Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Mifflinburg and the towns of the West End have a story to tell. The hard work of making a life in early America demanded courage and determination of its settlers. There were good times when the towns thrived and tough times when efforts failed. Fires and accidents destroyed dreams, and financial distress halted progress, but the towns survived, and those that did celebrated their successes with fairs, parades, bands, and church dinners. Mifflinburg's buggy factories shipped buggies and sleighs across the young nation. The timber industry of the West End produced thousands of board feet, which built towns and propped up mines. Images of America: Mifflinburg and the West End tells the unfolding stories of Mifflinburg and the West End towns of Swengel, Millmont, Laurel Park, Pardee, Glen Iron, Weikert, Hartleton, and Laurelton. It is a history full of surprises and wonderful spirit.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -When Fannin County was created on January 21, 1854, less than 20 years had passed since the Cherokee removal and the Texas Revolution. The forced removal of the native Cherokee opened north Georgia to increased settlement by people of European background. War hero James Walker Fannin was born, if legend is correct, near where Tennessee and North Carolina border Georgia. After dropping out of West Point, Fannin was a successful broker in Columbus, Georgia, and then immigrated to Texas. Following several military adventures, including a failed attempt to relieve the Alamo, Colonel Fannin was defeated at the Battle of Coleto Creek, and his command was massacred near Goliad. Shortly after the Mexican-American War joined Texas to the Union, Georgia honored Fannin's memory by naming Fannin County for him. From an isolated region of mountain farms, gristmills, and wilderness, Fannin County has developed alongside the arrival of the railroad and the inauguration of logging, hydroelectric power, mining, and manufacturing and is currently one of the premier tourist destinations and arts-and-crafts regions in the Southeast.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -New York's mountainous Adirondack region, once considered foreboding and impassable, has evolved during the last three centuries into a desirable place for people to live and visit. Native Americans, trappers, hunters, and anglers first arrived to tap the wilderness resources offered by the Adirondack Mountains. Lumbermen, miners, and tannery workers settled the back woodlands to harvest the logs, dig the minerals, and collect the hemlock bark. Others came to clear trees and farm the land, and settlements soon dotted the landscape. The travelling public found the healthy, pure air and the beautiful mountains with miles of waterways a welcomed alternative to the hot, smoky cities. The tourist industry grew and flourished with hotels, cabins, cottages, summer homes, and wealthy estates spreading throughout the six million acres of Adirondack Park. Communities also continued to thrive as visitors found the area impossible to leave. Adirondack People and Places celebrates this mountainous country where the wilderness truly became a place for people.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Mount Tamalpais rose from the land that has become Marin County. As the crown jewel of the Marin Municipal Water District, the mountain and adjoining watersheds total 22,000 acres. These properties sit adjacent to county open space as well as holdings of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mount Tamalpais State Park. Together, the land provides an unparalleled world-class recreation and wilderness area only 30 minutes from the city of San Francisco. Amidst the upheaval of the Progressive Era, the Water District was chartered in 1912 by citizens of Marin County to create a public water system and to fulfill the promise of a park. Rich with possibility, the land had remained surprisingly undeveloped throughout the 19th century. Surviving the Gold Rush, a notorious period of wanton greed for natural resources, the mountain needed protection. Armed with the power of eminent domain, the Water District started the conversion of the vast watershed areas from private to community ownership, a process that ultimately saved the mountain and left in its formidable shadow the beloved and beautifully preserved natural land of the Mount Tamalpais Watershed.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, two of America's most revered symbols of freedom, date back to the British rule of the American colonies. The main structure of Independence Hall was completed in 1732, and the final casting of the Liberty Bell was completed in 1753. Visited by over two million people yearly, these historic icons have been used as backdrops for many political and social demonstrations and speeches. Filled with images from the archives of Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia Department of Records, and collections from around the country, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell illustrates how these two historic relics generate a sense of pride and patriotism set forth by the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Mahopac's first known colonial settlement was founded near the large lake bearing the Algonquian name 'Macookpack' around 1740. During the American Revolution, the area served as an important logistical center and supply depot for the American cause. Following the war, the hamlet developed into an agricultural breadbasket, supplying goods and produce--especially dairy items--region-wide. By the mid-19th century, Mahopac, particularly its grand lake, became a resort destination with many large hotels and boardinghouses. Arrival of the railroad to Mahopac in 1872 further supported tourism in the lakeside resorts as travelers from New York City could now reach Lake Mahopac within a few hours. Drawing from the archives of the Carmel Historical Society, Putnam County Historian's Office, and the collections of the authors and others, Mahopac depicts daily life during the community's bygone eras.'Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Tuolumne City traces its history back to the historic Gold Rush of the mid-19th century. Founded in 1854, the town--first named Summersville, then changed to Carters in the 1880s before finally becoming Tuolumne in 1906--played host to one of the most prominent gold- and quartz-mining outposts in the region. When many of the more profitable camps along Turnback Creek and Tuolumne River began to wane, the industry of choice for Tuolumne shifted to timber, which would drive the town and shape its character for the greater part of the 20th century. The West Side Lumber Company harvested huge, lucrative stands of virgin pine, fir, and cedar, reaching deep into the forest alongside treacherous 40-degree to 60-degree curves and along a unique narrow gauge track. Tuolumne's lumber-rich past is celebrated to this day with the annual Lumber Jubilee.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Since its beginnings in the 1850s, Eugene has attracted independent thinkers. Its early leaders sited the town in a picturesque location along the Willamette River and were confident that agriculture and timber businesses would guide its growth. As Eugene transformed from a settlement to a city, its citizens took an active voice in the creation of its identity, like advocating for a main railroad line to run through town and determining how the commercial district would branch out from the central downtown core. Today, the population continues to express strong and diverse feelings about politics, personal rights, and the environment as it shares the common experience of living and working in a place of great natural beauty.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The southernmost county in Maryland, Somerset was established in 1666 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, and named in honor of his wife's sister, Lady Mary Somerset. The county originally included the area of what today is the adjacent counties of Worcester and Wicomico as well as a portion of southern Delaware. Throughout the years, some of its most prominent citizens, including Declaration of Independence signer Samuel Chase and Civil War-era Union supporters John Crisfield and Anna Ella Carroll, helped shape the nation. Somerset County includes photographs--some never before seen--that take readers from the expansion of the railroad in the 1800s, which led to a boom in the seafood and agricultural industries; to the early days of institutions, such as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; to the founding of long-standing celebrations, including Olde Princess Anne Days, the Deal Island Skipjack Races, and the National Hard Crab Derby.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Donaldsonville is a jewel in the crown of Louisiana history. Around 1750, from a small trading post at the fork of the Mississippi River and Bayou Lafourche, the Tchitimacha Indians witnessed the arrival of the French, English, German, Spanish, Jewish, Italian, and Irish settlers. Sugar cane plantations and African slaves came shortly after their arrival. The city has played host to Jean Lafitte, Fort Butler, Rebel forces, Union troops, oyster boats, the first black mayor in America, and scores of stories and characters that are all family, as well as serving as the capital of Louisiana. Donaldsonville was the commercial hub for trade up and down the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico until Bayou Lafourche was damned in 1903. Today, Donaldsonville is on the threshold of becoming Louisiana's version of Williamsburg, Virginia.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Menasha was carved from the northeastern Wisconsin wilderness in the late 1840s. At the confluence of the Fox River and Lake Winnebago, the town's early entrepreneurs and industrialists sought the promise of waterpower to fuel their mills and kick-start the engine of commerce. Taming the Fox with dams, canals, and a lock, Menasha initially made its mark with flour mills and lumber-based industry. At one time, the city was home to the largest manufacturer of wood-turned products in the world. In the late 19th century, however, the tides of change once again washed upon the city and industrial focus shifted to the paper industry. What made Menasha great were dependable waterpower, plentiful rail connections to centers of commerce in Milwaukee and Chicago, and a prolific labor force that coincided with an influx of European immigrants.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The Natchez Trace is one of the oldest trails in North America. In 1801, President Jefferson ordered the Army to build a road along the trail to provide a route for moving troops and delivering mail. Jefferson dispatched soldiers down the road in 1803 to protect the Louisiana Purchase, and Andrew Jackson and his troops followed it to battle the British in the War of 1812. As an 1800-era link between Nashville, Tennessee, and Natchez, Mississippi, the road served as a pathway for settling much of what we now know as the South. Twentieth-century writers such as Eudora Welty later embellished its lore of heroes, bandits, and spies, inspiring Southern leaders to revive the Natchez Trace.