth century. - Beyond the visual appeal, the book provides context. It delves into how these instruments were used, who used them, and the scientific inquiries they supported. Imagine a world where these devices were cutting-edge technology, and their operation was both art and science.## ## 3. S. C. T. Demainbray and George Adams: - One of the key figures associated with this collection is S. C. T. Demainbray?an itinerant lecturer. His demonstration apparatus is part of the King George III Collection. - Additionally, George Adams, the skilled London instrument maker, contributed significantly. He crafted more sophisticated versions of standard equipment for the king. Adams's work exemplified the craftsmanship and precision required for scientific progress in that era.## ## 4. Scientific Life in Eighteenth-Century London: - By exploring this collection, readers gain insights into the scientific zeitgeist of the time. It was an era of curiosity, exploration, and experimentation. - Imagine scientists, natural philosophers, and even the monarch himself engaging with these instruments?observing, measuring, and theorising. The collection becomes a window into their world.## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Please get in touch with me for a shipping quotation. ##.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. ## THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF CYCLES by C F Caunter 1972,: As illustrated by the collection of cycles in the Science Museum,## ## THIS BOOK: Classified FINE: This Book is the 1972 edition. Originally published in 1972. ## This book is in fine condition: some signs of storage colouring but is not ripped or torn. Plain green cover with black text, loads of pictures and drawings of cycles. Wonderful cycle history book .## ## INTRODUCTION: As a result of some eighty years of technical development, commercial production and worldwide use, the cycle, particularly in the form of the bicycle, has become an integral feature of everyday human life that serves various recreational, social, sporting and practical needs. ## ## The advantages of the modern cycle are well known: it is simple in construction, light in weight, efficient and reliable in operation, and economical to purchase and maintain. It is, in its way, one of the most remarkable practical applications of that unique human invention, the wheel. It provides the cheapest form of transport and is used by twelve million individuals in Great Britain alone and millions worldwide. Its essential mechanical advantage makes a journey of 100 miles possible for the same expenditure of muscular energy required to cover 20 miles on foot. The addition of ultra-light motor units to the cycle, which began as long ago as 1900 and has increased rapidly since 1945, has substantially enlarged its scope of utility and range of operation.## ## Although the commercial production of cycles originated in France, it was not long before England, in general, and Coventry, in particular, took and maintained the lead as the producers of the best cycles obtainable. The text of the Historical Survey, which follows, is intended to serve as an introduction to this story of the development of the cycle with special reference to the National Cycle Collection at the Science Museum, and a separate Catalogue of Exhibits gives detailed technical information about individual items. The number of books published on this subject is not large, particularly after 1900; a list of some of the more important works, most of which are available in the Science Museum Library, will be found at the end. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
