Hardback & Dust Jacket . ***************************** James Rosenquist was born in 1933 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He had his first contact with art during his teenage years when he took art classes at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and learned to paint with Cameron Booth from 1952 to 1954 at the University of Minnesota. In 1955 he went to New York to study art at the Art Students League with renown teachers such as German Dadaist George Grosz and Edwin Dickinson. After one year, he decided to quit and returned to painting billboards like in his early years. In the 1960s, Rosenquist began to add to his large-scale paintings images from the commercial world, advertising and pop references to draw a portrait of modern life, consumerism and sexuality. In fact, he is considered as one of the fathers of the Pop Art movement along with Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein. In the 1970s, he went from pure aesthetics to geo-political, existentialist and environmental themes. Today, Rosenquist work is represented in public and private collections worldwide, in the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Tate Modern in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art for example. The Guggenheim Museum organized in 2003 one of the most important retrospective exhibition on the artist which travelled around the world. "" ************************** ref 175.
