Water being a prime natural resource, a basic human need and a precious national asset, planning, development and use of water resources for food production must be based on its economics. India is known as carp country. Culture of carps, fresh water prawn, brackish water fish and shrimps have received increased attention in recent years due to their high market value. Since there is significant potential for both horizontal and vertical expansion of aquculture sector, the system needs to be sustainable through improvement in human capacity, resource use and environmental management.
