Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Like it or not, the Cross is the uncomfortable, scandalous symbol of Christianity. There is just no way of avoiding it. No other religion professes its faith with the image of a capital punishment. It was a gruesome form of torture and death in the ancient Roman Empire, and yet women and men wear this symbol on chains around their necks, on commitment rings or badges; they sign themselves with a Cross before prayers and even sports people are seen making this sign before an event. In his years of teaching and writing, Tony Kelly has continuously explored they 'why' of this symbol. Apart from the historical, political reasons that led to Jesus' death in this brutal way, why this form of death; where was God on Golgotha; what was the purpose or meaning of this death; could it have been avoided? These are just some of the questions raised on the cross of Jesus. Such questions were first asked by Jesus' friends and followers who seem to have had such high expectation of him. But these 'had hopes' (Lk 24:21) were shattered on Golgotha. The shock of his death was compounded by the further shock of his return to them - they named their experience as resurrection - a word only associated with the 'last days'. Death was one thing. Resurrection compounded the questions. As Jews, these friends and followers puzzled their experience in the light of their Jewish scriptures and traditions. First Paul, then the Gospel writers, and then John, the visionary, mined their scriptures and theology to find ways to communicate the inexpressible. From the Foreword by Mary Coloe, PBVM Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Sixty years ago the Second Vatican Council inaugurated what would be a sea change in the way Christians prayer, not only in the Catholic communion, but across Western Christianity. The intervening decades have seen some steps forward, some sticking points, and new challenges to common prayer. In this issue of the Australian Journal of Liturgy, Jenny O'Brien addresses one of those sticking points, the place of women in liturgical ministry. Joseph Grayland addresses the intersection of Christian liturgy and the climate crisis in conversation with Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'. On the practical side, Nathan Nettleton reflects on several years of "online only" services in his own congregation, while Bryan Cones addresses presiding informed by the post-conciliar recovery of the assembly as the primary actor in the liturgy. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1957, Ella Simon of Purfleet mission near Taree, New South Wales, applied for and was granted a certificate of exemption. Exemption gave her legal freedoms denied to other Indigenous Australians at that time: she could travel freely, open a bank account, and live and work where she wanted. In the eyes of the law she became a non-Aboriginal, but in return she could not associate with other Aboriginal people - even her own family or community. It 'stank in my nostrils' - Ella Simon 1978.These personal and often painful histories uncovered in archives, family stories and lived experiences reveal new perspectives on exemption. Black, White and Exempt describes the resourcefulness of those who sought exemption to obtain freedom from hardship and oppressive regulation of their lives as Aboriginal Australians. It celebrates their resilience and explores how they negotiated exemption to protect their families and increase opportunities for them. The book also charts exemptees who struggled to advance Aboriginal rights, resist state control and abolish the exemption system. Contributions by Lucinda Aberdeen, Katherine Ellinghaus, Ashlen Francisco, Jessica Horton, Karen Hughes, Jennifer Jones, Beth Marsden, John Maynard, Kella Robinson, Leonie Stevens and Judi Wickes. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This volume of essays examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. From the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) on 11 February 2013, through to the election of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio SJ) on March 13 these essays come from a number of writers, theologians and poets. It is a contribution to what will be an ongoing assessment of the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, an examination of the days of the 2013 conclave and gives some background to the Argentinian, Jesuit of many years standing, Pope Francis. "Ave Atque Vale"-Hail and Farewell-is how the Roman poet Catullus ends his elegiac tribute to his deceased brother and has always been used to mark an end and a beginning. Whether it was 600 or 900 years since a pope resigned, the action is unprecedented in the modern papacy. What led Benedict XVI to resign is a matter of pure speculation, and the confirmation of what motivated the action really relies on one source-Joseph Ratzinger. Was it exhaustion and the effects of his advanced age?Was it the recognition that his vision and practice, far from helping the church, actually contributed to the chaos the church now finds herself in at an administrative level? Only one person can give that answer. With the election of Jorge Maria Bergoglio SJ to the See of Peter, the script has changed and new sets of players, promising to kick towards different goalposts, are now coming into place. There are rising expectations that, inevitably, will have to be qualified by experience. A new style can lead in many directions. The new pope is no heavyweight theologian. He is an intelligent pastor. He knows things are not working. But what will he do? At 76, and with some health issues, Pope Francis cannot be expected to be in office for a long time. He may follow Benedict's precedent and the customary habit in the Jesuits of six-year terms for leaders. Whatever his tenure, it is bound to be an experience of a very different pope to the last two.The volume of essays is edited by Michael Kelly SJ and includes contributions by Andrew McGowan, Constant Mews, Andrew Hamilton SJ, Joel Hodge, Brian Lucas, Michael Mullins, Neil Ormerod, James McEvoy, and Philip Harvey, as well as poets