Publisher's cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. In the publisher's original red muslin with paper spine label. There's some fading to the cloth, most pronounced on the spine and at the edges, and some light chipping to the spine tips and to the edges of the paper label, just touching the final "I" in "ITALIANI." Some bibliographies call for a half-title which is not present here, but there is no sign of an excision or any other sophistication, suggesting that this copy is complete as originally bound. The Frederick W. Skiff/Estelle Doheny Copy, with their bookplates on the front pastedown. A very good copy [and uncommon thus] of this early Italian reader, preparerd while Longfellow was still a Professor of Languages at Bowdoin College in Maine. BAL 12049.…

Condition: Very good + condition. Road maps from the first British road atlas published, from London to Newcastle, with a county map of Nottinghamshire. At the very center of the county map "Sheerwood Forrest" (sic), haunt of Robin Hood, is depicted with a grove of trees. Copper engraved strip maps on both sides of each page, with three road strips per page. Includes Hartford, Grantham, Newark, Stamford, Burowbridge, North Allerton, Darlington, Durham, and Newcastle. Each map with finely engraved coat of arms, and compass rose. Below the maps and in the left and right margins, are details of the county: historical, topographical and statistical information. A great wealth of information is present on these wonderful 3 dimensional maps, including mileage markers, bridges, side roads, forests, mountains, manors, churches, rivers, streams, and ponds. Text in the right margin of plate 15 for example, describes the location of Belvoir Castle, seat of the Duke of Rutland, for whom Capability Brown would soon prepare a stunning landscape design. These are consecutive 10 pages, numbered 11 through 20, extracted from "Britannia Depicta". Oblong 8vo, (6 1/4 x 7 1/2"), bound in modern dark blue paper wrappers. OCLC: 54804304.…
