Chronicles the life of a slave from Africa, born a prince of Guinea, captured at age 6, who over three decades bought not only his own freedom but that of his wife and children. Venture Smith, as he was known, become the first man in history to document both his capture from Africa and his life as a American slave. Excerpts from his account appear on facing pages to the poems by Nelson. 69 pp plus a note on the art, etc. Fine in near fine dust jacket (price-clipped).
