About the book >.>.> The son of a carpenter from Dalton-in-Furness, Romney was apprenticed for a time to Christopher Steele in the north of England. He came to London in 1762, leaving his wife and family behind him. Elizabeth Romney never intruded on her husband's metropolitan career and it was not until 1798 that Romney returned to her, weak in mind and body. In 1768 Romney made a short visit to Paris and in 1773 he went to Italy, accompanied by Ozias Humphrey. On his departure two years later he wrote to a fellow student in Rome, 'Do not let the sweets of that divine place escape you; do not leave a stone unturned that is classical, nor even a line of the great Michaelangelo. Returning to London, Romney resumed his career in portrait painting with a commission from the Duke of Richmond, but John Flaxman, one of the artist's few close friends, remarked that Romney's 'heart and soul were engaged in historical and ideal painting.
