Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The two previous editions of this guide showed the potential of the region for winter climbing. With improvements in ice tools the last decade has seen an explosion in mixed buttress routes, confirming the area as a major winter climbing venue. All the climbs have been done under true winter conditions, and speculative or incomplete ascents have been omitted. Descriptions are from a consensus of opinion where available. Pitch lengths are given where necessary, but on some of the easier sections only overall lengths are indicated. A star system of grading is included. For ease of use the guide has been divided into four sections: north, south, east and west. A few routes local to the area but not actually in the Lake District have been included as they are not covered by any other guide. Access description, descents, grid references, altitude and aspect of crags and also, where relevant, a note on conditions have been included. Where it is known, the date of the first ascent is given. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Southern Upland Way is Scotland's Coast-to-Coast walk and the longest of the National Trails north of the Border. It runs for 212 miles (341km) from picturesque Portpatrick on the west coast across the Galloway and Border Hills to finish on the east coast at Cockburnspath south of Dunbar. On the way it passes through remote and romantic country and visits many of the locations associated with Scotland's often turbulent past. The guidebook divides the walk into 13 stages of varying length that will fill a two-week walking holiday in this relatively unknown area of Britain. Possibilities for shorter walking holidays along the Way are also fully discussed. The walk is at times a somewhat strenuous one, but advice is given as to how all of the longer stages may be broken down into shorter more manageable sections. The guide is packed with information on the many places of interest passed en route and the historical connections are thoroughly discussed. All that is needed to turn the Southern Upland Way into a successful and enjoyable holiday experience is contained in this guide. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The aim in this series of books is to provide the mountainbiker and walker with information on an intended route so they know something of what to expect. One of the problems is that O.S. maps give no indication as to whether an 'other road' is metalled, a path or a forest fire break, or anything in between. Many bridges shown on O.S. maps do not exist. Rivers are difficult to judge in size from the map, and a building may be anything from a pile of stones to a maintained bothy. All is revealed without removing the sense of adventure and exploration. Gradient profiles help to assess how strenuous a route is, and each-hand drawn page contains a wealth of information. The object is to save wasted leisure time and enable the armchair explorer to plan ahead or relive experiences. The Glens of Ross-shire includes: Inverness to Shiel Bridge, Easter Ross, Wester Ross. Peter Koch Osborne is an experienced mountain walker who discovered a whole new world with the mountain bike. Now he continues both activities and devotes much of his spare time to exploring the Highlands of Scotland. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. After many years of negotiation a long-distance walk along rights of way and permissive paths has finally opened up England's most famous river from the Thames Barrier to the source - marked by a stone under a lonely ash tree in the fields above Cricklade, in Gloucestershire. Following the river, this 180-mile walk not only crosses some marvellous countryside but is virtually a pageant of history. It passes the Millennium Dome, Runnymede of Magna Carta fame, Windsor Castle and the Oxford colleges to name just a few. Because of the ease of access those who may not wish to do the entire walk can easily tackle sections for ideal days out. There are sketch maps of each stage of the path and descriptions of the sights en route and their historical or literary connections. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book presents a portrait of the Pennine Way, Britain's oldest and best known long-distance footpath, tracing its remarkable history through the experiences of walkers past and present. As Andrew McCloy walks the 268-mile route from the Derbyshire Peak District to the Scottish borders, he discovers how the Pennine Way set a benchmark for personal challenge and adventure and how reconnecting with wild places and the unhurried rhythm of the long walk continue to provide a much-needed antidote to our busy modern age. The resilience of the long distance walker is mirrored in the path's fascinating history: the initial struggle for access, battles to tame the bogs, later challenges of path erosion and the fluctuating circumstances of the rural hostel. Above all else however this is a book about Pennine Way people - from crusading ramblers to resourceful BandB landladies, hard working rangers to fanatical trail walkers. Their conversations and memories are woven into the narrative to give an account of the changing fortunes of the path and its special significance. Personal, thoughtful and often humorous, The Pennine Way - the Path, the People, the Journey is an exploration of our desire for challenge and adventure, the stimulation of wild places and how a long journey on foot through our own country still resonates today. It will appeal to people who have walked or are preparing to walk the Pennine Way, as well as to those with an interest in the history and legacy of this iconic path. