hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1997 signed and inscribed first edition, association copy (1977 Nobel winner Roger Guillemin), Nauka Publishers (Moscow, Russia), 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches tall glossy pictorial hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), white lettering to front cover and spine, 233 pp. Laid in is a card reading, 'From th…e Private Colllection of Dr. Roger and Lucienne Guillemin, Nobel Laureate, 1977, Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA.' Roger Charles Louis Guillemin (1924-2024) was a French-American neuroscientist who received the National Medal of Science in 1976, and the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1977 for his work on neurohormones. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with a couple of tiny abrasions to the lower spine. On the blank front free-endpaper, nicely inscribed and signed by the author to Guillemin, widely considered the 'father of neuroendocrinology edition, association copy (1977 Nobel winner Roger Guillemin), y.' Below this, Dr. Guillemin taped a section of an envelope with the author's Philadelphia address and wrote above this his email address. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~SP19~ [2.0P] Explores the discovery of atrial and encephalic releasing hormones, their role in heart function, and the connection between the hypothalamus and the heart's endocrine system. Author Armen A. Galoyan (1929?2012) was a leading researcher in neuroendocrine immunology. The contributions of his laboratory became milestones in totally new concepts and with demonstration at the molecular level of cardioactive peptides of both hypothalamic (1978) and atrial (1979) origins, new cytokines from hypothalamus as unique regulators of immune competent cells in bone marrow. The primary structures of these brain immunomodulators were fully established (2001) with proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs) as major constituents. Galoyan introduced the terms of neuroendocrine immune system and neuroendocrine immunology. Then he and his group demonstrated and reported extensively on antibacterial, immunotropic, neuroprotective and even antitumor properties of these PRPs and their analogues for the treatment of infectious, immune, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases (2001?2009). Armen Galoyan and co-workers published over 700 papers in world-widely known journals. The novel scientific results reported and discussed at numerous international symposia are summarized in three fundamental monographs under his name and in the Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology, 3rd ed., v. Neuroimmunology (2008). His latest book Brain Immune System Signal Molecules in Protection from Aerobic and Anaerobic Infections (Springer) was published just a year before his death in 2012.

Octavo,297 pp.,colour photographs, fine copy in softcover. Pensoft Series Faunistica, No. 70. Dragonflies are a beautiful, important and conspicuous component of freshwater, whether still or flowing. They are also important indicators of freshwater quality and condition, which is significant for current and future conservation i…nitiatives in South Africa. The country's dragonflies are particularly interesting as many are special or endemic to the area, making it a part of the world of great conservation significance. Sadly however, many of these endemic species are highly threatened, especially by invasive alien trees which shade out their habitat. This book is about this exciting dragonfly fauna. Besides aiming at increasing awareness of these lovely and sensitive insects, it enables their identification, using several approaches, from simple flick-through to the use of comprehensive identification keys. Each species is also given a Dragonfly Biotic Index, covering a spectrum from the most common, widespread and tolerant species through to the most threatened, rare and sensitive ones. Michael Samways is Professor and Chair of the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology, Stellenbosch University., He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa and a Fellow of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has published 260 scientific papers and written several books on insect biology and conservation, the most recent of which is Insect Diversity Conservation, Cambridge University Press. He has won several awards, and in the last two years, these include the Stellenbosch University Rector's Award for Research Excellence, the John Herschel Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa, and the Senior Captain Scott Medal from the South African Academy for Science and Art. Michael is on several international editorial boards and involved with various international committees devoted to invertebrate conservation. Indeed, his research team is dedicated to the conservation of invertebrates and other biodiversity, which so enrich our planet.
