First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 4to. 12'' x 10''. Horace Walpole (1717-1797), as the youngest son of the powerful Whig minister Robert Walpole, grew up at the centre of Georgian society and politics and circulated amongst the elite literary, aesthetic, and intellectual circles of his day. His brilliant letters and writings have made him the best-known commentator on the rich cultural life of eighteenth-century England. In his own day, he was most famous for his extraordinary collections of rare books and manuscripts, antiquities, paintings, prints and drawings, furniture, ceramics, arms and armour, and curiosities, all displayed at his pioneering Gothic Revival house at Strawberry Hill, on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham. This timely and groundbreaking study of the history and reception of Walpole's collection as it was formed and arranged at Strawberry Hill coincides with a planned restoration of this endangered house. Horace Walpole's 'Strawberry Hill' assembles an international team of distinguished scholars to explore the ways in which Strawberry Hill and its collections engaged with the creation of various and interconnected political, national, dynastic, cultural, and imagined histories. Contains (xvi), 368 printed pages of text with monochrome and colour illustrations and archive photographs throughout. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused new book. "In the 1950s American painter Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) took a dramatic turn away from his early work, exploring new vocabularies of both abstract and representational styles, which would come to be known as the artist's "Berkeley period." This era has long been recognized as one of the most interesting chapters in postwar American art, yielding many of Diebenkorn's best-known works. Richard Diebenkorn: The Berkeley Years, 1953-1966 examines Diebenkorn's process and output during this decisive period. Three original essays explore the artist's evolving conceptions of abstraction and representation, emphasizing the interrelationships between the abstract paintings and drawings and related landscapes, figurative works, and still lifes, as well as Diebenkorn's ongoing interest in aerial views. Featuring several significant works that have rarely been on view, as well as previously unpublished photographs from the Diebenkorn archives, this important publication is the first comprehensive look at this critical period.--Publisher. // **Somewhat heavy item. 5 lbs when packed. 16 x 14 x 4 inches. Brown cloth hardcovers in mylar-covered dustjackets. Light wear to jackets. Original drawings and paintings assocated with the voyages of Captain James Cook. The famous explorer made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. There were a number of artists on board. Sydney Parkinson was heavily involved in documenting the botanists' findings, completing 264 drawings before his death near the end of the first voyage. His illustrations were of immense scientific value to British botanists. Cook's second expedition included William Hodges, who produced notable landscape paintings of Tahiti, Easter Island, and other locations.
