Ik heb haar opgetild e…n mee naar huis genomen, waar ik haar wond uitwaste. De zeemeermin was zo blij dat ik haar leven heb gered dat ik een wens mocht doen. Ik had maar één ik vroeg haar bij mij te blijven." Keizer woont met zijn vader aan de rand van het bos, net achter de duinen. Zijn moeder heeft hij nauwelijks gekend. Maar ze leeft voort als zeemeermin in een van de vele verhalen die zijn vader vertelt. Soms, als Keizer op zijn geheime plek in de duinen uitkijkt over de zee, hoopt hij dat zijn moeder zal oprijzen uit de golven. Tegen beter weten in. Want van zijn vader weet het leven is een verhaal, maar niet altijd een sprookje.
