Cloth, 8vo, lxxviii, 192 pp, plates. From the introduction - "The nature and importance of Robert Browning's friendship with Katharine de Kay Bronson has been overlooked by almost all his biographers and critics. Although Mrs. Bronson's two published articles on Browning have been frequently quoted, she is known simply as Browning's American hostess in Venice, the friend to whom he dedicated his last book of poems. Writers who have been given access to Mrs. Bronson's papers have used them to fill in factual detail of the relatively uneventful last decade of Browning's life and have neglected their important biographical significance. In 1952 Betty Miller's stimulating but perverse Robert Browning: A Portrait acknowledged that Mrs. Bronson and her daughter were "the major emotional preoccupation" of Browning's final years, but since then no one has attempted to come to terms with the meaning of this remark. This book is intended to do just that. It publishes for the first time in their entirety all the known letters from Browning and his sister Sarianna to Mrs. Bronson. Mrs. Bronson's side of the correspondence is lost, and was almost certainly destroyed by Browning's daughter-in-law Fannie shortly after her husband's death, but one letter to Browning and eight to Sarianna survive and are printed in their appropriate places in the sequence, where they clearly show Mrs. Bronson's lively graphic style. Mrs. Bronson's articles, "Browning in Asolo" and "Browning in Venice," have been rescued from the magazines in which they first appeared and are reprinted as appendices, as are the unpublished memoirs about Browning in Venice by another American expatriate, D.S. Curtis." Good. …
