Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Colon cancer is a serious public health problem, costing lives, mounting economic losses, and agrowing financial hardship. The incidence of coloncancer is increasing while the population''s fitnessis declining. Obesity, which is prevalent amongadults and children, forecasts growing healthproblems, including colon cancer. Physical activityis beneficial to human health. It favourably impactsthe incidence of many diseases, including coloncancer. The interplay of physical activity and coloncancer takes place on multiple levels, resulting inlower cancer risk. The scientific literature hasshown a preponderance of evidence that physicalactivity is beneficial because it significantlylowers colon cancer incidence. What is not uniformlyagreed upon is how this takes place because there aremany plausible pathways of influence. The purpose ofthis study was to study the relationship betweencolon cancer and physical activity. Pertinentarchival literature has been examined with the use ofcontent analysis methodology. In addition toobtaining relational information among the searchresults, the researcher identified a commondenominator to both colon cancer and physicalactivity. Colon cancer etiologic categories wereidentified from the literature: age/genetics;diet/obesity; vitamin D; calcium;immunity/inflammation; and bioactive substancesincorporating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1),interleukins, and prostaglandins. Physical activityexerts a positive health benefit within each of thecolon cancer etiologic categories, thus lessening thecancer risk. Melatonin was identified as the commondenominator, the missing link, of colon cancer andphysical activity which has a reciprocal relationshipto each. Melatonin plays a role within each of theetiologic categories, as cancer risk factors diminishits level while physical activity enhances itspresence. Colon cancer incidence can be substantiallyreduced with physical activity. Increasing physicalactivity is a priority in colon cancer control on anindividual and a societal level. The fact thatmelatonin, an important cancer-reducing substance anda common denominator to colon cancer and physicalactivity, can be enhanced by physical activity allowsa cost-effective cancer preventive steps for anypopulation.
