Add to basketCloth, small 8vo, xvi, 17-244 pp, 30 plates, ills. From the blurb : "The reader of this book is invited to take part in a real adventure of detection. Instead of looking for the misprint on page 33 and the other minutiae of the first-edition collector, he is sent on a quest for the true reason for a book's existence. Solid though the print may appear to be, the investigator quickly finds that nothing is certain in the history of any individual book. Being the product of many different hands - writers, publishers, paper-makers, printers, binders, etc. - books have been the victim of the most remarkable accidents, closely connected with the political, religious, or social history of their times. Words are twisted, passages withdrawn or altered, illustrations wrongly attributed, authors' and publishers names concealed, bindings transferred, and paper and print subjected to a hundred curious turns. Mr. Collison closely examines the possible reasons for these accidents and suggests a method for each stage of the investigation. He shows how book-collecting can be a fascinating pursuit - and by no means an expensive one - that grows more rewarding as skill is acquired in a hobby calling on all the knowledge that can be accumulated in a lifetime. Fully illustrated." Bookplate of Roy A. Gillespie on front pastedown endpaper, an ex-library copy with a large library blindstamp on the rear board, number on the spine, tape-marks on the endpapers, stamps and accession marks on the prelims and stamps on the plates, covers slightly rubbed and spine slightly faded.…

Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, xv, 359 pp, plates, ills (some colour). From the blurb: "The seven volumes of The Fleuron - A Journal of Typography were published between 1923 and 1930. They celebrated, but also largely contrived, the typographic renaissance of their time. Oliver Simon was the begetter of The Fleuron and the editor of the first four volumes - aided editorially by Stanley Morison, while Harold Curwen provided the opportunity and the printing skills. In 1925 Oliver Simon and Harold Curwen, pressed by other duties, happily transferred The Fleuron to Stanley Morison as editor and to the Cambridge University Press as printer-publisher. The seven volumes, totalling 1350 pages, are now virtually impossible to come by. Since the influence and interest of their contents have been in no way diminished by the passage of time or by the new technical devices of 'occasional' printing, a wide selection of the most significant Fleuron articles, profusely illustrated, is now published in a single volume: The Fleuron Anthology. By a happy chance Francis Meynell and Herbert Simon, two men who were associated with the original Fleuron venture and are known also for their own typographic achievements, have been available to edit this significant and handsome volume, adding their 'Retrospectus'. The illustrations to the chosen articles, a major feature of The Fleuron, are reproduced in their original size." Contents: English Printing Before The Fleuron: A Retrospectus; Printers' Flowers and Arabesques, by Frances Meynell and Stanley Morison; Claud Lovat Fraser: Illustrator, by Holbrook Jackson; Initial Letters in the Printed Book, by Percy J. D. Smith; The Title-Page, by Oliver Simon; Emil Rudolf Weiss, by Julius Meier-Graefe; On the Planning of Printing, by D. B. Updike; Emery Walker, by Bernard H. Newdigate; Mr. C. H. St. John Hornby's Ashendene Press, by Bernard H. Newdigate; Stanley Morison, by Frank Sidgwick; the Nonage of 19th Century Printing in England, by Holbrook Jackson; D. B. Updike and The Merrymount Press, by W. A. Dwiggins; Modern Styles in Music Printing in England, by Hubert J. Foss; Typographical Work of Percy Smith, by Frank Sidgwick; On the Work of Bruce Rogers, by Frederic Warde; Karl Klingspor, by Julius Rodenberg (Translated by Anna Simons); 'Garamond' Types: XVI & XVn Century Sources Considered, by Paul Beaujon; The Work of Rudolf Koch, by Albert Windisch; Geofroy Tory, by A. F. Johnson; On Decorative Printing in America, by Paul Beaujon; Eric Gill: Sculptor of Letters, by Paul Beaujon; An Unacknowledged Movement in Fine Printing, by A.J. A.
