La bibbia latina a due volumi, acquistata dal reverendo Chrapicki, vescovo di Chelmno (1496-1508), fu offerta ai frati francescani dell'Ordine Lubawa (Polonia). Immediatamente prima della Seconda guerra mondiale, la Bibbia Pelplin correva il rischio di perdersi per sempre ma fu salvata dal reverendo Liedtke, che riuscì a proteggerla in una valigia di cuoio e poi a nasconderla a Parigi, insieme ad altri tesori appartenenti alla diocesi. Poco prima che le truppe tedesche invadessero la capitale francese, il tesoro polacco fu portato a Londra e, successivamente, in Canada. Alla fine, dopo 20 anni, i tesori della diocesi di Pelplin furono finalmente restituiti al loro proprietario originale. It measures 44,2 x 59,6 cm, and the number of folios, 241 in the first tome and 311 in the second, makes it particularly weighty, even hard to move, adapted more to a permanent display lectern than for daily perusal. Furthermore the thirty-five large miniatures decorating the beginning of each book appear more like paintings framed in a precious vellum passepartout than miniatures, "miniature" usually suggesting something extremely small, often only explored successfully with the help of a magnifying glass. This is not the case with the Urbino Bible, in which every detail is pleasingly arranged on a page four times larger than a standard modern sheet with some of the miniatures 15 centimetres high and 26 centimetres wide. More than a book this Bible serves as a monumental tribute to Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, who created one of the most vital centres of renaissance culture in Urbino. The Bible, one of the finest codices in Federico's library, was written by Ugo Comminelli of M??s and decorated in Florence in the space of two years (1477-1478) by Francesco di Antonio del Chierico, a miniaturist then at the height of his fame. Other celebrated artists of the day, Attavante, Francesco Rosselli and probably Davide Ghirlandaio, brother of the better known Domenico, worked with Francesco to illustrate the Bible -Description of the work: o Complete reproduction of the Codex Urb. One of the most precious late classical illuminated manuscripts is a herbal produced in Constantinople during the 6th century, which, after its current place of conservation, is called the "Vienna Dioscorides". This codex describes numerous officinal herbs, most of which are illustrated in full-page miniatures covering a whole page. Like the fascinating images of human beings and animals contained in the book, they bear testimony to the great art of book painting at the time of the Byzantine Empire. In the line of text tradition - the herbal of the Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides (1st century) including insertions from writings of other authors and a number of significant appendices - the Vienna Dioscorides has provided a virtually inexhaustible source for the history of classical sciences and early Byzantine culture. The codex had an enormous influence for several centuries and became the ancestor of numerous herbals and officinal herb manuals of the Middle Ages, down to the beginning of the modern age. It bears the traces of continuous use by Greek, Latin, Turkish, Oriental and Jewish physicians, thus proving an ongoing esteem for classical pharmacology. With the increasing interest for the effects of medicinal herbs in modern times, the Vienna Dioscorides is gaining ever-wider recognition, and was awarded the status of a world's cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1998. Testimony to Byzantine book painting The dedication picture introducing the manuscript allows it to be dated to around 512 and located in a workshop in Constantinople. It shows the Byzantine princess Juliana Anikia, endower of a church in the quarter of Honoratae; she is being presented the precious codex as a gift from the citizens of Constantinople. Invaluable source for the sciences, book illumination, and philology The manuscript consists largely of a copy of the herbal by the physician and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides, arranged in alphabetical order. It describes 383 medicinal herbs in Greek majuscule, a script often referred to by researchers as Bible majuscule. We also find transcriptions in a later minuscule as the old majuscule script became increasingly difficult to read. In a highly sophisticated didactic approach, the descriptive text is accompanied with pictorial representations of the plants. Most of these illustrations cover a whole page and are executed in opaque colour painting. Together with 