Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Saddle-stitched. Second edition. Pamphlet, 54 pages. In Good condition. Moderate wear to spine. Scattered light foxing to first and last page. Consistent damp staining throughout interior. RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville, Room A, General Ephemera Part 2. Published at the height of the presidential contest of 1800, Alexander Hamilton (the former Secretary of the Treasury), here delivers a blistering attack on President John Adams, the nominal head of his own party. Ostensibly written to support Charles Cotesworth Pinckney as an alternative Federalist candidate, the Letter laid bare the deep rift within the Federalist ranks and exposed the personal animosities that fractured the party. Hamilton's critique denounced Adams as vain, erratic, and unfit for high office, a judgment that reverberated across the voting public and was quickly seized upon by Democratic-Republicans as proof of Federalist disarray. Though intended for a limited audience, the pamphlet became widely circulated, and its impact was catastrophic for both Adams and the Federalists. Adams's standing was badly damaged, and the Federalist Party emerged from the 1800 election divided and weakened, never to regain its former dominance. As such, the Letter is a key artifact of the "Revolution of 1800," the bitterly contested election that resulted in the peaceful transfer of power from Federalists to Jeffersonian Republicans. Beyond its immediate political role, the pamphlet illustrates the emergence of party fracture, negative campaigning, and the press's power in shaping the early Republic's political culture. 1403114. "Not denying to Mr. Adams patriotism and integrity, and even talents of a certain kind, I should be deficient in candor, were I to conceal the conviction, that he does not possess the talents adapted to the Administration of Government, and that there are great and intrinsic defects in his character, which unfit him for the office of Chief Magistrate." The Great Betrayal, which may have very well cost Adams the Election of 1800. Very Popular in its time, the work was reprinted four times during the 1800 election.

54, [2 blanks] pp. Untrimmed, generously margined. Last two leaves bound out of order, scattered mild foxing and light toning. Very Good, with an attractive ornament at the base of page 54. All printings of this pamphlet appeared just before the impending election of 1800. This is the only Philadelphia imprint; NAIP records four others, all from New York. Adams "does not possess the talents adapted to the Administration of Government," and "there are great and intrinsic defects in his character, which unfit him for the office of Chief Magistrate." Despite Adams's "moral qualifications," Hamilton-- himself jealous of the public affection bestowed upon others-- says Adams has "a vanity without bounds, and a jealousy capable of discoloring every object." He reviews Adams's career, including his diplomatic service, Vice Presidency, and Presidency. Hamilton supports, not his old adversary Thomas Jefferson, but the Federalist Thomas Pinckney of South Carolina. Howes H116. Ford 70. Evans 37570.
