Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Paul Getty bought his first classical antiquity - a small terracotta sculpture - at auction in London in 1939. Over the next four decades, he became a passionate collector, and in the 1950s he created a trust for "the diffusion of artistic and general knowledge". Building on that early foundation, successive antiquities curators at the Getty Museum have amassed a collection that contains more than 50,000 ancient objects. In prose accompanied by a colour photograph of each object, this handbook of the Antiquities Collection presents nearly 200 of the Getty Museum's most important pieces, including J. Paul Getty's most prized possession, the "Lansdowne Herakles". Spanning thousands of years - from pre-classical times as far back as the third millennium BC through the 3rd century AD - the Getty Antiquities Collection encompasses the Cycladic, Greek, Etruscan, South Italian, Roman and Romano-Egyptian cultures. It includes ancient Greek vases; monumental marble sculptures and diminutive bronzes; Greek and Roman gems; and Hellenistic silverware, jewellery and glass. The handbook includes a foreword by museum director Deborah Gribbon and an introduction tracing the history of the collection by antiquities curator Marion True. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In 1568, Vasari noted that Pontormo painted a beautiful work, a portrait of Francesco Guardi. In 1612, however, the name of Cosimo de'Medici was attached to a description of the portrait. In this volume, Cropper argues that the subject of the painting is indeed Francesco Guardi. She discusses not only the specific determination of the sitter but the tools and methods used in general for establishing the people and places portrayed in works of art.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Getty Villa in Malibu includes the only museum in the United States devoted solely to classical antiquities. The Museum building seeks to replicate the ground plan and major architectural features - insofar as they have been studied and documented - of the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius; the surrounding landscaping is modelled on ancient Roman gardens. After undergoing lengthy renovations in its conversion from a site originally dedicated to the Museum, its six curatorial collections, and related conservation departments, the site is opening in winter 2006 as an expanded centre for the study of classical art and culture. In addition to the renovated Museum building in which the antiquities collections will be displayed together with special exhibitions, the site will house a new Villa Scholars program organized by the Getty Research Institute, an analytical laboratory staffed by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), and a new training program dedicated to the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials co-organized by the GCI and UCLA. New facilities also have been built to house the expanded bookstore and cafe as well as educational programs and theatrical productions. The first chapter of this guide describes the history of the site and J Paul Getty's decision to house his growing collections in a structure based on an ancient Roman villa. The destruction of the Villa dei Papiri in AD 79 and its rediscovery in the eighteenth century are discussed in the second chapter. The third chapter takes readers on a tour of the Getty Villa and its gardens, from the new entry court and outdoor theater into the atrium and Museum galleries. Special rooms, such as the Basilica, the Hall of Colored Marbles, and the Temple of Herakles, are described in some detail before the tour continues in the gardens. The final chapter briefly describes the installation of the collections. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Attentive observation of art provides an excellent opportunity for better thinking, for the cultivation of the "art of intelligence." The arts are important in an educational setting, therefore, because they can cultivate important thinking strategies in children and adults alike. With carefully chosen illustrations, Perkins demonstrates how the reflective approach to art can develop broader, more adventurous, and clearer avenues of thought. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