66 images of poisonous animals and 47 illustrations of birds they represent excellent copies of late Hellenistic-Roman models, and are priceless not least because the antique originals have been lost. The herbal covers the main part of the book and is followed by several appendices, among them an anonymous poem on the effects of plants dedicated to the Gods (carmen de viribus herbarum) and four paraphrases on classical scientific works. The paraphrase of Eutecnios on the "Theriaca" of Nicandros of Colophon containing illustrations of plants and wild animals (snakes, scorpions, spiders), the paraphrase of the same author on the "Alexipharmaca" of Nicandros, an anonymous paraphrase on the "Halieutica" of Oppianos and an anonymous paraphrase on the "Ornithiaca" of Dionysos of Philadelphia including numerous depiction's of birds, which have proved important in the history of zoological illustration. The book concludes with some small fragments of a Menaion, a liturgical service manuscript including the lives of saints, which goes beyond the scope of its contents. A manuscript unique in its kind The great esteem for and frequent use of the manuscript over the centuries is clearly visible from the numerous inscriptions and glosses in the margins added by later hands in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish and Arabic. This collective manuscript not only referred to the most diverse sources but also provided a résumé of all relevant findings of Greek research in the field of pharmacy and applied botany. I medaglioni, caratteristici di queste Bibbie, vengono sostituiti in questo caso da registri rettangolari più tipici della tradizione antica italiana, i quali ricordano perfino le strisce di affresco che appaiono dal 1300 sulle ampie superfici dei nuovi edifici. Questi sono alcuni riferimenti culturali dominanti che danno al manoscritto napoletano un carattere proprio. La Bibbia, scritta in francese, contiene una parte dell¿Antico Testamento (dalla Genesi fino al terzo libro dei Giudici, fogli 1-112v), accompagnata da moralizzazioni e da un ciclo del Nuovo Testamento molto sviluppato, dall¿espulsione di Gioacchino dal Tempio fino alla Pentecoste, fogli 113r-189v). Si tratta di un incarico di lusso, e ogni foglio è dipinto solo da un lato, quello della carne. L¿opera è straordinaria e l¿eccezionale qualità pittorica delle sue miniature, soprattutto delle 76 immagini a pagina intera che raccontano i momenti basilari della vita e la Passione di Cristo, è già stata resa nota dagli storici dell¿arte. Questa Bibbia presenta, in uno stesso volume, un accostamento di due formule illustrative che fanno di questa Bibbia un oggetto eccezionale. Le prime 128 miniature rientrano nel genere delle Bibbie Moralizzate. Eccetto il frontespizio a pagina intera del foglio 1, le miniature del Vecchio Testamento sono incorniciate con decorazioni di tipo vegetale e vengono divise in due registri, la parte superiore per le scene bibliche e la parte inferiore per la sua moralizzazione. I 76 dipinti a pagina intera del ciclo del Nuovo Testamento contrastano radicalmente col ciclo precedente, facendoci entrare in un ambito figurativo e spirituale ben diverso, d¿ispirazione principalmente giottesca. Ogni miniatura, dipinta su fondo in foglia d¿oro, illustra un unico argomento, per cui il canone dei personaggi è molto più grande che nella parte moralizzata. Il ciclo comincia con episodi apocrifi della Leggenda Dorata e a partire dall¿Annunciazione (f. 129), il programma iconografico è ispirato ai testi canonici. L¿insieme dell¿illustrazione è dovuto essenzialmente a due mani diverse. Come capire dunque questa frattura così forte, questo radicale cambio di direzione che osserviamo tra il programma iconografico della prima parte della Bibbia e lo spirito sensibile, completamente in sintonia con lo stile degli affreschi che fiorivano allora a Napoli, dipinto nella seconda parte? Tutto ci fa pensare che l¿esecuzione fu lenta, o forse fu perfino interrotta per qualche tempo, e quando fu ripresa, il progetto iniziale non sembrava più così pertinente. Senza dubbio era un momento in cui la grande pittura offriva nuove ed abbonanti fonti d¿ispirazione. Manca solo precisare chi fu il gran committente di questo cambio d¿orientamento, e a chi poté esserne affidata l¿esecuzione. La pittura, screpolato in alcune parti, così come l¿applicazione della foglia d¿oro in alcune parti del manoscritto, lasciano intravedere mani abituate alla tecnica dell¿affresco. Già nel 1969, Ferdinando Bologna proponeva identificare l¿artista delle migliori pagine della Bibbia.

