Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Leone Leoni, a novel by George Sand. Reprint published in 1978 by Cassandra Editions of the Translation by George Burnham Ives. Hardcover format. This edition OP. The life of George Sand (Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin) reads like one of her romantic stories. This novelist, memoirist, literary critic and political commentator -- a true celebrity of her time -- led one of the most exquisitely romantic lives of any contemporary writer. This beautiful French woman knew many of the intellectual and artistic luminaries of her time; she had romantic affairs with Frederick Chopin, Jules Sandeau, Prosper Merimee, Alfred de Musset and several others; she maintained a close correspondence with Gustave Flaubert and actress Marie Dorvai. Where and when did she find the time - in between her socialist political writings, literary criticism, and whirlwind social life - to compose her many novels? But write them she did, and they were very popular. Perusing "Leone Leoni", one understands (even though it is a translation) the why of such popularity. A clear, but supple prose, enticing the reader with stories that beguile - Sand was no literary want-to-be. TITLE: Leone Leoni AUTHOR : George Sand (Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin, 1804 - 1876) TRANSLATOR : George Burnham Ives IMPRINT : Cassandra Editions PLACE : Chicago DATE : 1978 EDITION : Reprint of the 1900 ed. that had been published by G. First published in 1927. Trade Paperback. Olive Schreiner (1855 1920) was a South African author, anti-war campaigner and intellectual. She is best remembered today for her novel The Story of an African Farm which has been highly acclaimed since its first publication in 1883 for the bold manner in which it deals with some of the burning issues of the day, including agnosticism, existential independence, individualism, the professional aspirations of women, and the elemental nature of life on the colonial frontier. In more recent studies she has also been identified as an advocate for those sidelined by the forces of British Imperialism, such as the Afrikaners, and later other South African groups like Blacks, Jews and Indians to name but a few. Although she showed interest in socialism, pacifism, vegetarianism and feminism amongst other things, her true views escape restrictive categorisations. Her published works and other surviving writings promote implicit values like moderation, friendship and understanding amongst all peoples and avoid the pitfalls of political radicalism which she consciously eschewed. Although she may be called a lifelong freethinker, she continued to adhere to the spirit of the Christian Bible and developed a secular version of the worldview of her missionary parents, with mystical elements. "From Man to Man" (1926) was her next to last book. Reprint Edition (1977). First published in 1926.