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. To the impartial observer Britain does not appear to have any mountains. Yet the British invented the sport of mountain climbing and for two periods in history British climbers led the world in the pursuit of this beautiful and dangerous obsession. Unjustifiable Risk is the story of the social, economic and cultural conditions that gave rise to the sport, and the achievements and motives of the scientists and poets, parsons and anarchists, villains and judges, ascetics and drunks that have shaped its development over the past two hundred years. The history of climbing inevitably reflects the wider changes that have occurred in British society, including class, gender, nationalism and war, but the sport has also contributed to changing social attitudes to nature and beauty, heroism and death. Over the years, increasing wealth, leisure and mobility have gradually transformed climbing from an activity undertaken by an eccentric and privileged minority into a sub-division of the leisure and tourist industry, while competition, improved technology and information, and increasing specialisation have helped to create climbs of unimaginable difficulty at the leading edge of the sport. But while much has changed, even more has remained the same. Today's climbers would be instantly recognisable to their Victorian predecessors, with their desire to escape from the crowded complexity of urban society and willingness to take "unjustifiable" risk in pursuit of beauty, adventure and self-fulfilment. Unjustifiable Risk was shortlisted for the Boardman Tasker prize in 2011. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A guide offering practical advice on improving your outdoor photography. Photography and the outdoors could have been made for each other. This book has been produced for outdoor enthusiasts who want their photographs to do full justice to the quality of their outdoor experience. A central theme is that ?point and shoot is a state of mind'. It's not what camera you have but how you use it that really counts. And how you use it depends first on seeing, and on knowing what you want your pictures to convey. There is still a place for technique, and essential technical concepts are introduced and explained in the clearest possible language, and with a sense of humour. Throughout the book the emphasis is on practical advice, and on integrating photography with the rest of your outdoor life. There are chapters on landscape, action, and wildlife and close-ups. Text and illustrations are related specifically to climbing, cycling, caving, and many other outdoor activities. Particular advice is given for compact camera users. The book is illustrated with over 100 colour photographs, chosen both to illustrate learning points and to provide inspiration. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. More than twenty new walks are included in this 3rd edition, long regarded as the definitive guide to the island's routes. These include easy and beautiful coastal walks on the Arts headland and several tough new mountain routes which offer a challenge to the more experienced walker, such as the little known Es Puntals between Esporles and Banyalbufar. One new excursion in the north is a fascinating circular route into the area south of Tomir, past the old house of Ses Figueroles and returning by a newly restored footpath from Lluc to Caimari. Three different walks to the Penyals d'Honor are described, on the wooded plateau belonging to the Community of Bunyola, which can be reached by the mountain railway between Palma and Soller. In the Soller area two ascents of Balitx are given as well as the more familiar circuit, and an easy walk using traditional old paths from Soller up to the Mirador des Barques provides interest for the more moderate walker. Suggestions for a three-day walk from Andratx to Valldemossa have been included, which can be used in conjunction with that already described from Valldemossa to Pollensa. Another innovation is to include walks on the island of Dragonera, accessible by boat from either San Telmo or the Port of Andratx. Many other walks have been rewritten to take into account recent changes, including footpath diversions such as the one which diverts walkers away from the Cases de L'Odre above Soller, while some of the original walks have been dropped because of access problems. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Unlike most of the Cumbrian and Welsh peaks, the majority of these mountains do not have paths or walkers' tracks up them, but the many excellent stalker's paths takes one deep into wild territory and often gives a flying start to an ascent. Walkers in Torridon have to accustom themselves to free-ranging over heather, grass, rock and marsh. In the sketch maps, stalker's and the other paths are shown as broken lines, the recommended free-ranging routes are shown as dotted lines. Most of the expeditions assume that you have transport, and those which do not require it are indicated and are written as though Shieldaig is the starting point. The 'climbs' often involve descending again by the route of your ascent, which builds in a considerable safety factor if you are new to the area and also the comfort and pleasure of returning over now familiar territory. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Lakeland Fellranger walking guidebook covering 22 summits in the Mid-Western Fells of the Lake District, including a wide range of hills in the triangle between Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. The group centres on the two highest hills in England, the mighty Scafell Pike and Sca Fell with their many approaches. Each of the 22 fells has a dedicated chapter describing a plethora of walking routes of differing characters and difficulties (from wide bridleways up to easy scrambles), which can easily be combined to make ascents, descents, traverses or ridge routes. The chapter begins with a customised Harvey map that illustrates the routes, and shows ridge connections to neighbouring fells to assist in the planning of extended walks. In many instances pen and ink drawn diagrams show the routes from a given perspective to assist visualisation. The guidebook is fully illustrated throughout with clear elevation diagrams, detailed summit panoramas and lots of inspiring photographs. The Mid-Western Fells is part of the eight-volume Lakeland Fellranger series by Mark Richards. Together they provide a comprehensive guide to explore and enjoy the fells of the Lake District, with a selection of routes up more than 220 hills. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
