Hardback. Condition: Good. Eric Boman embarked on a career in fashion photography in the early 1970s, working for British Vogue, Harper's & Queen and The World of Interiors in London, and Marie Claire in Paris. Assignments or wanderlust took him to locations near and far, always with the same Leicaflex that he would train on whatever caught his eye. This body of personal work has remained unseen for over 45 years, stored away as 35mm slides. Most of the photographs are devoid of people, in contrast to Boman's professional work, which has almost always involved some form of portraiture. This book presents the photographs juxtaposed for the visual dialogue that emerges. A photograph of a glass merchant in Morocco faces a nearly identical one of a brass merchant in Tunisia; an image of a manicured Swedish topiary faces a lush rainforest around the corner from Boman's house; and a sculptural memorial to a fallen soldier in Denmark faces a desert island in the Caribbean. Beautifully designed in collaboration with renowned book designer Miko McGinty, this book is a tribute to the poetry of a well-travelled eye.…

Hardback. Condition: Fair. Clark Winter?s perceptive photographs of cars across the decades?and around the world?revel in nostalgia while revealing the subtleties of our relationship with automobiles, drivers and the things we see along the way. Since their invention, cars have been one of the driving forces behind America?s constantly changing culture. Not only have they helped shape the country?s sprawling cities and suburban society, but they?ve inspired films (from American Graffiti to The Fast and the Furious) and songs ( from the Beach Boys? zippy Fun, Fun, Fun to Bruce Springsteen?s anthemic Thunder Road ) and an endless parade of road-trip books. Over the course of half a century, Clark Winter captured images of the car as a symbol of Americana, yes, but more intriguingly, he also found a global spirit in this form of transportation in countries such as Spain, Italy and China. Winter?s photographs, made in both color and black-and white, are not simply focused on the vehicles but rather on the way people physically relate to cars, turning each image into a stage upon which a drama quietly (and sometimes comically) unfolds between owner, passenger, and passerby. And because these dramas are universal?eating ice cream in the backseat, waiting for a pump at the gas station, stuck in traffic, busted for speeding?Winter?s wide-eyed, often lighthearted pictures invite us to recall and relive our own days of adventure, romance and speed.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Like no other music of its era, Moby's oceanic, bluesy electronica has summed up the millennial turn's rootless melancholia, in massive worldwide hits like "Porcelain," "Natural Blues" and "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" His 1999 album Play sold over ten million copies and converted a whole generation to electronic dance music. With Destroyed, Moby has created a visual analogue to his gorgeous soundworld. The photographs in this volume record the sizeable portion of his life that is spent shuttling from plane to bus to venue to stage to party to hotel room to oblivion. "I hope that somehow in these pictures," Moby writes, "I'm able to convey the mundanity of touring, juxtaposed with those moments of the strange and/or sublime. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless airport, the next minute you're flying over the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless backstage area, the next minute you're on stage pouring your heart out to 75,000 people. Touring is all contrasts and strangeness, and that's what I'm trying to convey in these pictures." The 60 photographs in Moby: Destroyed accordingly veer from crowdedness to isolation, capturing the extremes of a life lived on the road. Also included is Moby's new album of the same name. Richard Hall, aka Moby, was born in Harlem, New York City, in 1965. Having studied classical guitar, piano and drums as a child, and after stints in various punk bands, he debuted in the early 1990s alongside Orbital, The Prodigy and Aphex Twin, as a representative of a new generation in electronica, emerging from Ambient House and Techno, and foreshadowing Trip Hop. Moby's bestselling 1999 album Play propelled him to worldwide fame; its successor, 18 (2002), earned gold and platinum awards in over 30 countries. Already famous for his veganism, Moby made his authorial debut in March 2010 as a contributor to Gristle: From Factory Farms to Food Safety, a collection of essays on the dangers of eating meat.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. What is more important--race or class--in determining the socioeconomic success of the blacks and whites born since the civil rights triumphs of the 1960s? When compared to whites, African Americans complete less formal schooling, work fewer hours at a lower rate of pay and are more likely to give birth to a child out of wedlock and to rely on welfare. Are these differences attributable to race per se, or are they the result of differences in socioeconomic background between the two groups?Being Black, Living in the Red demonstrates that many differences between blacks and whites stem not from race but from economic inequalities that have accumulated over the course of American history. Property ownership--as measured by net worth--reflects this legacy of economic oppression. The racial discrepancy in wealth holdings leads to advantages for whites in the form of better schools, more desirable residences, higher wages, and more opportunities to save, invest, and thereby further their economic advantages.Dalton Conley shows how factoring parental wealth into a reconceptualization of class can lead to a different future for race policy in the United States. As it currently stands, affirmative action programs primarily address racial diversity in schooling and work--areas that Conley contends generate paradoxical results with respect to racial equity. Instead he suggests an affirmative action policy that fosters minority property accumulation, thereby encouraging long-term wealth equity, or one that--while continuing to address schooling and work--is based on social class as defined by family wealth levels rather than on race.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Namsa Leuba: Crossed Looks is the first artist monograph featuring the work of Swiss-Guinean artist Namsa Leuba. This publication accompanies the first solo exhibition of Namsa Leuba in the United States, at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, South Carolina on August 27 ? December 11, 2021. Crossed Looks features Leuba?s major projects to date, including photography series in Guinea, South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, and the debut of a new series recently made in Tahiti. The exhibition and publication consider how Leuba?s photographic practice explores the representation of African identity and the cultural Other in the Western imagination. Over 90 photographs inspired by the visual culture and ceremonies of West Africa, contemporary fashion and design, and the history of photography and its colonizing gaze present Leuba?s unique perspective that straddles reality and fantasy. Through the adaptation of myths attributed to the Other, Leuba?s photographs acknowledge this double act of looking, a cross-dialogue of global cultures. The exhibition is supported by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and from Pro Helvetia. The publication features essays contributed by exhibition curator Joseph Gergel; writer and art critic Emmanuel Iduma; and art historian Dr. Mary Trent. These essays examine the nuanced themes of identity and representation in Leuba?s multiple bodies of work.…
