Large structures such as factories, gymnasia, concert halls, bridges, towers, masts and chimneys can be detrimentally affected by vibrations. These vibrations can cause either serviceability problems, severely hampering the user's comfort, or safety problems. The aim of this book is to provide structural and civil engineers working in construction and environmental engineering with practical guidelines for counteracting vibration problems. Dynamic actions are considered from the following sources of vibration: - human body motions, - rotating, oscillating and impacting machines, - wind flow, - road traffic, railway traffic and construction work. The main section of the book presents tools that aid in decision-making and in deriving simple solutions to cases of frequently occurring 'normal' vibration problems. Complexer problems and more advanced solutions are also considered. In all cases these guidelines should enable the engineer to decide on appropriate solutions expeditiously. The appendices of the book contain fundamentals essential to the main chapters.

Neuware -This book provides an introduction to the modern theory of polynomials whose coefficients are linear bounded operators in a Banach space - operator polynomials. This theory has its roots and applications in partial differential equations, mechanics and linear systems, as well as in modern operator theory and linear algebra. Over the last decade, new advances have been made in the theory of operator polynomials based on the spectral approach. The author, along with other mathematicians, participated in this development, and many of the recent results are reflected in this monograph. It is a pleasure to acknowledge help given to me by many mathematicians. First I would like to thank my teacher and colleague, I. Gohberg, whose guidance has been invaluable. Throughout many years, I have worked wtih several mathematicians on the subject of operator polynomials, and, consequently, their ideas have influenced my view of the subject; these are I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, L. Lerer, C. V. M. van der Mee, P. Lancaster, K. Clancey, M. Tismenetsky, D. A. Herrero, and A. C. M. Ran. Over the last decade the theoryhas rapidly expanded and become enriched thanks to increasing researchactivity. Modern real option theory may be used for the valuation ofentire companies as well as for particular investment projects in thepresence of uncertainty. As such, the theory of real options can serveas a tool for more practically oriented decision making, providingmanagement with strategies maximizing its capital market value. This book is devoted to examining a new framework for classifying realoptions from a management and a valuation perspective, giving theadvantages and disadvantages of the real option approach. Impulsecontrol theory and the theory of optimal stopping combined withmethods of mathematical finance are used to construct arbitrarilycomplex real option models which can be solved numerically and whichyield optimal capital market strategies and values. Various examplesare given to demonstrate the potential of this framework. This work will benefit the financial community, companies, as well asacademics in mathematical finance by providing an important extensionof real option research from both a theoretical and practical point ofview.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 288 pp. Englisch.

It was a truly revolutionary step, because it required the abandonment of many old concepts and pre judices and the creation of new concepts and a new language called quantum mechanics, in order to understand and describe what happens within and between the atoms. A new subtle reality was discovered to exist in this realm, on which the ordinary reality of our daily life is based. The new insights were achieved not by any single individual, but by a small group from different nations, with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen as the most powerful leader . Most of these people were very young, in their twenties, whereas Bohr was in his forties at that time. It was a little group of enthu siastic young spirits, well aware of being at the front line of knowledge, of shedding light on a previously murky and contradictory situation. Never before have so few con tributed so much insight into the workings of nature in such a short time. One of the young men in this group was Werner Heisenberg. He was perhaps the most active and creative among them, the one who provided the most important ideas and formulations.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 212 pp. Englisch.

The concept of open set exploited since the twenties offered an expression of the geometric intuition of a 'realistic' place (spot, grain) of non-trivial extent.Imitating the behaviour of open sets and their relations led to a new approach to topology flourishing since the end of the fifties. It has proved to be beneficial in many respects. Neglecting points, only little information was lost, while deeper insights have been gained; moreover, many results previously dependent onchoice principles became constructive. The result is often a smoother, rather than a more entangled, theory. No monograph of this nature has appeared since Johnstone's celebrated Stone Spaces in 1983. The present book is intended as a bridge from that time to the present. Most of the material appears here in book form for the first time or is presented from new points of view. This collection contains all the published papers, with the exception of some short announcements that Whimey did not wish to be included. We also include the introduction to his book Geometric Integration Theory, and one previously unpublished manuscript on the four-color problem. The papers are presented under some broad categories: graphs and combinatorics, differentiable functions and singularities, analytic spaces, manifolds, bundles and characteristic classes, topology and algebraic topology, geometric integration theory. Whimey intended to write an introduction to this collection. Unfortunately he left us no manuscript at the time of his death, May 10, 1989. We had discussed the possibility of using his paper 'Moscow 1935 - Topology moving toward America,' written for the Centennial of the American Mathematical Society, as part of his introduction to this collection, an idea which he much liked. We therefore include this paper. which contains personal information as well as mathematical reflections. as Whimey's own introduction to these volumes. Whimey's mathematical style, like his personal style. was that of an explorer and pioneer. Ooe of the pictures included in these volumes shows him as a mountain climber. In mathematics. he preferred to work on undeveloped areas: break new ground and build foundations. During the last twenty years of his life he concentrated his efforts on developing an educational system that builds on the natural tendency in children to be explorers.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 620 pp. Englisch.