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The name Beartooth suggests strength, rawness, and force. Indeed, the Beartooth Mountains are a power and are unsurpassed in splendor and beauty. The voluminous masses are said to compromise one of the largest contiguous areas in North America. Early natives came in search of game in both the high country and rich valleys, especially the Crows, who used the area frequently. Later, miners appeared in search of precious metals and developed gold, chrome, and platinum mines. Geographers came and scaled mountain peaks, defining, naming, and mapping. Cattle and sheepmen were also lured to the lush mountain pastures. Eventually, trails became roads, and the Beartooth Plateau was easily accessible upon the completion of the Beartooth Highway. With the creation of the US Forest Service, forestlands were surveyed and protected by wilderness status. Soon, dudes were upon the landscape, and an industry was created amongst the peaks and prairies of the Beartooths.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The first permanent settlers of Kaniksu County filtered into the Priest River and Priest Lake area of northern Idaho's panhandle in the late 1880s. Some came to build homes, farms, and businesses in an area where none had existed before. Others were more interested in trapping and prospecting; they sought to lead solitary and eccentric lives away from civilization. Most settlers learned quickly that harvesting the vast timber wealth of the heavily forested mountains was the best way to earn a livelihood. For almost 50 years, millions of logs and cedar poles were sent down the tumultuous Priest River to its confluence with the larger Pend Oreille. This was believed to be the second-to-last log drive to end in the lower 48 states. Construction of the Great Northern Railroad in 1892 spurred both industry and settlement, opening the way for sawmills downstream to service their markets until modern roads and trucking came into existence.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Jared Pratt and his wife first settled in the Prattsburgh area in 1800. In 1802, Capt. Joel Pratt, Jared Pratt's uncle, and William Root, of Albany, purchased the township from the Pulteney estate. The town was officially formed on April 12, 1813, and named after Captain Pratt. During Prattsburgh's peak, it was a thriving place, boasting such businesses as the J.H. Frost Wagon Shop, Mrs. Clark's Millinery, Crossman's Blacksmith Shop, and Clary's Cooper Shop. The number of established schoolhouses and churches in town is proof of how very important education and religion were to the early settlers. Even today, Prattsburgh's rich agricultural history is still evident. Prattsburgh's success gave rise to Wheeler, a town of industries such as Renchan's Mills, a hotel, school, and general store. The remainder of the Sir William Pulteney estate became the town of Pulteney--another thriving community in its day--home to a rickshaw factory, a rattan basket factory, and many vineyards.'Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Civil War claimed over 620,000 lives from April 1861 until the last major battle in June 1865. Neighbor fought neighbor, while families were divided over the issues of states' rights, secession, and slavery. Few people realize that Missouri was the war's third most violent state with over 1,500 battles and skirmishes. Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, southwest of Springfield, commemorates the Battle of Wilson's Creek, which was the first Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River, the second major battle of the war, and where the first Union general was killed in combat. The Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Civil War collection is an outstanding compilation of artifacts, documents, and photographs primarily related to the Trans-Mississippi theater. Items include Arkansas Confederate general Patrick Cleburne's sword belt and sash, abolitionist John Brown's telescope, a Confederate 'Cherokee Braves' flag, and an original print of General Order No. 11, which forced evacuation of several western Missouri counties in an attempt to eliminate safe havens for guerrillas. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Dating back to 1686, Rhinebeck is one of New York's earliest towns. The Beekman Arms, America's oldest inn, and a Palatine farmhouse, the oldest surviving structure of German origin in the country, are only two of Rhinebeck's many treasures. Commerce developed due to the town's ideal location along the Hudson River and the Albany Post Road. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, agriculture thrived and Rhinebeck became known as the 'violet capital of the world' as well as the home of the Ankony Angus cattle herd. The wealthy were attracted by magnificent views of the Catskills and Rhinebeck's unspoiled rural character. Grand estate owners Vincent Astor, Anna L. and Levi P. Morton, and Robert Suckley also built the Astor Home for Children, the Morton Memorial Library, and the Church of the Messiah. These landmarks stand today as a tribute to their generosity and as evidence for residents and visitors of their keen interest in local affairs. