Add to basketCondition: Gut. 189 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding slightly bumped, otherwise very good condition / Einband leicht bestoßen, sonst sehr guter Zustand. - The author sees a tendency in modern criticism for critical theory and critical practice to be out of step; while much critical theory is too far divorced from practice, practical criticism is often divorced from the rigorous application of critical thought and precise language. A strong conviction that good criticism grows from a sympathetic application of rigorous and logical thought to actual texts has led the author to try to redress the imbalance in much modem criticism. Starting with an analysis of modern critical theories of the comic, the book attempts to reconcile opposing views of the comic in an original synthesis that helps to explain the varieties of the comic and the vexed question of the relationship of the comic to comedy. Having differentiated between various types of comedy the author discusses the fundamental types with reference to an example of each taken from the great period of English comedy from 1590 to the closing of the theatres in 1642. The two kinds of satiric comedy are illustrated and contrasted in Jonson's The Alchemist and Thomas Middleton's A Mad World, My Masters. These are contrasted with the two fundamental types of benevolent comedy illustrated in Dekker's Shoemakers' Holiday and Brome's A Jovial Crew. Dekker's collaborations with Middleton are discussed to highlight the essential difference in comic stance between the two playwrights. Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is used to illustrate an ambivalent 'neutral' kind of comedy characteristic of its author. In discussing these particular plays the author relates the text, where necessary, to the intellectual milieu of its own day, but the object throughout is not to treat the plays as museum pieces, but as living examples of the successful exploitation of comic principles in dramatic literature. Add to basketCondition: Gut. 218 p. Leicht vergilbt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / Slightly yellowed, otherwise in very good condition. - Literary criticism has recently become the scene of intense controversy. Marxism, feminism, hermeneutics, deconstructionism and the many varieties of structuralism all claim to offer us new insights into literature, and fierce denunciations of older schools abound. In this book eight distinguished critics Wayne Booth, John Holloway, Gabriel Josipovici, Laurence Lerner, Robert Pattison, Roger Scruton, Anthony Thorlby and Cedric Watts respond to the present situation. All are interested in the new movements, though they differ among themselves on the value of structuralism and the merits of many of its practitioners. What unites them is a refusal to abandon their trust in reason, the possibility of meaning, and the need for value judgements. From this basis the ideas of prominent figures, particularly Barthes and Genette, are re-examined; specific essays discuss the application of modern critical techniques to the works of major authors, including Sophocles, Proust, Trollope and Kafka. The result is a lively and humane book which offers insights into both literary theory and particular works. It takes the new schools of criticism seriously and asks what they can offer, but is not afraid to disagree with them, sometimes fundamentally. Its constant concern is to offer serious discussion, and to avoid polarized simplifications. Add to basketSoftcover. Condition: Gut. Second Edition. 240 p. Einband etwas berieben, Schnitt stellenweise leicht angeschmutzt, insgesamt vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Binding somewhat rubbed, book cut partially slightly soiled, overall yellowed, otherwise in good condition. - For the new edition of this well-established guide the editors and contributors have fully updated the text and bibliography, and have added two important new chapters. These cover reading and interpretation - hermeneutics, phenomenology, reception theory - and feminist literary theory. Literary theory is a fast-moving field, and much has happened since publication of the first edition to necessitate both revision and expansion. Theory itself has become firmly established as a subject of study in its own right; new schools of theory have come into prominence; and the process whereby literary theories borrow from and fertilise each other has continued to accelerate - thus vindicating the editors' original emphasis on crossreference and comparison. The new additions and revisions will ensure that Modern Literary Theory holds its place as one of the most comprehensive and helpful textbooks available on the subject.