Barry Gittins, Brian Doyle, Anne Hunt, Anne Elvey, Rachael Kohn BA Breen. Most of the pieces first appeared in Eureka Street in February and March 2013. Examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. For many decades, Veronica Brady has been a gadfly to political and ecclesiastical princes and their entourages. For those parched for relief from straitening patterns of thinking and self-absorbed myopia she has been a refreshing breeze, bringing hope to the heart and vision to the imagination. This book brings together a selection of her addresses that dare to suggest that there is a mystery beckoning us into something new, that is not satisfied with the way things are and that dares to believe that novels and poetry bear witness to this ministry. She calls this mystery God, not with any confident triumphalism but as an other (who speaks through others) that subverts such a corrosive vice seeping through contemporary society. For her, God leads to other places, even to that which is not God. So from Marcus Clarke to Judith Wright, from Primo Levi to Kim Scott, she drinks in the refreshment of new possibilities which sacred texts have often lost under a pall of imperial conventionality. She discovers in these early and contemporary writers a way into the potential of The God Shaped Hole, where is found the call and narrative of the necessity of remembrance, of balm for suffering, and pathway hints into a respect for Aboriginal Australians and the land of their identity. A selection of Veronica Brady's addresses that dare to suggest that there is a mystery beckoning us into something new, that is not satisfied with the way things are, and that dares to believe that novels and poetry bear witness to this ministry. In order to mark the bicentenary of the foundational dream that Saint John Bosco experienced when only nine years of age (1824), this book offers readers reflections on a number of biblical and theological themes that emerge from the simplicity yet depth of that dream. In the first place, certain elements from the life and person of Jesus are presented as the model for a so-called Salesian' spirituality and life-style. Those elements are outlined as an awareness that Jesus never abandons his fragile disciples, and that a genuinely Christian education writes on the hearts of the young. They are never abandoned in the challenging all-pervasive secularity of contemporary society. It closes with a summons to a deeper awareness of the universal possibility of 'the perfection of love' as Saint Francis de Sales (15671622) taught, well before his fellow Savoyard, John Bosco (18151888). Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Celebrating 750 years! This is a collection of studies on Thomas Aquinas theology. EXPLORING THOMAS AQUINAS. ESSAYS AND SERMONS has essays by Marie-Dominique Chenu, Yves Congar, Jean-Pierre Torrell, Josaphat Pinto de Oliveira, and Walter Principe; these are followed by three sermons by Chenu, Edward Schillebeeckx, and Karl Rahner. These writings have been assembled and translated by Thomas OMeara, O.P, who taught at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana for many years . The essays consider what was new in Aquinas thinking in the thirteenth century, his view of Islam, his theology of the church, the influence of his theology just before, during, and after Vatican II, and a pioneering study of his theology as a spirituality. Here theologians from recent years look at central themes so that this thinking from the past might illumine contemporary problems, questions, and ways of thinking. 2023 marked 700 years since Aquinas' canonization, 2024 marks the 750th anniversary of his death, and 2025 the 800th anniversary of his birth. The essays and sermons in this volume present interpreters of Aquinas in the twentieth century who are transmitting and applying his insights. Will more highly evolved superintelligence render todays human race extinct? Is this generation morally obligated to give birth to a tomorrow in which we outdated humans can no longer participate? This book collects foresighted analyses and recommendations from computer scientists, neuroscientists, AI ethicists, along with Christian and Muslim theologians. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the 1970s the run-down inner-city suburb of Redfern was a gathering place for Aboriginal intellectuals and ambitious young radicals. Having fled poverty and segregation in rural Australia in the 1950s and 60s, they set about fulfilling their vision a new way of living, where Aboriginal people could control their own lives politically, economically and culturally.Redfern: Aboriginal activism in the 1970s is the previously untold story of how they set about fulfilling their dreams. In a fast-paced burst of creativity and hard work, in just three years an Aboriginal health service, a housing cooperative, a legal service, a child care centre and a black theatre in Redfern were established. They had some support, and the promise of self-determination under the newly elected Whitlam's Labor government, but there was also abuse and discrimination. This is the story of how, with hard work, humour and vision, they prevailed to build organisations that have served as models for similar organisations all over Australia.'A timely and overdue study of one of the most exciting time periods in Aboriginal political history.' - Professor John Maynard'The 1960s gave protest a voice. By the early 70s, the Aboriginal voice had become very loud near the heart of Sydney, in Redfern. It was thrilling. I knew at the time that something important was happening, but until reading Johanna Perheentupa's Redfern, I didn't know how important.' - Bryan Brown, actor Redfern: Aboriginal activism in the 1970s 'A timely and overdue study of one of the most exciting time periods in Aboriginal political history.' -Professor John Maynard Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