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Established in 1883, Floral City is one of the oldest communities in Citrus County. Today, it is the only surviving town in the county's southeastern quadrant and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its appearance today is deceiving, however, because this tiny, quiet, laid-back village was once a sprawling, dynamic town. Floral City grew as the main commercial center of Citrus County during the Florida hard-rock phosphate boom of the early 20th century and was known for its beautiful homes, commerce, and state-of-the-art technology, including electricity and telephone service. With a population of nearly 10,000 people in 1914, it was one of the largest towns in Florida until the phosphate industry collapsed as World War I disrupted exports to Europe. Floral City never recovered economically and reverted to its original small-town ambience. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Southport is a small seaside village whose rich history began as early as 1754, when Fort Johnston was built. In 1792, it was incorporated as the town of Smithville, but in 1887, with their busy fishing village growing, the citizens decided to rename it Southport in hopes it would bring a port to their town. Much to their disappointment, however, the port was located in Wilmington. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall, and the storm surge delivered to Southport was the greatest in North Carolina's recorded history. Like most seaside villages, Southport recovered and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places today. Observing Independence Day since 1795, Southport annually hosts the official North Carolina Fourth of July celebration. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Organized baseball in Orange County began in the late 1880s when community teams began forming among oil well workers. Around 1900, a farm boy from Kansas named Walter Johnson arrived with his family. Soon, the flame-throwing future hall-of-fame pitcher would be dominating games throughout the county as a star for Fullerton Union High School. As the popularity of baseball grew, more teams and leagues formed in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and other cities. Connie Mack brought the Philadelphia Athletics to spring train in Orange County in the 1940s. Joe DiMaggio played for his Santa Ana Air Base team after joining the Army. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and many other legends visited Orange County over the years. Dozens of well-known players grew up here, and many are laid to rest here. In 1966, the California Angels played their first game in Orange County, where they remain today as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The baseball history in Orange County is rich--and surprising. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Sevierville, the first city many people see when they arrive in the Smoky Mountains, is located in a picturesque valley at the foot of the Smokies. Founded in 1795 and incorporated in 1901, it is the oldest city in Sevier County and the eighth-oldest town in Tennessee. More than just a beautiful place to vacation, Sevierville has a rich heritage and history. Two centuries ago, Sevierville was a small, rural community with one church, two mills, one tavern, one trading post, two lawyers, and a stable for a courthouse. As the county seat, the town became an important commercial center. One of Sevierville's most breathtaking sights and enduring symbols is the classic clock tower on the historic courthouse, with majestic Mount LeConte as a backdrop. Just minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville combines a relaxed, small-town atmosphere with ready access to hundreds of vacation attractions, shopping, and recreational opportunities. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Located in northeast Ohio, Willoughby began as a community of mills and cabins clustered along the banks of the Chagrin River. The first settlers arrived before 1800 and were hardy New Englanders who brought their religious beliefs, their love of country, their respect for education, and their architecture to the wilderness. By 1853, when the village was incorporated, they had established churches, homes, businesses, and schools, including a medical college. Before the century was over, the arrival of two rail lines and an electric streetcar company transformed the quiet little town into a bustling center of commerce and enterprise. Since then, Willoughby, known as the 'Courtesy City,' has continued to grow and prosper while retaining the look and feel of an earlier era. Historic homes still line its residential streets, while several blocks of the commercial district are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the mid-1700s, the French explored the area that is now Iberia Parish. By 1765, many Acadians arrived, and the Spanish settled along the Bayou Teche in 1779. They named the area Nueva Iberia after the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. Sugarcane plantations along Bayou Teche attracted Anglo-Americans and their slaves. In the mid-19th century, with the second Francophile migrations, French became the dominant language. By the end of Reconstruction, distinctions between Acadians and neighboring groups blurred, giving rise to a new people--the Cajuns. Today, Iberians stay true to their agrarian roots, as evidenced in farming, ranching, fishing, and hunting. Religion remains strong, and the arts are encouraged. Iberia Parish is known as the hottest (Tabasco), sweetest (sugarcane), oiliest (oil drilling), and saltiest (salt mines) place on earth. 130 pp. Englisch.
