Numerose cartoline mostrano la vita in piazza.- Alla fine di Corso Repubblica di Velletri, dirigendosi verso la Basilica di San Clemente, si arriva a piazza Mazzini, snodo importante della città che collega in pratica la parte alta a quella 'bassa'.Qui un tempo periodicamente si riunivano i mercanti per smerciare i loro prodotti e il luogo si chiamava piazza del piano. Nel XVII secolo si decise di realizzare una fontana monumentale che facesse un po' il verso a quelle della non lontana Roma.Nel 1612 si affidò la realizzazione allo scultore-scalpellino Angelo Pellegrini che, su disegno di Massimiliano Bruni, fece uscire fuori dal travertino la fontana che vediamo oggi, con una vasca inferiore a forma irregolare e una più piccola superiore, collegate da una colonna arrotondata nelle forme basse e bordata da una serie di figure mitologiche attualmente malconce, tanto che è difficile stabilire quale personaggio rappresentino.