These passages depict God or humans destroying or devaluing parts of creation. What if we dare to read these 'grey texts' from the perspective of the victims - Earth and the domains of Earth? How then would we relate to these de-valued parts of creation? And, how does this Gospel contribute to resolving this dilemma? Norm Habel has taught Old Tesatment in Australia, the USA and India. He has written major commentaries on the Book of Job and is editor of the Sheffield Press' Earth Bible Series. The Bible is an inconvenient text. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara offers a unique perspective on the life and making of this Aboriginal Western Arnhem clever man or marrkidjbu.Born at the end of the 19th Century when the Western world had scarcely touched Arnhem Land, Paddy Compass Namadbara acted as a healer for his countrymen and became a powerful and revered leader. Using his clever abilities and wisdom to nurture his community, he enabled the community to deal with the cultural and social changes of the encroaching Western world. He achieved the reputation of being one of the most powerful and clever of traditional marrkidjbu described as 'a proper number one champion!'Based on stories told by the people he helped, some profoundly and in extraordinary ways. This unique biography looks at his life through the eyes of his Western Arnhem countrymen who witnessed his extraordinary abilities. Ian White, researcher and compiler for Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara, encourages readers to give greater consideration to the reality of the extraordinary abilities of clever people such as Paddy Compass.'Ian White's book offers a unique historical glimpse into an Aboriginal world on the cusp of change due to European incursion; it reveals an authentic insight into the special relationship of the 'clever man' with his Dreaming spirits and his process of initiation into the special knowledge of a marrkidjbu. White compiled his generalised account of 'Old Paddy', aka Paddy Compass Namadbara, from a number of West Arnhem people for whom Old Paddy had been a major figure in their lives. Recording various accounts, White's extraordinary work shows Old Paddy's special talent for healing the sick, exercising wisdom, and having visions in which he foresaw future events, for which he offered guidance and strategies for dealing with Western encroachment. Old Paddy's visions of the future foretold major events that were astonishing in the 1950s: Aborigines would get paid for their work, would own land and cars, and that money issues would bring division. All of his predictions came true. A rare insight into the world of the Dreaming, this book is unique and essential reading.' - Susan Greenwood, University of Sussex'Forty years since the passing of Paddy Compass Namadbara, his legacy still looms large amongst the people of western Arnhem Land. Ian White has dedicated decades to recording the story of Namadbara's life and here he presents an extraordinary biography as told by the people of this region of the Northern Territory. The anecdotes about Namadbara's exceptional powers as a 'clever man' portray him as a community leader, teacher, sage, mystic, counsellor and healer. These are however more than just marvellous stories that defy explanation and evoke our wonder. The events of Namadbara's life, described by so many witnesses from both sides of the cultural divide, and collated so respectfully in this book, are an ongoing challenge to how various fields of the social and cognitive sciences should deal with such matters.' - Dr Murray Garde OAM, ANU Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara offers a unique perspective on the life and making of this Aboriginal Western Arnhem clever man or marrkidjbu. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. By the late 1960s, Indigenous education in Australia was in crisis. When Whitlam swept to power in 1972, his Labor government reached out to Indigenous people to guide change at a national level. The National Aboriginal Education Committee was the result. This comprehensive history by Leanne Holt traces the journey of the committee and its members from its inception in the mid 1970s to its completion in 1989.In Talking Strong, Holt introduces us to the radical men and women, from all walks of life, who served on the committee. Women like May O'Brien, one of the Stolen Generation, who fought the odds to become the first Aboriginal teacher in Western Australia. Men like charismatic Stephen Bamba, a musician, diesel mechanic and teacher from Broome, who at just 27 became the committee's chair. The committee travelled all over Australia and listening to teachers and communities tell their stories, they met with and challenged politicians. They believed that an education in harmony with their own cultural values and identity was the best means for Indigenous people to achieve self-determination, and they forever influenced the participation, retention and success of Indigenous people at all levels of education in Australia. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book began when the author realised that, when people said they were fascinated by particular biblical passages, they were usually ones that presented dramatic encounters between people and between God and people. Such are the passages interpreted in this book. They usually set a vivid scene that heightens the dramatic nature of the encounter, and animated dialogue often directly addresses the reader. There is also animated action that is vividly striking and often sudden and unexpected. These features involve the readers themselves and may question them about what they expect. Indeed the dramatic encounters provocatively lead to unexpected new life in the future. Maurice Andrew is a New Zealander who has studied and taught Old Testament Studies in Germany, Nigeria and New Zealand, often in classes composed of people of different genders, ethnicities and churches. Encounters with these people, which have led to new dimensions in the author's life, have possibly influenced his interest in encounters in the Bible. He has written articles and books on Old Testament themes usually with reference the bi- and multicultural context of New Zealand. This book began when the author realised that, when people said they were fascinated by particular biblical passages, they were usually ones that presented dramatic encounters between people and between God and people. