In the sixteenth to seventeenth century a whole galaxy of artists were working in the Duchy of Urbino creating versatile, artistically virtuoso pottery characterized by the close link between the craft and the high art of their time. Maiolica painting was significantly influenced by the great masters of the Renaissance and Mannerism, including Raphael, Michelangelo, Gulio Romano, Parmigianino and others. The painted décor of the Urbino maiolica was mostly based on engravings of these artists paintings. Istoriato maiolica artists made use of the graphic works by Marcantonio Raimondi, Giangiacomo Carallio, Marco Dente, Giulio Bonasone and Enea Vico. Masters occasionally combined elements of various engravings, often by different artists, thus creating new compositions.
