Paperback. Condition: Good. A timeless mystical classic. Beloved by Christian women. A beautiful gift. How deeply we who love the Lord of Love, and desire to follow him, long for the power to surmount all difficulties and tests and conflicts in life in the same exultant and triumphant way. To learn the secret of victorious living has been the heart's desire of those in every generation who love the Lord. - Hannah HurnardHinds' Feet on High Places is an allegory of the Christian life, much like The Pilgrim's Progress. The protagonist is not however a Mr. Greatheart, rather she is Much-Afraid. We begin with her in the village of Much-Trembling in the Valley of Humiliation, surrounded by her relatives The Fearings. She is a servant of the Chief Shepherd, whom she deeply desires to please, and she seems to be happy filling her mind with verses from the Song of Songs. Secretly, she feels defeated by life; her mouth is crooked, deforming her face and her speech, and she is crippled, able only to limp and stumble through life. Finally, her relatives all hate the Chief Shepherd, and are about to force her to marry Craven Fear whom she despises. Her dream is to have feet like a hind's that will carry her gracefully to the High Places, far from the Valley of Humiliation and into the Kingdom of Love. The book is an extended meditation on the victorious life, and on the Song of Songs. It is far from sentimental. Although it is an allegory, its protagonist, Much-Afraid, is a very real character, because she is partly based on Hannah Hurnard. This realism fully engages the reader, and is one of the reasons that Hind's Feet on High Places has powerfully moved so many.Hannah Hurnard was born in 1905 in Colchester, England, to Quaker parents. She suffered many phobias and, in addition, had a stutter. Growing up she did not feel the presence of God in any way, but rather found the Bible and all things religious intensely boring. At the age of nineteen, all that dramatically changed, and she felt that God was asking her to serve him with her stuttering mouth. She developed a love of the Bible, went to Bible College, and then to Haifa, Israel as a missionary. She became a successful writer. Hind's Feet on High Places is her most famous book.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. According to persistent rumours, the Australian government suppressed the book because its untold story of a slice of colonial history was an embarrassment to the British Empire. Opens a window on the Boer War, politics of the empire, and the life of enlisted soldiers of the time. George Witton's Scapegoats of the Empire was published in 1907; however, only seven copies of the book survived. According to persistent rumours, the Australian government suppressed the book because its untold story of a slice of colonial history was an embarrassment to the British Empire. George Witton wrote the book to show that he, Breaker Morant and Handcock, who fought in the second Boer war as members of the Bushveldt Carbineers regiment of the British army were scapegoated by the British authorities in South Africa. They were court-martialled for the war crime of summarily executing twelve Boer prisoners of war, which they admitted. However, they claimed that they were obeying the unwritten, but widely-known take no prisoners policy of Lord Kitchener. Both Morant and Handcock were executed by firing squad in February 1902, allegedly to appease the Boer government in order to facilitate the peace Treaty of Vereeniging signed in May 1902, which ended the Second Boer War.George Witton served twenty-eight months in prison, after which he returned to Australia, and wrote this gripping account.George Ramsdale Witton (28 June 1874 - 14 August 1942) was a lieutenant in the Bushveldt Carbineers in the Boer War in South Africa.Harry Breaker Morant (9 December 1864 - 27 February 1902), a larger-than-life character, is a major figure in the book. He was born to parents who ran a British workhouse but passed himself off as well-educated and a member of the British upper class, creating romantic legends about his past. He went to Australia for the colonial experience and was variously a drover, a horseman, a bush poet and balladeer, a petty criminal and a military officer. Morant and Handcock have become folk heroes in modern Australia. Their court-martial and death have been the subject of books, a stage play, and an award-winning Australian New Wave movie by director Bruce Beresford, depicting them as Australian icons and martyrs.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Dark Laughter (1925) is a novel by Sherwood Anderson. Inspired by his own decision to abandon his family and career in order to establish himself as a professional writer, Anderson explores the guilts, routines, desires, and disappointments driving the lives of many Americans in the early-twentieth century. Although he is known today for his story collection Winesburg, Ohio, a pioneering work of Modernist fiction admired for its plainspoken language and psychological detail, Anderson's Dark Laughter was his only bestseller. Inspired by the stream of consciousness style of James Joyce's Ulysses, Anderson produced a novel that remains controversial for its depictions of race, class, and sexuality. >Bruce Dudley stood near a window that was covered with flecks of paint and through which could be faintly seen, first a pile of empty boxes, then a more or less littered factory yard running down to a steep bluff, and beyond the brown waters of the Ohio River. Bruce, a factory worker in Old Harbor, Indiana, is your average working man. He lives a simple life, keeps a low profile, spends his money at the bar with his friends, and tries not to get fired. As far as anyone knows, there is nothing special about him whatsoever; he is a drifter who found his way to Old Harbor by chance and settled down to make himself some money. But Bruce was born in Old Harbor; raised on its streets and educated in its schools, he lived most of his life by another name: John Stockton, Indiana native turned Chicago reporter. Married with kids, he was happy as far as anyone could tell. Up until the day he left, he was still John Stockton, but the change that came over him late in life was too great to resist. He needed a new name, a new life. He wanted to start over in the place where he began. When an opportunity comes to work as a gardener for the factory owner's wife, Bruce soon finds it impossible to resist her brazen advances. Dark Laughter is a tale of guilt, identity, and shame from master storyteller Sherwood Anderson. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.…
