Paperback. Condition: Good. Every life has its share of difficulties, but some of us have faced extraordinary challenges. Depending on our responses, these trials can either derail or fortify us. This book examines the courage, tenacity, and self-awareness of women who overcame unimaginable hardships. While each story is unique, the experiences are relatable, and the common thread of resilience makes the collection inspirational. The details of abuse, divorce, betrayal, and disease-unexpected twists and turns-present an honest look at lives behind the shiny facade of pretense and perfectionism. Their stories reveal that sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction, but also how truth can-and must-set you free. Once victims, now victors, these women shine a light on systemic, cultural, oppressive issues and demonstrate how facing them can be a springboard for growth and self-actualization. This book provides a road map for anyone navigating a difficult situation. There is always a way through, a way out. The power to overcome and conquer adversity is within all of us.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Life on the Other Side by Barrye Price is excellent on many different levels. It tells a great love story (really two great love stories). It tells of the tragedy, victory, relapse, small triumphs, and finally final heartbreak of cancer. It tells of the inner circle around one who suffers; the close circle of close friends, colleagues, and church leaders; and the outer circle of supportive but confused friends, troops, and church congregants. It is an importantly simple spiritual story of how, although tragic circumstances teach us about faith, all of us have so much more to learn. It is written extremely well in an engaging, sometimes appropriately humorous style, and then later a gripping style (that even makes an old Army guy tear up ). Finally, the lessons at the end are great. They are derived from the story, but would have been distracting if they were included in the text. When I finished the book, I was ready to get the lessons at the end. I am sure that there will be some people, especially those who have lost a spouse or are helping those who lost a spouse, who will turn first to the lessons. That is okay, too, because those readers can later read the story that the lessons are based upon. Life on the Other Side is a great read for everyone and a must read for those who are helping those suffering from the tragedy of cancer. Michael J. Meese, PhD (BG, U.S. Army, Retired) Chief Operating Officer, American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association (AFMA).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In this powerful and moving book, Maram al- Masri, the award-winning Syrian poet who has lived much of her life in Paris, presents us with a chronicle of the lives of others - women and some of their children - who exist unseen and unheard in contemporary France. Many of the characters whose real or imagined lives she discloses are isolated as individuals; they endure their lives in quiet desperation, prisoners in one way or another of a great silence. Writing in Arabic and French, Maram al-Masri has donated her voice to breaking that silence with clarity, brevity and compassion, a voice which now resonates throughout the English-speaking world in this fine translation by the Irish poet, Theo Dorgan.…
