Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the summer of 1944, the skies over Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia became a graveyard for Allied aircraft. Hundreds of American and Allied airmen, shot down during bombing raids on Romanian oil fields and Axis supply lines, found themselves stranded deep in enemy territory - hunted, wounded, and waiting. What followed was one of the most audacious rescue operations of the entire war.Operation Halyard was born in secrecy. A three-man OSS team - Lieutenant George Musulin, Master Sergeant Michael Rajacich, and radio specialist Arthur Jibilian - parachuted behind German lines and made contact with Serbian Chetnik forces under General Draza Mihailovic. Together, they constructed makeshift airstrips in the Serbian hills and coordinated a fleet of C-47 cargo aircraft flying out of Italy, daring to land in broad daylight beneath the watch of German patrols.Between August and December 1944, over 500 Allied airmen - among them 432 Americans - were lifted from the valleys and forests of occupied Serbia and returned to Allied bases. The Serbian villagers who sheltered these men risked everything: their homes, their families, their lives. Yet for decades, the story was deliberately buried by American, British, and Yugoslav governments, its heroes denied recognition, its architect executed by a postwar communist tribunal. 196 pp. Englisch.
