Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl record album, Epic BN 26339, near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket with one rubbed corner and some modest soiling to verso. Title song from the film of the same name, of course. The Scottswoman (who played an East End cockney in the movie) first hit it big with her 1964 cover of "Shout," when she was 16. Here she also offers "Day Tripper" and the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." (She was to marry Maurice Gibb in 1969, and in 1974 recorded the theme to the James Bond entry "Man With Golden Gun" -- a film of which it can at least be said "It was better than the book.") This LP Arranged by John Paul Jones; produced by Mickie Most. Maybe it's just us -- she was doubtless a lovely young woman, despite the problem with the incisors -- but the leering and slightly iridescent cover photo here -- credited to "Gersham" -- has always struck us as slightly creepy. "Formed by an eclectic group of musicians who had backgrounds in rock, pop, folk, blues, classical music and jazz, . . . Spirit had an eclectic musical style in keeping with the early days of progressive rock," and "seemed determine to out-eclecticize everybody else on the California psychedelic scene, with (their) melange of rock, jazz, blues, folk-rock, and even a bit of classical and Indian music," sayeth AllMusic. The earlier career of Drummer Ed Cassidy (born 1923, about 20 years older than his bandmates) was primarily in jazz including stints with Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk and Lee Konitz; he had served as the founding drummer of Rising Sons, an early blues rock vehicle for Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder. Early demo recordings by the band were produced by their Topanga Canyon roommate Barry Hansen, later known as the radio host Dr. Demento.
