Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Exhibition Prosthetics by Joseph Grigely explores the artist's use of language and images as a means of representation that further the reach of the real. Grigely uses the term 'exhibition prosthetics' to describe an array of these conventions, particularly (but not exclusively) in relation to exhibition practices. Exhibition Prosthetics is the first in the Bedford Press Editions series of artist's books edited by Zak Kyes. The series will engage with publications as a primary medium of practice, enabling artists to explore the inherent constraints and possibilities of the printed document. The impact on Japanese cities of social and technological change is the focus of this collection of essays by Akira Suzuki, editor of Telescope magazine and Professor of Design at Kobe University. Entertaining, but equally thought-provoking, the essays describe urban rituals and catastrophes, and suggest lessons that might be learnt from them. Progressing in scale from the minimal dwelling space for the single urbanite to the dispersed urban infrastructure, they put forward a new conception of urbanism that takes account of the changes in information technology that have begun to render national boundaries meaningless.

Created as part of the 2008 tenth anniversary celebrations of the Design Research Laboratory, the AA DRL TEN Pavilion is one of those built projects that push the conventions in architecture and structural engineering as well as the building materials industry. From Mies van der Rohe's 1929 Barcelona Pavilion to the Serpentine Gallery's annual summer pavilions designed by architects such as Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas, the production of pavilions has been at the forefront of architectural experimentation. Because of their temporary nature and loose functional requirements, pavilions can be realised as a pure expression of the way in which building materials are manufactured, organised, managed and assembled. People might not automatically categorise pavilions as great works of architecture, but they have nonetheless provided a vital platform for challenging current practice and making it evolve into the future. Created as part of the 2008 tenth anniversary celebrations of the Design Research Laboratory, the AA DRL TEN Pavilion is one of those built projects that push the conventions in architecture and structural engineering as well as the building materials industry. A fullscale construction built by a group of students as part of their academic activities, the pavilion was conceived as a way of bringing together digital explorations in architectural design with state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and advanced structural calculations based on non-linear stress analysis. This book, edited by Yusuke Obuchi and Alan Dempsey, recounts the story of the creation of the DRL TEN Pavilion and through it illustrates the design, development and assembly processes involved as well as the structure's place within the evolving teaching methodologies of the DRL as a whole.

Accompanying the school's end-of-year show, the book features hundreds of drawings, models, installations, photographs and other materials documenting the world's most international and experimental school of architecture. The work of the AA's 600+ full-time students ranges from small-scale studies and drawings to large 1:1 working prototypes, interactive media and built installations, including the annual AA summer pavilion in Bedford Square. The book also includes selected projects originating from the AA's Hooke Park campus in Dorset and our Research Cluster initiatives as well as from the immensely diverse design workshops and public events associated with the AA's global Visiting School, undertaken in more than a dozen cities since its launch in early 2008. Complementing these projects, this book also offers a snapshot of the AA's vibrant public programme of lectures and exhibitions and its equally pioneering catalogue of publications and other printed media.

This instalment in the "Architecture Words" series collects together for the first time a number of key essays by the New York-based architect and critic Mark Rakatansky. Following its title, the book is broken down into three sections: Tectonic, Acts, Desires and Doubts. In each, Rakatansky covers a series of subjects, from Louis Kahn's relationship to the brick to a more general polemic involving identity and politics in contemporary architecture, and in a writerly voice that varies from the third-person narrative of the scholarly essay to the transcript of an email exchange with fellow academic Sarah Whiting, discussing two recent books by architect Greg Lynn.

In Never Never Lands Unknown Fields chronicle the creation stories of the city and head off on a dust-blown road trip across Australia, into the vast and mysterious interior of this remote island continent in search of its ancient tribal hinterlands and its immense techno-landscapes. Here, in the Never Never, are the resource territories of the city, a land of rich geology, endless horizons and mining pits so large that they generate their own weather systems. For this book, Unknown Fields travel 1km beneath the surface of the earth to find gold and to survey and laser-scan the technological incisions that release it from the ground. These massive excavations are cut through the narrative landscape of the Dreamtime, the creation mythology of the Aboriginal Australians. Stories from two indigenous authors act as our Dreamtime guide as we drift across the grounds of traditional creation, before diving deep to follow a new subterranean songline, one created from underground mine computer models and laser survey data. Roughly 0.034 grams of this landscape is locked away in each of our mobile phones, charged and quietly vibrating. We all carry a little piece of Australia in our pockets. For Snowing in the Supercomputer Unknown Fields locate the environmental forecasts and data landscapes of the city and travel to Alaska's far north, to visit a territory that sits in the collective imagination as one of the last remaining wildernesses. Unknown Fields spend the winter solstice with climate scientists from around the world who are camped out in the most northern cities on the planet to collect data that is fed into the climate-modelling supercomputers and environmental policies further south. Traditional data visualisations and guilt-laden headlines may no longer be sufficient strategies to encourage the cultural shift now required. In this book Unknown Fields peers inside the supercomputer to find a set of surreal landscapes that sit between tradition and technology, the real and the imagined, the present and the future. They are landscapes given new narratives by native Alaskan authors and generated from the climate data and modelling software of supercomputer scientists. Against these images run panoramas of the supercomputer infrastructure that simulates them and the doomsday statistics that are shouted at us everyday, but that we do our best to ignore. For A World Adrift Unknown Fields travel through Asia and beyond, tracing the shadows of the world's desires along the supply chains and cargo routes of the South China Sea to explore the dispersed choreographies and atomised geographies that the globalised city brings into being. This book is a collection of conversations and images from Unknown Fields' journey. From sea to source, we follow the routes of bits, bobs and thingamajigs in reverse and chart their unmaking, from container ship back through wholesalers and manufacturers and ending at the banks of the sludge-filled radioactive lake in Inner Mongolia where most of our technologies begin their lives. The resulting critical positions and observations are as diverse as the magazines from which they originate, and range from the oldest student-edited journal (Perspecta) to a research collective that at the time of writing was on the cusp of being launched ([bracket]). Also included are contributions from the editors of 306090, AA Files, Actar, An Architektur, Footprint, Grey Room, Harvard Design Magazine, Hunch, Interstices, Log, Manifold, Mark, New Geographies, OASE, Praxis, Scapes, UME and Volume. 20/20 is a timely publication that provides today's architectural reader with concise viewpoints from the editors behind the magazines behind architectural culture. 20/20: Editorial Takes on Architectural Discourse brings together editors from 20 leading contemporary architectural magazines to discuss the role editors play in shaping architectural discourse. Previously published in a variety of different venues, from journals to anthologies - including such noted books as Lars Spuybroek's NOX: Machining Architecture and FOA's Phylogenesis - they are now assembled for the first time in this volume. For almost 20 years, Detlef Mertins has been a critical voice in renewing our understanding of architectural modernity. Architect, historian, professor, his essays have often taken up familiar themes in order to redress inaccuracies and release energies that we were unaware of. To commemorate the life and work of Dennis Sharp (19332010), Sharp Words collates together a variety of essays that touch upon each of his architectural fascinations among them, glass architecture, picture palaces, masters of concrete and English modernism. Punctuating these texts are a number of editorials from his days as editor of AAQ, which graphically as much as intellectually offer emblems of his time at the AA.
