El dominio otomano comprendía casi toda la región de la Gran Llanura Húngara (excepto las partes noreste) y el Transdanubio meridional.El territorio había sido invadido y anexionado al Imperio otomano por el sultán Solimán el Magnífico entre 1521 y 1541. La parte noroeste del reino húngaro resistió la conquista y reconoció a los miembros de la Casa de Habsburgo como reyes de Hungría, pasando a ser conocida como «Hungría Real».
