The author believes that the true difference between plants and animals is that animals have a consciousness of an outer world, while plants do not. The author examines the organs of that consciousness, that is, the psychical organs of animals. These psychical organs are of three kinds: Receptive organs, organs that receive impressions from the outer world; reflective organs, that is, organs that combine the impressions received by the receptive organs; and reactive organs, that is, organs that react upon the outer world; they are the servants of the central nervous system, which go from within outward, while the receptive organs go from without inward. The more the organs for sympathetic motions are developed the more extensive the outer world of which the animal is conscious, and the larger is its psychical horizon.
