Hasan-Âli Yücel was appointed as the Minister of Culture in the government formed just after Atatürk's passing away. This change directly pointed out a significant shift in the cultural politics of the country and the ideological framework of this politics was identified as the Turkish humanism. According to this approach, severing all ties with the authentic culture belonged to the post-Islamic era and constructing modern Turkish identity based on Western humanism consisting of Greek and Latin works was aimed. Cypriot muleteers served in the British army in the Macedonian front during the First World War. Both Cypriot men and island mules were used in the war. Mules were used in the war due to their carrying ability under harsh geographical conditions. The British government utilized the existing economic problems in Cyprus to attract Cypriot support. For some Cypriots joining the war serving in the army was the only way to provide for the livelihood of their family. In fact, Turkish Cypriots participated in the Great War against the Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, there were differences in terms of religious creed between Greek Cypriots and the British: the Greek Cypriots were Orthodox while the British people were Protestant. Hence, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots had some troubles about joining the Great War. Despite these differences, Greek and Turkish Cypriots set aside their national and religious feelings and were united in the same army to serve Great Britain. Sönmez' book is centered on Idris Bidlisi (d. 1520), a Persianate scholar whose family originates from Bidlis, a Kurdish political center in the fifteenth century. After providing an account of Bidlisi's life, the second part of Sönmez' work focuses on Bidlisi's diplomatic role in attracting the military and political allegiances of the Kurdish lords to the Ottoman center. In the third part of her book, Sönmez discusses Bidlisi's political writings, focusing on the question of the legitimacy of Ottoman rule for a Muslim audience.
