A doctor sidelined into the strange world of the first dot-com boom, he has come to Albany, New York, in between business in Iceland and home in Silicon Valley, to meet a woman he hasn?t seen in twenty years. Then a Chuck Taylorshod proto-Goth with chipped black nail polish, Kat is now a literary up-and-comer who needs Cedar to vet her memoiran account of the summer they were sweethearts. As if that weren?t enough, she?s written parts of it from his point of view. Through an intense weekend in a snowed-in motel room, Cedar and Kat relive their most painful memories: Before they had a chance at first love, Kat?s mother and her new fiancé dragged Kat off on a family trip. Kat returned with a secret, one whichwhen she shared it with Cedarset off a series of drastically miscalculated assumptions that dominoed into a moment of startling tragedy. Paperback. Condition: Good. "Rich with sensual detail, making for vivid impressions." -- Publishers Weekly Justine Hardy is an English journalist, a best-selling author, and a filmmaker who has spent much of the past fifteen years living in India. With her American debut, The Wonder House, Hardy has crafted an unforgettable love story set in the turbulent region of Kashmir, one of the most beautiful and broken places in the world. On Nagin Lake sits moored a houseboat called The Wonder House, on which Englishwoman, Gracie Singh, has been living out her widowhood since the death of her Indian husband. From The Wonder House Gracie has watched the valley become brutally disfigured by Pakistan and India's drawn-out clash over this coveted territory -- just as she has watched her best friend and landlord, Masood Abdullah, change from a jeans-wearing, flirtatious young man to an anxious father hemmed in by growing Islamic orthodoxy. Soon after Masood's nephew disappears to join an extremist militant group, Hal, a journalist from England, comes to interview Gracie, putting them all in grave danger. Told by and about a Western woman's immersion in the endlessly alluring and troubled Islamic culture of North India, Justine Hardy's gorgeous and gritty novel about human passions in a battered valley is a vital addition to the literature about India.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. World-famous as the Queen of Spas, Saratoga Springs entered a golden age in the Victorian years and the world flocked to its doorstep every summer. The rich and famous rubbed elbows with a growing post-Civil War middle class popularizing a new concept, the summer vacation. They came ostensibly to take the waters at the bubbling mineral springs, but what they really came for was to see and be seen on the grand piazzas of the magnificent, colossal hotels that lined Saratoga's Broadway, and to share in the limelight of glittering balls and fabulous parties. The grace and opulence of America's Victorian era faded with the dawn of the twentieth century, and almost all of the buildings and views in this book have long since disappeared in clouds of dust from the wrecker's ball or in spectacular cataclysmic infernos, but in Saratoga Lost, Robert Joki takes the reader on a guided tour of that grand era with hundreds of historic photographs from the author's extraordinary private collection, complemented, by period artwork.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Swamp Isthmus takes the stripped, lyric voice of Selenography, the first book of Wilkinson?s No Volta pentalogy, and confronts a pre-apocalyptic vision of American urban life. Here, the city and forest are one, as are the river and sewer. The ghost and the body are one, and the buildings and the trees, the sidewalks and the switchbacks all fuse. The poems in Swamp Isthmus create the flipside of the pastoral?the urban returns to the rural, their fates inseparable. In this broken, scattered world that still finds a way to be playful and imploring, there is no respite in the trees and streams and no turning back on nostalgia for either nature or the city. Though the second installment of the larger pentalogy, Swamp Isthmus stands alone, archiving and organizing, rehearsing words to hold in the mouth for just that moment.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. 2020 Best Book Awards Finalist - Young Adult2019 Maxy Awards Best Young AdultWith sophisticated prose, this gritty coming-of-age story blends the familiar and the unthinkable as the lead learns to use her voice. -Kirkus Reviews (Best Indie Books of 2019)Kit Kat was born in Athens, Greece. Her mother was a prostitute, and their protector was a pimp. After an early childhood marked by violence, homelessness, and time in an orphanage, a Greek-American woman adopted her and moved her to New York. Kit Kat was eight years old, with a new name, a new country, and a new mother who tried to silence her memories and experiences. She sought refuge in books, and after a failed suicide attempt at the age of thirteen, she discovered Charlotte Bront 's Jane Eyre. This book saved her life, and at fifteen, Kit Kat begins to write letters to Jane Eyre as a means of surviving a childhood she still remembers, the family she left behind, and the new mother that refuses to acknowledge her past.Kit Kat's letters to Jane Eyre demonstrate the resilience and power that she derives from Jane's own dark narrative and the parallels between their lives that include being neglected, unloved, poor, orphaned, and almost destroyed by the madwoman in their lives. This coming of age and semi-autobiographical novel is about family, loss, forgiveness, and the power of a good book.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Judith Roche's fourth collection of poems, All Fire All Water, consists of four parts. Rivers Have Memories, the first part, explores nature and our relationship to it. Poems include fish and birds, bees and wolves, storms and the changing of the seasons. Drawing from the Salish Sea, where Roche lives, the Pacific Ocean, and the northern Great Lakes, these poems are steeped in water. But there's plenty of the fire of passion in this collection as well. In A Bird Caught in the Throat, Roche turns to The Face of War and the horrors of unnecessary suffering; e.g., the blood for oil the 20th and 21st century have brought us. She writes of a usually well-intentioned friend from her liberal church who says she would torture those who are cruel to animals. In Hoffa she invokes a childhood memory of the unthinking pain adults can inflict on children, in this case, James Hoffa (the son, not his famous father) in the 11th grade. In The Husbands Sweet, a play on suite, she looks back from a great distance to a marriage both painful and beloved. These poems are in turn ironic, playful, rueful, and humorous, but still keep all of the sorrow intact. There are poems of other assignations after the bitter breakup of the marriage. The final section is We Are Stardust, the title taken from the Joni Mitchell song. These poems pose existential questions and explorations of identity and the possibilities of honest communication with others. Roche has a nonverbal, handicapped son and these poems are informed by some of the frustration of communication with him, other than that infused by profound love. She wonders if we can understand the nonverbal language of other creatures, especially crows, and the possibility of bridging the gaps between us and other sentient beings, including ancient beings. In Linear B and Linear A she tries to understand ancient Greece, the culture and the people, through what we know of their language. In Metaphors of Dust, she explores where we come from: As it turns out, we actually are stardust./ I thought it was a metaphor/ of life and space and time./ Apparently, our materials are 13 million years old./ We are star stuff pondering the story/ told in the life of the stars.Throughout this collection, the poems are infused with the music of the language in careful interplay of assonance and consonance.…