No other question has ever moved so profoundly the spirit of man; no other idea has so fruitfully stimulated his intellect; yet no other concept stands in greater need of clarification than that of the infinite. . . - David Hilbert (1862-1943) Infinity is a fathomless gulf, There is a story attributed to David Hilbert, the preeminent mathe into which all things matician whose quotation appears above. A man walked into a vanish. hotel late one night and asked for a room. 'Sorry, we don't have o Marcus Aurelius (121- 180), Roman Emperor any more vacancies,' replied the owner, 'but let's see, perhaps and philosopher I can find you a room after alL' Leaving his desk, the owner reluctantly awakened his guests and asked them to change their rooms: the occupant of room #1 would move to room #2, the occupant of room #2 would move to room #3, and so on until each occupant had moved one room over. To the utter astonish ment of our latecomer, room #1 suddenly became vacated, and he happily moved in and settled down for the night. But a numbing thought kept him from sleep: How could it be that by merely moving the occupants from one room to another, the first room had become vacated (Remember, all of the rooms were occupied when he arrived.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 300 pp. Englisch.

Why: a workshop on trees Two main reasons motivated this workshop. First, the current plethora of tree representations in branching processes which has be come obvious by the Minneapolis IMA Congress Classica] and Modern Branching Processes in 1994. But this would not have been sufficient to organize an 'n-th' congress on branching processes. Secondly, regular discussions with researchers in algebra and computing sciences at the University of Versailles and at INRIA (lnstitut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) convinced us it would be fruitful to offer the workers in these different fields the opportunity to exchange their points of view on the subject. The organizers being probabilists, a large part of the meeting (two sessions) was devoted t~ probability theor:y (not only branching processes). Nevertheless, the other three sessions focused on algorithms, on ultrametric and combinatorial aspects of trees and on disordered systems. Most papers in this volume are both of high level and of pedagogical interest. They are intended for a large public, including graduate students looking for an initiation to tree structures. The papers have been grouped into four sections: - disordered systems, - probability and trees, - large deviations, - ultrametric and algebraic aspects of trees. Some of the speakers are, unfortunately, not represented in this volume.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 172 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This volume is an outgrowth of the 1995 Summer School on Theoretical Physics of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP), held in Banff, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies, from July 30 to August 12,1995. The chapters, based on lectures given at the School, are designed to be tutorial in nature, and many include exercises to assist the learning process. Most lecturers gave three or four fifty-minute lectures aimed at relative novices in the field. More emphasis is therefore placed on pedagogy and establishing comprehension than on erudition and superior scholarship. Of course, new and exciting results are presented in applications of Clifford algebras, but in a coherent and user-friendly way to the nonspecialist. The subject area of the volume is Clifford algebra and its applications. Through the geometric language of the Clifford-algebra approach, many concepts in physics are clarified, united, and extended in new and sometimes surprising directions. In particular, the approach eliminates the formal gaps that traditionally separate clas sical, quantum, and relativistic physics. It thereby makes the study of physics more efficient and the research more penetrating, and it suggests resolutions to a major physics problem of the twentieth century, namely how to unite quantum theory and gravity. The term 'geometric algebra' was used by Clifford himself, and David Hestenes has suggested its use in order to emphasize its wide applicability, and b& cause the developments by Clifford were themselves based heavily on previous work by Grassmann, Hamilton, Rodrigues, Gauss, and others.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 540 pp. Englisch.

In 1982 Tsfasman, Vladut and Zink, using algebraic geometry and ideas of Goppa, constructed a seqeunce of codes that exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The result was considered sensational. Furthermore, it was surprising to see these unrelated areas of mathematics collaborating. The aim of this course is to give an introduction to coding theory and to sketch the ideas of algebraic geometry that led to the new result. Finally, a number of applications of these methods of algebraic geometry to coding theory are given. Since this is a new area, there are presently no references where one can find a more extensive treatment of all the material. However, both for algebraic geometry and for coding theory excellent textbooks are available. The combination ofthe two subjects can only be found in a number ofsurvey papers. A book by C. Moreno with a complete treatment of this area is in preparation. We hope that these notes will stimulate further research and collaboration of algebraic geometers and coding theorists. It was the first essen tially multidimensional representation in which the integration takes place over the whole boundary of the domain. This integral representation has a universal 1 kernel (not depending on the form of the domain), like the Cauchy kernel in e . However, in en when n 1, the Bochner-Martinelli kernel is harmonic, but not holomorphic. For a long time, this circumstance prevented the wide application of the Bochner-Martinelli integral in multidimensional complex analysis. Martinelli and Bochner used their representation to prove the theorem of Hartogs (Osgood Brown) on removability of compact singularities of holomorphic functions in en when n 1. In the 1950's and 1960's, only isolated works appeared that studied the boundary behavior of Bochner-Martinelli (type) integrals by analogy with Cauchy (type) integrals. This study was based on the Bochner-Martinelli integral being the sum of a double-layer potential and the tangential derivative of a single-layer potential. Therefore the Bochner-Martinelli integral has a jump that agrees with the integrand, but it behaves like the Cauchy integral under approach to the boundary, that is, somewhat worse than the double-layer potential. Thus, the Bochner-Martinelli integral combines properties of the Cauchy integral and the double-layer potential. 324 pp. Englisch.