Modena, Biblioteca Estense Universitaria. La Bibbia di Borso d'Este è uno dei più begli esempi di miniatura rinascimentale del Nord Italia. Scritto e miniato dopo la metà del XV secolo è illustrato, al suo interno, con numerose miniature, sia sul recto che sul verso, con iniziali istoriate, bordure e medaglioni. Molteplici miniature a pagina intera raffigurano il testo con brillanti colori impreziosito con l'applicazione dell'oro. Il manoscritto commissionato da Borso d'Este, tra il 1455 e il 1461, fu acquistato, nel 1923, all'asta a Parigi dal senatore Giovanni Treccani che lasciò in eredità alla biblioteca di Modena dove tutt'ora è conservato. Due tomi (37,5x26,5 cm. per un totale di 1208 pagine) con legatura in velluto rosso vivo su piatti in legno, medaglioni in argento dorato sul piatto anteriore e fermagli di chiusura in argento dorato. It could not have seen the light unless the cultural climate in Milan during the sixteenth century had been favorable. The Trattato, which was published in Milan in 1584 by Paolo Gottardo Pontio (or da Ponte), is divided into seven books. The first five books deal with the different elements of painting [?On the Natural and Artificial Proportion of Things', ?On Movement', ?On Color', ?On Light', and ?On Perspective'], while the last two books are called ?The Practice of Painting' and ?On the History of Painting'. The division of the book will serve as example for other Italian writings on art of the period, such as Armenini's De' Veri Precetti della Pittura, which was published only three years after the ?Treatise' and whose second book is mainly divided into light, shadows, foreshortenings, color, and storie. On the other hand, it differs from the traditional ?dialogue? form adopted by previous writers on art, such as Paolo Pino's Dialogo della Pittura (1548) or Dolce's Aretino (1557). The dialogue form was used by Lomazzo only for the Libro de' Sogni. The planning of the book was affected by Lomazzo's progressive eye-illness. He rearranged the chapters several times, adding new sections almost certainly with the help of different people, but, as Ackerman pointed out, he was likely unable to rewrite the older ones. There is still discussion on the issue of who helped him to structure the books (both the ?Treatise' and the Idea). Qualche modesta e poco significativa gora al margine superiore di poche carta verso la fine dell' opera, tenui tracce di sporco ad alcuni angoli, peraltro esemplare in più che buono stato di conservazione generale in affascinante e solida legatura del '500. Prestigiosa e monumentale edizione, di inestimabile valore secondo i bibliografi, dell' opera principale di Gregorio Magno impressa dal Torresani, suocero di Aldo Manuzio. Iniziata durante il soggiorno diplomatico dell' Autore a Costantinopoli alla corte di Tiberio II, fu completata dopo la sua elezione papale. E' costituita da 35 libri di commento ai 42 capitoli del Libro di Giobbe. I "Moralia" resero Gregorio Magno una delle più eminenti autorità spirituali della sua epoca, fra i teologi più arguti e raffinati. Giobbe è preso a modello di onestà suprema, l' uomo che, nonostante tutte le tentazioni ed i vizi che gli si offrono quotidianamente si mantiene puro ed onesto, rispettando in ogni modo le virtù morali che dovrebbero guidare la vita dell'uomo. L' opera di Gregorio Magno divenne rapidamente uno dei testi fondamentali per l' educazione durante tutto il Medio-Evo, ricca com' è di strane informazioni sul mondo naturale, la medicina, la natura umana e la società mescolate in modo imprevedibile con analisi sobrie di colpa e peccato. Nowhere to be found on the market and nowhere to be found at all in the visually appealing original wrappers. Ottoman Turkish translation of 37 dispatches from the Grande Armée during the first German and Austrian campaign of 1805, which ended in the battle of Austerlitz. At end is a translation of the Treaty of Pressburg. The title can be translated roughly as "This is the translation of the bulletins relating the events and battles that took place in the states of Germany between the Russians, Austrians and the French in the year 1805 of Jesus Christ or in the year 1220 from the Hijrah." Jean