Beyond an apparent facile ease, the paintings prove to be raw and violent then. Theirs is a bitter realization: the American dream, the dream of a bucolic family happiness, is shattered.Sage Vaughn likes to cloud the issue, however, and scramble what might be seen as clear cut; he doesn t stop at this admission of failure. In the wake of Melville, whose novels the painter admires, Vaughn well knows that even during war the birds continue to sing and children to play.Texts by James Jolliff, Photos by Spike Jonze, Paperback, 21 x 27 cm / 48 pages full color.