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What do the colon and the question mark in the title signify? Does the colon denote relatedness or separation? What is the effect of the question mark? Does the interrogative question the future of Karl Barths approach to theology, make a claim for Barth as a postmodern theologian, or challenge the notion of postmodern theology altogether? These papers pose sharply the question of how the name Karl Barth and the term postmodern relate, or, more pointedly, how or whether theology as understood and practised by Barth and self-declared postmodern theology have anything to do with each other at all. from the epilogue by Wes Campbell Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In this book, first published in 1988, Nolan believes that in South Africa 'the practice of the struggle is in the practice of faith', and to show this he reviews the central theme of the Christian faith as found in the Old Testament and the preaching of Jesus, the nature of sin and salvation, and of God's action in the world. He also faces the dilemma of Christians who can no longer support the apartheid state that existed at the time he wrote the book. This is a book of contextual theology, a theology rooted in the painful conversion of a Church to the cause of liberation. It is a conversation between Christians, but also a conversation that comes with a challenge to discover the meaning of the Gospel, to find God, in their salvation. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The essays in this volume examine various aspects of Dominican life. There are essays on prayer, spirituality, historical and biblical pieces as well as a piece on the work on the work of publishing by Dominicans. The contributors come from different parts of the world and reflect different vocations within the Order. The overarching theme in the volume is that the Dominican tradition is one of dynamic engagement, a dynamic engagement with the world, with issues, ideas, concepts, topics, biblical studies, theology, philosophy, social analysis and history in whatever activity is undertaken. It is a process, never static but always searching and calling for new ideas, new expressions, new ways to look at, to respond to the situation/s in front of us, and also importantly to make some response to the needs of the time as they confront us. It is the following of an intuition, a thought an insight, to see where it leads, to look at the context/s, all the twists of possible interpretations, understandings and to come to certain decisions in how to frame this and talk about it. At the same time it is then not just a study of a certain topic (theological or otherwise), issue, idea, event, institution not just an investigation for its own sake, but to take another next step. It is a handing on, a transmitting, a passing on to others what has been learnt, discovered, engaged with, grappled with, teased out, developed, and what is added to a body of knowledge, a tradition. It is what has been described by some as the Salamanca Process. It is prophetic not as in 'foretelling the future', but a standing back, looking at situations, topics, themes, events, institutions, people, actions, ideas and situations and to try to detail, outline, define, and attempt to interpret what is being witnessed, described and experienced. It is dynamic in so far it adds to a body of knowledge, ideas, interpretations and is always open to new analyses and to reinterpretation. Once again this dynamic process is not unique to just the Dominican tradition, as others could claim it, or do the same thing without naming it. Nor has it always been undertaken perfectly, or to its best, by all those who are part of the tradition (indeed there are times in history where it has been undertaken better than in others), but it is perhaps that 'something', that those who follow the tradition can stand back, recognise it, recognise that 'something', the elements and say 'yes, that is the Dominican 'way'. The great issues of our day emphasise that we are all in this together: startling inequalities, pressures on the environment, continuing hunger and poverty, climate change, economic integration, mass migrations, instant communications and recurring armed conflicts. How do we ensure that these vast developments work for the 'common good', promote greater social equity and better life opportunities, especially for the most disadvantaged? In this issue of Interface, scholars from the Yarra Institute for Religion and Social Policy within Melbourne's University of Divinity tackle key aspects of globalisation. How do we ensure that these vast developments work for the 'common good', promote greater social equity and better life opportunities, especially for the most disadvantaged? Through the struggles of Indigenous Australians for recognitionand self-determination it has become common sense tounderstand Australia as made up of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and things. But in what ways is the Indigenous on-Indigenous distinction being used and understood? In The Difference Identity Makes, thirteen Indigenous and non-Indigenousacademics examine how this distinction structures the work ofcultural production and how Indigenous producers and their worksare recognised and valued. The editors introduce this innovative collection of essays with a path-finding argument that 'Indigenous cultural capital' nowchallenges all Australians to re-position themselves within arevised scale of values. Each chapter looks at one of five fields of Australian cultural production: sport, television, heritage, visual arts and music, revealing that in each the Indigenous on-Indigenous distinction has effects that are specific. This brings new depth and richness to our understanding of what'Indigeneity' can mean in contemporary Australia. In demonstratingthe variety of ways that 'the Indigenous' is made visible and valuedthe essays provide a powerful alternative to the 'deficit' theme thathas continued to haunt the representation of Indigeneity.