Daniel Kieffer (1787-1833) was one of the greatest connoisseurs of the Turkish language at the time. He gave the first complete translation of the Bible in this language, a work to which he devoted ten years of his life. The publication in Ottoman Turkish of the Bulletins of the Grande Armée, in collaboration with the orientalist Belletête, served the French propaganda in the East at the beginning of the 19th century and contributed to spreading the power of the Napoleonic army in the Levant. In addition to these 1805 bulletins, Kieffer issued an Arabic translation, in the same year, titled "Kitab medjmouy hhavadits al hharb Alvaqy bein al franseireh ou al nemsavieh. He stayed in Alexandria, Rosetta and Cairo; wrote an Arabic vocabulary for the use of the army, and translated tax books. 3 copies in the US: Princeton, Athenaeum of Philadelphia and LC. Due volumi di cm. 28, pp. (4) vi (2) 1504 complessive. Con antiporta figurata a ciascun volume, frontespizi in rosso e nero con vignetta centrale e 171 tavole fuori testo finemente incise in rame (alcune delle quali più volte ripiegate). Solida legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorsi a nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro. Sguardie e tagli marmorizzati. Pochi segni d'uso e carte con solo qualche brunitura. Splendida edizione di questa Bibbia il cui ricco apparato iconografica la rende assai ambita. Le tavole risultano di ottima qualità, assai ben impresse e raffigurano episodi e scene bibliche; tra queste sono presenti 5 carte geografiche ripiegate.

Raccolta di 16 tavole incise a bulino di scuola fiamminga (numerate da 1 a 16), legate a filza, su fogli ad ampi margini cm 44 x 32 (battuta cm 25,5 x 21,5 circa). Gora presente su tutte le tavole. Le tavole raffigurano scene bibliche sul tema della Pazienza del Re Davide e dei Profeti d'Israele accompagnate da due distici testuali che descrivono la raffigurazione e da una citazione biblica. Sono disegnate daÂMaerten de Vos (1532-1603), incise e pubblicate daÂJan I Sadeler, zio di Aegidius Sadeler. La serie non e' datata. "Dorothy Limouze considers that it was published in Munich during the early period when both Sadelers were active at the Wittelsbach court around 1588. Copies of the series were produced as early as 1597 in Frankfurt, with text by Benedictus Arias Montanus. The prints in the Patientia series each include two couplets referring to the story depicted, accompanied by Bible quotations. The series 'Patientiae Davidis Regis et prophetae' is characteristic of the Counter Reformation of the late sixteenth century fot the themes of patient suffering (patientia)" (Thea Vignau-Wilberg, "Music for a while", 1999, p. 137). Nel Catalogo della libreria antiquaria Ludwig Rosenthal (Monaco, 1871) e' citata questa raccolta di tavole, datata 1586, definita di una rarita' straordinaria: "Patientiae Davidis regis et prophetae in Israel Joa. Some marginal staining and foxing, slightly browned throughout, a good, genuine copy.First edition, dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, of this grammar of vernacular Arabic, not to be confused with an Arabic-Italian dictionary published by Dominicus three years afterwards under the similar title of Fabrica linguae Arabicae. The Arabic letters for this edition were designed and cast in the printing office of the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, established in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.?Father Germanus (1585-1670) succeeded T. Obicini in 1636 as lector of Arabic and as collaborator on the Arabic Bible project. Afterwards he stayed for a time in Persia, and ended his life as a scholar in Madrid. There he left his manuscript of an unfinished Koran translation, [?] and grammatical treatises of Persian and Turkish. Dominicus Germanus de Silesia is one of the first to have prepared a new and faithful translation with commentary of the Koran (Du Ryer's French translation, not very exact, appeared in 1647), but it is doubtful whether he could have published it: the Sacra Congregatio forbade publication of the Koran in any language. Marracci seems not to have known his translation when he published his own edition in 1698.
