Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Hermann Günther Graßmann was one of the 19th century¿s most remarkable scientists, but many aspects of his life have remained in the dark. This book assembles essential, first-hand information on the Graßmann family. It sheds light on the family¿s struggle for scientific knowledge, progress and education. It puts a face on the protagonists of an exciting development in the history of science. And it highlights the peculiar set of influences which led Hermann Graßmann to brilliant insights in mathematics, philology and physics. This book of sources is meant to complement the biography of Graßmann and the proceedings of the 2009 Graßmann Bicentennial Conference (Birkhäuser 2010). 'Roots and Traces' will interest all scholars working on Hermann Graßmann and related topics. It offers newly discovered pictures of family members, historical texts documenting life in this exceptional family and an English translation of these previously unpublished papers.Text in German and English.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 272 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This is an introductory book on the general theory of relativity based partly on lectures given to students of M.Sc. Physics at my university. The book is divided into three parts. The rst part is a preliminary course on general relativity with minimum preparation. The second part builds the ma- ematical background and the third part deals with topics where mathematics developed in the second part is needed. The rst chapter gives a general background and introduction. This is f- lowed by an introduction to curvature through Gauss¿ Theorema Egregium. This theorem expresses the curvature of a two-dimensional surface in terms of intrinsic quantitiesrelatedtothein nitesimaldistancefunctiononthesurface.Thestudent isintroducedtothemetrictensor,Christo elsymbolsandRiemanncurvaturet- sor by elementary methods in the familiar and visualizable case of two dimensions. This early introduction to geometric quantities equips a student to learn simpler topics in general relativity like the Newtonian limit, red shift, the Schwarzschild solution, precession of the perihelion and bending of light in a gravitational eld. Part II (chapters 5 to 10) is an introduction to Riemannian geometry as - quired by general relativity. This is done from the beginning, starting with vectors and tensors. I believe that students of physics grasp physical concepts better if they are not shaky about the mathematics involved.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 372 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book is intended for the Mathematical Olympiad students who wish to prepare for the study of inequalities, a topic now of frequent use at various levels of mathematical competitions. In this volume we present both classic inequalities and the more useful inequalities for confronting and solving optimization problems. An important part of this book deals with geometric inequalities and this fact makes a big difference with respect to most of the books that deal with this topic in the mathematical olympiad. The book has been organized in four chapters which have each of them a different character. Chapter 1 is dedicated to present basic inequalities. Most of them are numerical inequalities generally lacking any geometric meaning. However, where it is possible to provide a geometric interpretation, we include it as we go along. We emphasize the importance of some of these inequalities, such as the inequality between the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean, the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, the rearrangementinequality, the Jensen inequality, the Muirhead theorem, among others. For all these, besides giving the proof, we present several examples that show how to use them in mathematical olympiad problems. We also emphasize how the substitution strategy is used to deduce several inequalities.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 220 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Over the last decade, spin glass theory has turned from a fascinating part of t- oretical physics to a ourishing and rapidly growing subject of probability theory as well. These developments have been triggered to a large part by the mathem- ical understanding gained on the fascinating and previously mysterious ¿Parisi solution¿ of the Sherrington¿Kirkpatrick mean eld model of spin glasses, due to the work of Guerra, Talagrand, and others. At the same time, new aspects and applications of the methods developed there have come up. The presentvolumecollects a number of reviewsaswellas shorterarticlesby lecturers at a summer school on spin glasses that was held in July 2007 in Paris. These articles range from pedagogical introductions to state of the art papers, covering the latest developments. In their whole, they give a nice overview on the current state of the eld from the mathematical side. The review by Bovier and Kurkova gives a concise introduction to mean eld models, starting with the Curie¿Weiss model and moving over the Random Energymodels up to the Parisisolutionof the Sherrington¿Kirkpatrikmodel. Ben Arous and Kuptsov present a more recent view and disordered systems through the so-called local energy statistics. They emphasize that there are many ways to look at Hamiltonians of disordered systems that make appear the Random Energy model (or independent random variables) as a universal mechanism for describing certain rare events. An important tool in the analysis of spin glasses are correlation identities.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 292 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This volume includes several invited lectures given at the International Workshop 'Analysis, Partial Differential Equations and Applications', held at the Mathematical Department of Sapienza University of Rome, on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Vladimir G. Maz'ya, a renowned mathematician and one of the main experts in the field of pure and applied analysis. The book aims at spreading the seminal ideas of Maz'ya to a larger audience in faculties of sciences and engineering. In fact, all articles were inspired by previous works of Maz'ya in several frameworks, including classical and contemporary problems connected with boundary and initial value problems for elliptic, hyperbolic and parabolic operators, Schrödinger-type equations, mathematical theory of elasticity, potential theory, capacity, singular integral operators, p-Laplacians, functional analysis, and approximation theory.Maz'ya is author of more than 450 papers and 20 books. In his long career he obtained many astonishing and frequently cited results in the theory of harmonic potentials on non-smooth domains, potential and capacity theories, spaces of functions with bounded variation, maximum principle for higher-order elliptic equations, Sobolev multipliers, approximate approximations, etc. The topics included in this volume will be particularly useful to all researchers who are interested in achieving a deeper understanding of the large expertise of Vladimir Maz'ya.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 356 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the last decades, the monitoring and modelling of various geodynamic processes have gained ever increasing importance. In particular, temporal variations of the deformation and gravity fields recorded by new types of geodetic measuring techniques and reflecting isostatic, tectonic or volcanic processes in the earth's interior as well as climatologically induced changes on its surface have opened new avenues. The present volume succeeds a similar topical volume published in 2007 and reflects the most recent developments in these fields of research.Part of the papers in this book were presented at the second workshop on 'Deformation and Gravity Change: Indicators of Isostasy, Tectonics, Volcanism and Climate Change' that took place at the Casa de los Volcanes on Lanzarote, Spain, during March 27-30, 2007. It was jointly organized and supported by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and the Cabildo Insular de Lanzarote. The workshop also served as the second meeting of the members of the IAG Working Group ICCT2 on 'Dynamic Theories of Deformation and Gravity Fields'. 362 pp. Englisch.

Thefocus ofthis bookisonthe interface of algebraic geometry with analytic number theory, with the basic aim being to highlight the ro le that analytic number theory has to play in the study of D- phantine equations. Broadly speaking, analytic number theory can be characterised as a subject concerned with counting interesting objects. Thus, in the setting of Diophantine geometry, analytic number theory is especially suited to questions concerning the distribution of integral and rational points on algebraic varieties. Determining the arithmetic of a ne varieties, both qualitatively and quantitatively, is much more complicated than for projective varieties. Given the breadth of the domain and the inherent di culties involved, this book is therefore dedicated to an exp- ration of the projective setting.
