Diary of a Welsh Swagman 1869-1894 is the real-life colonial journal of Joseph Jenkins, a wealthy Welsh tenant farmer who abruptly abandoned his family at age 51 to spend 25 years working as an itinerant labourer (swagman) in Victoria, Australia. This abridged and annotated volume was compiled by his grandson, William Evans, after the diaries were discovered in a Welsh attic 70 years after Jenkins' death. The Core Narrative The Sudden Flight: In 1868, despite being a successful farmer and award-winning poet in Cardiganshire, Wales, Jenkins left his home overnight with only his rent money due to an unhappy marriage and a battle with alcoholism. He sailed to Melbourne, arriving in March 1869.Life on the Road: For the next 25 years, Jenkins lived the grueling life of a swagman, walking hundreds of miles with his bedroll ("swag"). He worked 16-hour days as a manual farm labourer, wood-cutter, fencer, and plowman across the Ballarat, Castlemaine, and Maldon districts. The Settled Years: As age caught up with him, he used a "miner's right" to settle slightly, eventually working as a town street-cleaner and drainage worker for the Maldon council until his return to Wales in 1894.Key Themes & Historical Value Vivid Colonial Record: Unlike most working-class labourers of the era who were illiterate, Jenkins was highly educated. He meticulously documented the micro-details of rural 19th-century Australian history, including food prices, crop cycles, wages, and changing economic conditions. Social and Political Commentary: Jenkins was a progressive thinker far ahead of his time. In his daily entries, he fiercely criticized government policies, expressed deep concern over land degradation, condemned cruelty to animals, and criticized the colonial treatment of Indigenous Australians. A Poetic Soul: Writing under his Welsh bardic name Amnon II, Jenkins frequently interspersed his harsh daily realities of toothaches and exhaustion with beautiful poetry composed in both English and Welsh. Significance: The book serves as a rare, unbroken 25-year psychological character study and historical primary source. For decades, it has stood as a highly regarded textbook for Australian history students to study the realities of colonial bush.…
