Published by Faint wear along one horizontal fold line and an uneven left margin. Four small worm holes in the sea south of the island. Otherwise in near fine condition, with nice hand color on thick, watermarked paper.
This detailed map of the island of Hispaniola was issued in 1730 by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, a French cartographer who was renown for his meticulous and thoroughly researched productions. The island is shown split between French claims to the west (what would ultimately become the country of Haiti) and the Spanish claims to the east (modern day Dominican Republic). Pictorial topography gives some indication of the mountainous interior, while additional detail is provided for maritime purposes. Various shoals and underwater obstacles are depicted, as are primary routes of water-borne navigation between various islands. Prevailing wind patterns throughout the Caribbean often dictated a particular course between two places.
