This insightful study uncovers the unremitting struggle to define the powers of Parliament within the English Constitution from the reign of William the Conqueror through the Norman dynasty. The author's meticulous historical analysis reveals how the power of the monarchy was constrained by ancient Saxon principles, which were preserved through the concept of a constitutional monarchy and the common law. This book takes an in-depth look into how the powers of Parliament crystallized from an assembly of the king's advisors to a body that could challenge the monarch. It traces the development of Parliament as a complex institution representing diverse interests and the ongoing tension between royal authority and representative government. Rich in detail and erudition, this book provides invaluable insights into the historical evolution of Parliament and its enduring role in shaping the British Constitution.
