When originally published in 1905 created an uproar as the famous actor Sir Henry Irving had recently died having suffered a stroke on stage and the novel was seen to be in bad taste and exploitative. However Gould proved he'd completed the manuscript several months prior to Irving's death although noting that he had based his character on that of Irving.
