Ray theory has the advantage of conceptual simplicity and intuitive appeal. In ray theory, it is assumed that disturbances propagate along rays and that the interac…tion of such rays with inhomogeneities follows simple geometrical rules which can be established on the basis of solutions to canonical problems. If these rules are known, rays can be traced and, in principle, the signals that are carried by all rays passing through a point of observation can be superimposed to yield the complete wave field. From the mathematical point of view, ray theory gives an expansion which has asymptotic validity with respect to distance, frequency or time. The purpose of this book is threefold: to state the basic ideas of ray theory within the context of the theory of elasticity; to discuss the necessary methods of applied mathematics and to present a number of basic results for the applications of ray methods to waves in elastic solids.
