Every major record label is bring-ing out jazz reissues and new releases, and dating couples are turning up in the jazz clubs alongside the usual middle-aged male fans. But this popularity comes at a cost:Jazz has become identified with its past, and especially with bebop, the style that first dominated the jazz scene in the forties and fifties. Bebop started out as a daring departure from the Conventions of Swing, but ironically, many listeners and musicians now experience this style as a comfortable orthodoxy that defines the limits of jazz. In his third collection of essays, Francis Davis shares his insights into this new jazz main-stream: the greatness of its sources, the sterility of Performance that follows those sources too closely. He also conveys his listening experi-ences beyond the mainstreamfrom the futur-istic jazz of the avant-garde to the preforties styles that some performers continue to devel-op, at the risk of being labeled old hat. Finally, Davis leaves behind the boundaries of jazz alto-gether, pursuing its adventurous spirit into a broader musical territory that includes musical theatre, rock, and rap. The book is organized in four sections, the first focused on well-known musicians who represent the jazz mainstream, including such flgures as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. The second section Covers some alternative directions that enliven today's jazz scene, from thirties-style swing to sixties-style free jazz. In the third section Davis writes about music so near the edge it may not be jazz at all, like Sun Ra's outer-space extravaganzas and Don Byron's African-American klez music. A final section examines a broader swath of populär music, ranging from Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney to Michael Jackson and Prince. ISBN 9780028704715 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 360.
