The title panel is missing from the spine There is chipping at the bottom of the spine and the front panel is completely detached. with some cracking to the edges but the binding is secure. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and there is light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Browning to the page edges. Browning to the endpapers with the name of a previous owner in ink to the front free endpaper - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge. Her name and date (1774) are also written in ink to the front pastedown and the title page with the name also at the beginning of the first poem. The Remains of Rev. Mr. Pomfret at the back of the book is given as the sixth edition from 1766. There is some browning to the pages but they are otherwise generally unmarked.…

Leather rather worn & scuffed with a small section missing from the rear board, corners worn though, spine scuffed & worn with loss to the head & tail, hinges cracked but holding firmly. Gather Nn is a little loose in the binding resulting in the fore edge being worn, occasional ink splash & smudge, a nice copy. Fourth Richardson Edition. in contemporary mottled calf, the spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, red goatskin label lettered in gilt, binding slightly rubbed and headcap chipped, but generally a good, sound copy. 8vo (172 x 100 mm), pp. [ii], xxxiii, [3], 192, with an engraved title-page and 25 engraved plates, each with multiple images illustrating each of the 244 fables, An attractive copy of the fourth of five illustrated editions with Richardson?s Life of Aesop. It was first published in 1739, with a title-page dated 1740, with subsequent editions in 1749, 1753 (two issues) and 1775. All of the editions are scarce, with ESTC listing four copies of the first edition, two copies of the second, five of the third edition. The 25 engraved plates include delightful illustrations in miniature for each of the fables, with a brief caption and fable number given above each illustration. The engraved title-page is also very attractive, with an idealised illustration of a landscape peopled with different animals.
