Paperback. Condition: Good. Considered to be the best popular biography of Saint John Baptist de La Salle in English, this work incorporates modern research to complement the narratives of the original biographers to provide an illuminating background on the life and charism of the Founder of the Christian Schools and the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This biography sheds new light on the origins of enduring elements of the Lasallian charism--reliance upon Divine Providence and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, spirituality grounded in educational ministry, providing a human and Christian education for young people, especially the poor, application of innovative concepts in schools and other educational projects, and ministry of the laity in the Church. The title comes from a prayer often said by the saint, Domine, opus, tuum--"O Lord, the work is yours."Brother Luke Salm, FSC, (1921-2009) the first Brother to receive a doctoral degree in theology, was a renowned author and prominent lecturer. He authored a number of books and countless articles in his field of theology on the history of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and the Brothers, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, spirituality, and more. Brother Luke spent many years serving at Manhattan College, including as chairman of the theology/religious studies department from 1962-1970 and as director of the graduate theology program from 1970-1978. He served as a main presenter at Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies from 1986 to 2001. In the early 1990s, Brother Luke retired from teaching and spent his final years as archivist for the former New York District before his death on August 31, 2009.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In today's high-tech, fast-paced world, love is often portrayed as being separate from Church teaching. With his first encyclical, Pope Benedict XVI hopes to overturn that perception and describe the essential place of love in the life of the Church. The Holy Father explains the various dimensions of love, highlighting the distinctions between ?eros? and ?agape, ? Jesus as the incarnate love of God, and the scriptural law of love. In part two, he links the Church's charitable work with the love of God as Trinity, noting that the Church must express love through acts of justice and charity. This encyclical is an ideal reflection for religious and civic leaders, those preparing for marriage, and those engaged in justice and charitable work.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The perfect gift A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church's journey in years to come. - Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned, the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to recognize the traces of God's Spirit in events great and small. Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage.…