This book contains the proceedings of a conference held from August 29 to September 2, 1988, at the University of Copenhagen, about 'the orbit method in representation theory.' It contains ten articles, most of which are original research papers, by well-known mathematicians in the field, and it reflects the fact that the orbit method plays an important role in the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups, solvable Lie groups, and even more general Lie groups, and also in the theory of enveloping algebras. 244 pp. Englisch.

The workshop was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation (USA) and the Department of Industry, Science and Technology (Australia) under the US-Australia agreement. Control and Chaos-it brings back memories of the endless reruns of 'Get Smart' where the good guys worked for Control and the bad guys were associated with Chaos. In keeping with current events, Control and Chaos are no longer adversaries but are now working together. In fact, bringing together workers in the two areas was the focus of the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to bring together experts in dynamical systems theory and control theory, and applications workers in both fields, to focus on the problem of controlling nonlinear and potentially chaotic systems using limited control effort. This involves finding and using orbits in nonlinear systems which can take a system from one region of state space to other regions where we wish to stabilize the system. Control is used to generate useful chaotic trajectories where they do not exist, and to identify and take advantage of useful ones where they do exist. A controller must be able to nudge a system into a proper chaotic orbit and know when to come off that orbit. Also, it must be able to identify regions of state space where feedback control will be effective. 348 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -It is fashionable in professional circles to deplore the difficulty of intellectual discourse between 'academicians' - men of letters, researchers, rationalist- and 'practitioners' - surgeons, radiologists, physical therapists. How benefi cial it would be if educated non-academicians could speak intelligently about t-tests and chi-square tests and men of academia could appreciate the travail, spirit, and needs of a busy office and practice! Even this suspected gap between 'two cultures' came very near together in the wonderful town of Groningen (The Netherlands) as wise men from both practice and scholarship gathered to talk about the unfathomables of the temporomandibular joint. There were keen discussions about the intense bio logical changes which occur about the complex temporomandibular joint after excessive use or injury. These papers were followed by talks outlining the experiences of those involved in the imaging and non-surgical and surgical management of patients who were enduring such changes. The pitch and interchange of opinions and evidence as to why a disc or its position could effect little or profound disturbance of the temporomandibular apparatus were en lightening to each who listened - and thought. And even more sobering was to hear the report of a well-documented, multiple decades long study of a large number of patients with osteoarthrosis and internal derangement which defined a natural course and eventual end of the disease. With this understanding, one is now faced with the obvious question of how much treatment patients with osteoarthrosis really require. 256 pp. Englisch.

KlingmUller Lehrstuhl fUr Genetik, Universitat Bayreuth, UniversitatsstraBe 30, 8580 Bayreuth, FRG th th On September 6 and 7 1983 the second workshop on 'Azospirillum: Genetics, Physiology, Ecology' took place at the University of Bayreuth, west Germany, organized by the genetics department. There were about 50 participants, who came from German research institutions, from other European countries, from Israel, Egypt and North and South America. The first such workshop had taken place two years ago in Bayreuth too, hence the organizers could draw on the experiences then obtained. Azospirilla have, during the past ten years, found an ever increasing scientific interest, because first, these soil bacte ria carry the genetic information for binding molecular nitrogen from the air, and second, they live in close vicinity to the roots of several grain crops and forage grasses. By exploitation of these two properties, it is hoped to develop inoculation pro cedures that result in yield increases in agriculture, in par ticular in soils poor in nitrogen. The reports on the first afternoon focussed, as a result of the Bayreuth research interest, on the genetic basis and the regulation of nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum. Here, mainly by application of most modern gene technological approaches, considerable progress in the understanding of the situation has been made, and was documented in the corresponding reports. 196 pp. Englisch.

Werner Kaufmann we organized the international symposium on 'VASODEPRESSOR HORMONES IN HYPERTENSION - PROSTAGLANDINS AND KININS' held in Nuremberg (FRG) as an official satellite symposium to the Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension 1986. This supplement brings together the most interesting papers presented at this symposium. In the past there were hundreds of publications in both fields, the prostaglandins and the kallikrein-kinins and there were a lot of information indic~ting that these two systems influence each other strongly. But it is not at all clear till today which role these two systems play in physiological or even pathophysio logical regulation of systemic blood pressure. So it was aim of this symposium to bring the scientists of these two fields together to discuss blood pressure regulation in respect of the prostaglandin and kallikrein-kinin system. The authors of the presented papers provided new findings, an overview of their own work, and their hypotheses in this field. We would like to thank the contributors for their excellent papers and scientific discussion. We pay particular credit to the Birkhauser Verlag AG, Basel, Switzerland, for their kind cooperation, and express particular thanks to Mrs Renate Wiesmann and Mrs Renate Cawello for writing the manuscripts.
