Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. x, 295 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, without dust jacket (as issued). Variorum Collected Studies CS446. Robert Grosseteste was one of the most eminent and universal scholars of his time. At his death, in 1253, as Bishop of Lincoln, he left behind him a literary heritage, which contemporary scholarship is still trying to come fully to terms with. This volume offers a series of studies concerning aspects of Grosseteste's thought on religious and metaphysical themes. Paying particular attention to questions of chronology and sources, the author aims to elicit his deeper presuppositions and to isolate certain of his intuitions that seem quite original. The articles include two unedited writings by Grosseteste, on the sun and on human nature, and place the accent not on the possible unity of his intellectual initiatives, but on their variety - concerning language and thought, the nature of light, the Ten Commandments and the Christian conscience, mystical union and the reasons for the incarnation. Contents: The Sun as res and signum: Grosseteste's Commentary on Ecclesiasticus ch. 43, vv. 1-5; Robert Grosseteste and the reunion of the Church; Robert Grosseteste's theory of human nature with the text of his conference Ecclesia Sancta celebrat; The absolute predestination of Christ in the theology of Robert Grosseteste; Der Breif des Robert Grosseteste an Magister Adam Rufus; Language, tongue and thought in the writings of Robert Grosseteste; The chronology of Robert Grosseteste's Writings on nature and natural philosophy; Ein Paradigma der Lichtmetaphysik: Robert Grosseteste; Robert Grosseteste on the Ten Commandments; Index.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Xii, 300 pp. Appendix, bibliography, index. Illustrated with 21 figures. Octavo. Matte black/grey dust jacket with elizabethan bearded man. Minor shelf wear to jacket, flaps intact. Book itself is clean and tight, nice copy. "Focusing on representations of beards in English Renaissance culture, this study elucidates how fetish objects validate ideological systems of power by materializing complex value in multiple registers. Providing detailed discussions of not only bearded men but also beardless boys, bearded women, and half-bearded hermaphrodites, author Mark Albert Johnston argues that attending closely to early modern English culture's treatment of the beard as a fetish object ultimately exposes the contingency of categories like sex, gender, age, race, and sexuality. Johnston mines a diverse cross-section of contemporary discourses -- adult and children's drama, narrative verse and prose, popular ballads, epigrams and proverbs, historical accounts, pamphlet literature, diaries, letters, wills, court records and legal documents, medical and surgical manuals, lectures, sermons, almanacs, and calendars -- in order to provide proof for his cultural claims. Johnston's evidence invokes some of the period's most famous voices -- William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, John Lyly, Phillip Stubbes, John Marston, George Chapman, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Middleton, and Samuel Pepys, for example -- but Johnston also introduces us to an array of lesser-known Renaissance authors and playwrights whose works support the notion that the beard was a palimpsestic site of contested meaning at which complex and contradictory values clash and converge. Johnston's reading of Marxist, Freudian, and anthropological theories of the fetish phenomenon acknowledges their divergent emphases -- erotic, economic, racial and religious -- while suggesting that the imbrication of diverse registers that fetish accomplishes facilitates its cultural and psychic naturalizing function." ; Women and Gender in the Early Modern World; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 312 pages.…
